ISU/Fred: win first game in tourney, lose second game = loved by ISU fan base.
Minny/Tubby: win first game in tourney, lose second game = fired.

Um, sure, Fred'll definitely be going there.

Maybe when they don't get Fred they can go after Gary Thompson. His ties to ISU are similar to Fred's.

If you are comparing Fred Hoiberg to Cael Sanderson you need to go to the bathroom, look in the mirror, and say "FOOL!" to the person looking back at you.

Besides that, like all good Utes, Cael wanted to move closer to home

Unfornately, PSU was a step-up in terms of wrestling (money, boosters, recruits, etc...).

Minny is not a step-up in terms of basketball.
Not really, it was a step up in potential or ceiling for wrestling as has been demonstrated.

Honestly, as someone who kind-of-sort-of follows Minnesota on the side, I'm a little worried about who they'll actually be able to pull in. I'm sure if Shaka was tight with Teague he'll at least entertain an interview, but geeze, if he didn't seem interested in Illinois last year is he really going to like the prospects at Minnesota? And although I think he's probably a better coach, doesn't Greg Marshall have some McDermott-at-ISU potential? Flip I always thought was a good NBA coach, but his interest in the job reeks of "I'll buddy up to the hot in-state prospects, coach at Minny for a year or two, get my name back out there and disassociated from the Wizards mess, jump at the first open NBA job". Definitely not a long-term solution and I question his drive to do any real recruiting in the short-term.

T wolves or bust... That being said, I think Fred is heavily invested in ISU. It might not last forever, but I feel like he wants to get us further than this. Minn is floundering in major men's programs, and has been for quite some time. Wayne Morgan got a tourney victory over MN, no?

I don't see it, thought I'm sure they want him.

I cannot for the life of me understand why Fred is a hot name for coaching vacancies!!!

1.) His players jack 3s all game every game. He doesnt coach, his offense is based on "chucking."
2.) He doesn't do it the "right way". He can't/ doesn't recruit HSers just gets all these poor character, poor academic, misfit convicts from Big Ten schools.
3.) He's a terrible late game coach - gets out-coached by everyone. He's especially terrible at fouling when up 3 when the opponent has the ball. Three year olds know this stuff.

:jimlad:

You forgot "doesn't know how to use timeouts" and "never screams at the officials or gets a technical foul."

KFAN in the cities writes this about Hoiberg as a possibility (or not a possibility) of becoming UM head coach...

The search is underway: Get to know some of the potential candidates for the Gophers job. | Gopher Blog - KFAN Sports Radio FM 100.3 - The Fan

Fred Hoiberg (Current Head Coach at Iowa State) - .01% chance:

As one of the more favorable names on the "short-list", the odds that the University lands Hoiberg to coach the Gophers are slim to none. Hoiberg is rightfully included as one of the fastest rising coaches in college basketball, but as far as he may be concerned, he's already landed his dream job. Named "Mr. Basketball" in the state of Iowa, Hoiberg went on to star for the Iowa State Cyclones in college earning him the nickname of "The Mayor" around Ames and most of the state of Iowa. Hoiberg went on to play in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves and briefly held and executive job with the same team before "returning to office" and taking the job as the Iowa State head coach in 2010. Hoiberg is more than a local celebrity in Ames and has already succeeded in making the Cyclones relevant again. Honestly, the state of the Iowa State basketball team is in better shape than The University of Minnesota at the present moment. Unless the President of the United States comes knocking at Hoiberg's door, it's unlikely that he ever leaves Ames and the Iowa State job.

Nothing most of us didn't already know as well as most sports pundits.

Other names being thrown around are Phil Jackson, John Calipari and the Ghost of John Wooden.

I caught some local news from the twin cities last night. The big item on the Tubby Smith was how much that was going to cost "The U."

they might not have the bucks to get a premier name?

I love when they refer to themselves as "The U". There is only one "The U" and it sure as hell isn't in Minnesota.

My gut tells me that it would just be a temporary stopover for him, so I wonder if Saunders would give the ol' alma mater a discount if they went that direction. Meanwhile the AD can quietly look for a more permanent solution while waiting for the budget to clear up a little.

I enjoyed this quote on gopherhole.

2. Once again, thinking you need local talent in MBB is a little off base. You could make an argument for football, but basketball not so much.

3. I have DirecTV in Iowa, I saw every ISU game with complete ease. The games are on Fox Sports, a few channels above and below the Big Ten Network.

4. According to Forbes, the B12 paid out to member institutions more than any other conference and that doesn't include their tier 3 monies. Top that with the fact that MBB at ISU averages over 13k attendance and they can legitimately pay him a higher salary than what Minnesota could even offer if it were to come to that.

None of this really matters though, the reality is that Hoiberg has been a part of the program since he was a water boy, if he hasn't bailed by now I doubt he's going to
.
But other than that, i think we have a shot.

Well... in Minnesota, it is the only major university in the state. I've commonly heard it referred to as The U up here.

The Goofers have never fully recovered from the Haskins debacle. They had ill-gained success and all the fans expect now is to match or even exceed that level of success. It is doubtful - unless a coach is really, really good or really, really lucky - that a coach is going to get enough time to turn that program around to the level that matches or exceeds the expectations up here.

Yeah, that really took me time to get used to when I moved up here.

They have to pay Tubby $2.5 million for his buyout. Plus pay a new coach a competitive salary? And upgrade facilities?
