I liked watching his talents, and I was a fan of Shabazz. But really???? "there were some nights he goes to bed starving"
You mean the meal plan that was paid for with your scholarship was too expensive for you?
SMH. Unions will ruin college sports.

Discuss.

Just to clarify, I'm not defending the NCAA because they are making a killing off of these "student" athletes, but that statement is just stupid when your meals are provided.

It was pretty apparent that Shabaz did not take an English or public speaking course while "attending" UCONN. His interviews were some of the worst I have ever seen.

When living off campus scholarship athletes can get a stipend for rent and food. Of course that money doesn't all go toward food, some of it goes to travel expenses, some goes to entertainment, some goes to new things. The student is expected to be responsible with the money they receive. Not every student is responsible and that is how student athletes end up going to bed hungry.

TL;DR: some athletes have a stipend instead of meal plan and don't spend stipend on food.

There was one point in college where I literally went two months where the only thing I ate was ramen, canned corn or corn flakes. Where's my pity party?

Did you make tens of millions of dollars for your university?

Did you get a full ride scholarship, get access to tens of millions dollars worth of state of the art athletic facilities and get free travel to 10-15 games a year while gaining national exposure and likely get paid under the table anyway?

The money that is made on these players is also spent on them. If you want to pay Shabazz, prepare to pay some unknown water polo player the same amount.

This is the most worn out argument there is. College players know exactly what they're getting into. I played baseball for free in college. I woke up every day knowing I was blessed to be getting higher education at no cost when I knew some of my friends were struggling to pay their bills.

I suppose we should pay kids that sing in the choir in college too, right? I mean they make the university money off of ticket sales.

I'd vote for that!

(PS: three guesses what I did in college...)

I wrote for the Daily, which would generate online views, which creates advertising, which the paper got, which is part of the school, so, while it wasn't millions, in a way, yes, I did make the university money. And I did that while paying my own way to school without a full ride scholarship and stipends.

I'd appreciate it if you could make this happen! I'm sending a daughter off this fall (final destination not yet determined) and everybody wants her for their choir(s), but nobody is offering up the big bucks! I like the way you think...

Actually if we want to be "fair" and "equitable" to everyone the water polo player should get less than a full scholly since his sport is probably losing money.

Maybe he should have to take Sabazzz through the Taco Bell late nite drive thru 3 nights per week. Yes, that sounds fair.

The good news for Shabazz is that UCONN was a free tattoos school otherwise those cost even more than food.

Seriously, this ******** should go volunteer at a homeless charity feeding some actual hungry folks.

NBA and NFL need to stop their agreement with the NCAA. If kids have no interest in school they aren't student athletes, they're just athletes. Let them go pro or D league and NFL needs to make a Minor league. Just like the MLB. This ends the argument and kids that do go to college are the ones that care more about education, exposure, experience, etc. also don't have to worry about paying women's cross country in this scenario.

Should have went to KU, didn't they just build a luxury hotel just for the basketball players?

I'm normally on the "NCAA exploits student athletes" side of the argument but this is just stupid. While the NCAA may not be fairly compensating student athletes in comparison to the money the university and the NCAA are making, they certainly provide you with enough money to eat. Also, he could have bought alot of food with the thousands of dollars worth of tattoos covering his body.

Im sure too he will devote a high percentage of the millions he makes to stop the oppressing hunger he had to deal with...
