So... the Cubs are willing to offer up one of the top 10 prospects in all of baseball last year for a guy who will be a free agent in 12 months? Tells me what I need to know about how much the Cubs brass truly values Baez.

well the Cubs got a top 5 overall prospect for Samardja but he had 1.5 years left at the time so I suppose that's the going rate.

Not that you'll care anyway, your entire purpose in this thread is to troll Cubs fans

Anyone know when Addison Russell will start playing for us?

I figure he'll be up by August 1st, but if we're going to be competing, surely they'll want him up earlier to be with the team, right?

Which is why we need to either trade Castro or Baez or let the fan base know one of them is finding a new position.

I thought I read Russell might be a whole year away, unless they are more aggressive in their timeline.

Dang. Makes sense I guess from a financial standpoint. But MLB had an article on him when he was with the A's saying he could potentially start opening day 2014 in the MLB with that organization

And Cubs brass loves him so much they were willing to trade him for 1 year of Zimmerman.

Wow... 3 HRs at Coors? Almost makes you overlook the 300 strikeout pace... almost.

3 All Star Middle Infielders? I only remember seeing 1.

Just goes to show how little you know of Baez timeline of development. Just stop posting in here.

You seriously don't find it a little odd that the Cubs have now been linked to potential trades of Starlin Castro (the only Cubs Middle infield All Star by the way...) and Javier Baez?

Trying to trade Castro would serve to make room for Russell and Baez, so that's not odd at all. Baez still has huge potential, and he's been a horrendously slow starter every time he's been promoted in the system before going on to rake. I think it says the Cubs are pretty happy with having any two of Castro, Russell and Baez, and if they can trade the third to land a guy like Zimmerman, then it might be worth it. Otherwise, hold on to all three.

Cubs have been linked to this, but so have just about half of the teams in the NL:

Sources saying Jeremy Hellickson is likely to be traded this week by the Rays. It will be interesting to see what he goes for. Great pitcher with a high upside, BUT will his recent injury hurt his price?

Not sure if the Rays are interested in trading with the Cubs now or not.

I think it would be the Cubs who would back away from that first, unless Theo has gone nuts and become a huge believer in ERA. Hellickson's a fly ball pitcher that doesn't really fit well in Wrigley in my opinion.

It would be pretty neat to have a guy who went to my high school (DSM Hoover) starting for the Cubbies. Probably wont happen though.

What does this mean (and is it more meaningful than the players actually involved in the trade)?

"The Cubs will also receive Atlanta's international signing bonus slot No. 4"
There's a limit on how much you can spend on international prospects without going into a luxury tax I believe. Each slot is worth a different amount for each team based on how good they are. I think.

Atlanta just gave the Cardinals Jason Heyward for free pretty much.

Russell Martin is a Blue Jay.

Bad start to the offseason for the Cubs.
