Double dual vs. Drexel & Grand View

Tomorrow night the season is officially underway! Below are a few tidbits and rankings for all three teams...

The Cyclones-Iowa State is ranked #9 per Intermat boasting four ranked wrestlers, returning five NCAA qualifiers and two All-Americans. Junior Michael Moreno is ranked #4 at 165 lbs and placed 6th at the NCAA's last year. Moreno was also voted the 2013 AWN Most Improved College Wrestler. Sophomore Tanner Weatherman is ranked #9 at 174 lbs. Weatherman is the 2013 Big 12 runner-up at 174 lbs and a NCAA qualifier last season. Senior Boaz Beard is ranked #7 at 184 lbs. Beard is the 2013 Big 12 runner-up at 184 lbs and a NCAA qualifier. Junior Kyven Gadson is ranked #3 at 197 lbs and placed 6th at last year's NCAA's. Gadson is the returning Big 12 Champ at 197 lbs and was honored by AWN as the recipient of the Courage Award and as the Comeback Wrestler of the Year. Junior Luke Goettl is a returning NCAA qualifier and Big 12 runner-up at 141 lbs. Goettl will be wrestling up a class at 149 lbs this year. On paper the heavier weights are the strength of our team, but there are several lighter-weight wrestlers on the roster to be excited about. There should be improvement across the board for the Cyclones this season.

Scouting Drexel-The Dragons are ranked #47 (Tied with Bucknell). Senior 197 pounder Brandon Palik is the team's only ranked wrestler (#12). Cyclone Kyven Gadson is ranked #3 and Palik should be a good test for him early in the season.

Scouting Grand View-Though the Vikings are a NAIA school, they are ranked #1 per Intermat. Grand View boasts ten ranked wrestlers..Junior Gustavo Martinez is ranked #1 at 141 lbs. Junior Brandon Wright is also in the 141 lb. class and is ranked #5. Senior Isaiah Tatum is ranked #1 at 149 lbs. Senior Quinten Haynes is ranked #2 at 157 lbs. Sophomore Dallas Houchins is ranked at 157 also at #6. Senior Chad Lowman is ranked #3 at 165 lbs. Junior Jimmie Schuessler is ranked #3 at 174 lbs. Also ranked in the 174 lb. class is #10 Junior Cody Swim. Junior Christian Mays is #8 at 184 lbs. Lastly, Senior Heavyweight Eric Thompson (A former Cyclone) is ranked #1..Again, these are ranked wrestlers in NAIA so take the rankings for what they're worth.

Drexel does not appear on paper to be a real big threat to beat us. What are anyones predictions on Grand View? I know they are NAIA, but they are obviously talented.

The obvious unknowns are going to be 125, 133, 141, and HWT. Thompson is very good, would be highly ranked in D1.

I think we win both duals. I think we could Goose egg Drexel but I see Grandview winning 2-3 matches.

NIAA sometimes has some really good guys highly ranked guys couldn't cut it academically in D1, but the dropoff is much more severe. The #1 ranked NIAA guy generally would be pretty highly ranked in D1, and sometimes the 2-5 guys are pretty good as well. But by the time you are getting to the 6-10th ranked wrestlers you generally are running into guys who wouldn't make a D1 lineup.

No idea, in big part because I don't know who we are going to throw out there at half the weights. I predict a solid dual win but they'll win a few matches.

With Boaz out and if Ryak wrestles 125 for them, we need to be ready. They will be favored at Hwt and tough at 141 and 149.

I wouldn't be totally surprised if they made it closer than I'd like, they are the class of the NIAA. Two years ago they would have whooped us. But I don't see it happening this season unless something freaky happens.
