Well Done

I wouldn't call the Big Ten 'really bad'. It's not as good as the Big 12 but will be a balanced conference and will be a serious grind for Iowa.
When you have some of your upper level teams losing at home to the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Incarnate Word......that's really bad.

Classy post by Jon here. I respect anyone that can come and say that without making excuses. Nice job from him.

Also, we're not nearly as good as we're going to be. Let the nation take notice. There's a storm brewing in Ames, and it's strong enough to take down anybody out there.

Good, thoughtful comments by Jon. I don't think ISU shoots like that every night, but i do think they have Final Four potential. Iowa, the jury is still out with me. I know they don't have the best shooters, but I was surprised at all of the open 3s that were passed up, and by several different players. Shoot those and make 35% and It might be a different game.

When Iowa st. Is hitting outside shots we are a legit top 10 team IMO and that's without McKay. With McKay it will be interesting to see if this team can overcome a poor shooting night with an inside game of McKay, Naing, and hogue working the paint. That's why I'm excited about this team, last year a bad shooting night always spelled doom(which was far and few between), however this year we just might have a very good inside, front court team to win games. We shall see. McKay will be rusty for first few games no doubt.

LOL at the "play Jok more" post.

Fran may not know much but if "play Jok more" happens, he knows they'd be lucky to win 15 games.

Thanks for the post Jon. It's obvious the it hurts the team to be missing a player like Marble. Teams need a player or two that you can always count on to step up in a drought. Iowa appears to be missing that.

I respect Jon for at least coming on here and admitting what we all witnessed last night... ISU dominating Iowa.

With that being said... maybe Jon shouldn't run his mouth so much bashing ISU and pumping up Iowa? I can see pumping up Iowa, that's kinda his job, but maybe he should zip it when bashing ISU. He bashed our football team, and we went into Kinnick and beat them. He thought Iowa would win last night, and it wasn't even a game. You would think he'd know when to stop making himself look so bad, wouldn't you?

As for Iowa, I think that UNC win gave their team and their fans a little false confidence. I watched that entire game, and after it was over I remember saying to myself.... "if Iowa plays like that against us, we'll blow them out of the gym."

Yeah, they beat UNC at Chapel Hill, great win, but if you watched that game.... it was about as painful as you can get. Both teams looked and played absolutely horrible basketball, but Iowa just played a tiny bit less bad basketball than UNC did.

I've been saying all year that Iowa is nearly the exact same team as last year minus Marble, Basabe, and McCabe. That is not a good thing. I guess adding Jok is a bit of a plus, but it doesn't account for all their losses... not even close. So last year Iowa was a "play in" team, and this team is worse. Make your own judgement on how far you think they will go this year.

I think one of the problems is Gabe is their second best player and for some inexplicable reason Fran doesn't start him.

Yeah, not sure I understand that myself. Fran just loves Woodhead for some reason. He always talks glowingly about him.

You know darn well if that would have been Woodhead instead of Gabe, Nader would have posterized him. I give Gabe a lot of credit for taking Nader on. It was a great block on the ball, even though he did foul him hard with the body. But we all saw the momentum Iowa got from that play when Ginger White went down on the other end and hit a 3 and made Fred call a timeout. I actually heard some noise in Carver after that series.

Of course, cool hand Monte quickly took over and quieted the crowd right back down again after the timeout though, and Carver was a morgue the rest of the night.

I do question Fran's coaching ability though. Gabe should be playing a LOT more, and Woodhead should be sitting a lot more IMO. I think Jok should probably play more since he's the only one they have that can actually knock down a shot. And if I were Fran, I'd post Uthoff up more. The kid is 6'10" and can play the 3 for crying out loud.

If Uthoff and Ginger White could develop a post up game, that would help. White is just SO limited. He can dunk on fast breaks and putbacks, but that's about it. Can't shoot, can't dribble, no post moves. Had zero FG's against UNC. His half court offense consists of standing out behind the arc, then attempting to drive, flail his arms all over the place, and get the foul. That's it. He would get eaten alive in the NBA, but he'll never make it there.

While i don't think he's amazing, he's one of the few guys on their team that acts like he wants to take shots. He gave them some energy last night. He isn't a complete player but his strength is scoring, thats exactly what Iowa is missing most. Besides, look who's playing ahead of him.

Uthoff can play the three against Arkansas Baltimore County, big-boy high D-1, child please.

Jon, first time caller, long time listener. Why is HN such a cesspool? Not Hawk fans in general, because I know many good Hawk fans, but HN is just the worst of the worst. By design or by chance?

I was preparing myself for Monday conversations with various work Hawk fans and looking at their conference schedule. Looks pretty rough for them. If they lose to UNI and the wheels come off a bit I could see them easily ending at 16-17 wins. Would that even put them in the NIT? Being a Cyclone fan I have no clue what the qualifications for the NIT are.

Uthoff could play some three for Fred and overall would be a lot better. Same with just about any of their players.

After listening to Fred talk about White the past 4 years, I bet Fred would get White drafted. The kid that fouled Nader would be a difference maker here when we matchup with the KUs.

I think that's probably true. Iowa has better talent than we give them credit for. The problem is that Fran clearly isn't able to develop that talent. Fred would probably have turned White and Uthoff into serious ballers.

They need playmakers, plain and simple. What you saw last night was a team that at any one time have 3 or 4 on the court against a team that had none. They just do not have anyone who can break the defense down and stop the momentum of the other team. That was Marble. He may not have been clutch, and at time a bit selfish, but the guy could get to the basket, draw a foul, stop the clock and get to the line. That right there may have at the very least slowed down the onslaught and given the Hawks a chance.

So many fans felt like we wouldn't really miss Marble this year, and I never understood that. He's the best player we've had in almost 10 years (at a minimum) and the only one last year who could consistently create his own shot. Some thought he was selfish, and at times he probably was, and they thought that might have led to guys just standing around watching and waiting for Marble to take care of things. But he's gone now, and the offense still grinds to a standstill pretty consistently in the half court. I was screaming and throwing **** all over the place, just begging players to start moving without the ball.

Tonight just proved the talent gap Hoiberg has gained in Ames.
I believe every position for ISU is more talented than Iowa. And that includes Edozie > Woodbury.

Fred has built this program into a talented, reload not rebuild program.

Honestly, looking at benches and recruits, ISU has the advantage for the foreseeable future.

I don't think that Edozie is better than Woodbury, but it is way closer than it should be, since Woodbury was suppose to be a big time stud, jewel of the Iowa recruiting class. Woodbury is pretty good if you can keep him in the post on defense. Him going out and trying to cover GN was laughable at best. They did call him for grabbing GN once, but if they did it every time Woodbury would have fouled out early on. Just a complete miss match, and really makes me wonder what Mad Fran is thinking sometimes.
