New Buildings...

Louden 2003-2004 here. Is that mural still up by the lounge? There were 5 or 6 of us involved in putting that thing up after it was designed. We were annoyed that the external sign for the house was on the back of the building.

I'm assuming the mural next to the door to Elwood with guy DJ-ing if I'm remembering correctly. In '06-'07 it was still there but when I came back for my sophomore year in '07-'08 they had painted over it. That same time they painted over the Charlie Brown hallway in Brown as well. I think at that point they had decided that they were going keep Helser instead of demolishing it. Had heard from many people that it was the cheapest dorm to keep running. After living there for two years I can definitely see why.

Please help me fill in the blanks..

I lived in Willow. 2 students in a 15x20 room...300 square feet.
150 square feet per student
150 square feet x 700 students
105,000 square feet needed for the students.

Now a House cost about $100 per square foot.....Again...not a clue about larger construction...but
$100 x105,000sq ft = $10.5 Mill

Why is this going to cost 50Mill. Maybe construction of a major project cost a ton more, like 5 times more....

and No.....the univeristy putting up 270 houses is not realistic...never intended it to be.
Just trying to compare apples to oranges...sorta.

Renovating the top two floors of Lagomarcino right now. It's actually really annoying because we still have classes on the basement floor so we get to listen to construction all day. Today they were cutting into the concrete.

Awww that makes me sad... but actually the Charlie Brown hallway is more depressing... pretty sure that had been there for a long while. Louden mural was early 2004 but still it seems weird that something that played off the name and was supplied by the university would be discarded (probably considered graffiti)

You need to understand what people are demanding. There aren't enough suite style dorms. People who want them are not able to get them. You want to know where they go? Traditional style dorms.

More students are not wanting to see a drop in quality of life. That means having their own bathroom and maybe somewhere to cook something.

Also people talking about making friends even in traditional style it doesn't happen as much. Most doors are closed and even when they are open there isn't necessarily a ton of interaction.

Just build more Towers. Worked fine for me, shouldnt cost around more than a few hundred thousand for each building. Best years of my life.

I suppose they could do it that cheap if they want exterior concrete to crack and fall off again

He was so jacked to be living in Helser (sounds weird I know) because he saw all the people I met, but was sorely disappointed after his year living on the Elwood floor. He said he always had to go to Louden or some other dorm to find people to interact with.

While what you proposed may have been your case I dont think it's indicative of the whole campus. So many different pockets of life out there.

Also back on topic. Can Town Engineering ever get any love? That building blows so hard. The only good thing about it is the new senior design computer lab. My freshman year we did a project on how we would add on a supposed addition to the front of the building that was actually in the works. Never came to fruition.

Our CA says our floor is fairly active. I mean I have made friends and all but it is no where near as active as what you talk about.

My son lived in Helser two years and loved it. Now in Freddy after two years when he got tired of so many freshman, but in the same building at Freddy as a bunch of his Helser friends. Something about the dive nature of the place really bonds those guys. It looks much like it did when my brother lived there in the seventies. My son misses the always open doors of Helser and of course the convenience for an engineering student; he also found some great stuff in the "secret" cubby hole. That building didn't even budge when the wrecking ball first hit the part they took down, much more solid construction than the suite dorms they put up.
