I hope my concert tickets get refunded. It will suck to lose $30 on top of no VEISHEA, because of 300 idiots.

What exactly did he cancel that would prevent these things from happening? All he did was take away options for other things to do. Instead of controlling the fire he's trying to put it out with gasoline.

A ton of kids gather together for the concerts, that's one thing. Kids get together to drink/work on the floats at night after class, there's another. It stops some of the out-of-towners from visiting and throwing gas on the flames.

Again - whether or not it's the right answer, they had to do something to remove ISU's culpability.

But, whether it's the right or wrong answer, it at least washes the university's hands of responsibility. People dying/almost dying at a school-sanctioned week-long party makes Iowa State look bad. We were the number two most active police scanner feed last night, only behind Chicago. It makes us look like we don't know what we're doing, and maybe they don't - so they're saying, "Well, then we just won't do anything."

So it doesnt matter if its the right decision, just the one for easiest PR? Well this certainly starts to sound like a trend with Leath..

The issue here isn't whether we broke a few rules or took a few liberties with our female party guests - we did.

But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals

Or, you could also say that making decisions that make the university unimpeachable and removing all culpability is a trend. The university sponsors VEISHEA, so it sets the ball in motion. They're trying to, at the very least, make it clear that they're trying to stop/slow that motion.

Damage control is largely a function of perception versus actual accomplishment.

In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.

People need to remember that Leath didn't cancel VEISHEA... the students that decided rioting, putting their fellow students and the public at risk, and destroying public property was what needed to happen last night to have a good time are the ones that decided to cancel VEISHEA.

If we are going to start passing around the blame let's make sure that it is directed at the people that are really responsible for all of the events being cancelled.

Are you accusing Leath of making the decision to cancel VIESHEA simply because it was the easiest PR move?

How is it not anything more than the PR decision? It does exactly nothing to prevent further issues, and just harms those who did nothing wrong. The ONLY positive is that creates the appearance of the university doing anything, iow its just a PR decision.

As pops always said, "if you mess with the bull you get the horns."

And as old football coach always said, "your *** is grass and I'm the lawn mower."

It's also important, IMO, to remember that this is probably only the first step. I doubt they're just going to stop at canceling concerts, etc. There will likely be an increased police presence for the rest of the week, and who knows what else they'll decide for future VEISHEA's.

So do that and make it very visible youre doing that, focus on the actual effective things you are doing instead of making the knee jerk decision to cancel.

That's your opinion, nothing more. Many others have a different opinion.

Shocker, this is a message board, i have an opinion.

Also not a shocker that the knee jerk types that would kick players off the team every time they get an MIP or Public intox are all about the knee jerk decision to cancel.

If I was planning on having my bday party this weekend at my apartment in West Ames, should I keep it planned, or just forget about it?

Most of the people that I know are coming are always responsible and cause no problems.

Why is it "knee jerk"? Because you don't like it?

It's probably the furthest thing from "knee jerk" given the office of President at Iowa State has had to deal with such issues about 5-6 times over the past 25 years.

For crying out loud - there's actually PRECEDENT and evolution in this decision
