I'm looking at driving home from Milwaukee to Des Moines on Thursday. Was supposed to leave Milwaukee around noon. Am I correct in saying my chances of making it home on Thursday are not good?

latest notes from NOAA:

THE NEXT STRONG SYSTEM WHICH WILL BE ONSHORE AND INTO THE FOUR CORNERS AREA WEDNESDAY

THE UPPER LOW WAS SEPARATED FROM THE SURFACE LOW. THIS RUN THEY ARE IN CLOSER PROXIMITY WHICH WOULD MAKE FOR A BETTER STORM

BY 18Z THURSDAY THE ENTIRE FORECAST AREA SHOULD BE SNOWING. WHILE IT IS TOO FAR OUT TO FORECAST SNOWFALL AMOUNTS THERE WILL LIKELY BE PERIODS OF MODERATE SNOWFALL.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW JUST WHERE THE HEAVIEST SNOW WILL SET UP

Snowdays an Sledding are her favorites.

you forgot booze, booze is also my favorite.

Possibly. What does it take up there in Madison?

I think it will have weakened quite a bit by the time it makes it there, but there may be enough early on Friday + the winds to make plows far enough behind for Friday morning to get a snow day.

Current track/timing really doesn't get things that exciting up you way until probably at least 6pm Thursday.

my office is a bit into the country - that storm in Dec gave the roads around it 6ft drifts and two days off. So drifting on n/s roads and snow putting the plows behind would be enough.

Get ready for a good winter storm. Looking at similar numbers up my way compared to Iowa. Winds, stronger initially but ease up into Friday after the storm occludes/weakens.

It's been fairly consistent for the last 3 1/2 days, which is a helpful trend in the long term!

My area has only seen 21" so far this winter (normal at this point is 36"). This would be by far the best storm of the season if it comes to fruition.

What has been the most consistent mid-range model this winter and in particular, this storm?

Typically the ECMWF (Euro) is the most reliable, especially at this range. The models are all in relatively good agreement for this storm, and have been for a couple days. That's unusual, so who knows what that really means.

Well, all agree except the GEM (Canadian). I don't really pay that one much attention. It's calling for a couple feet along/south I-80. Maybe that's why I ignore it.

12Z GFS is calling for 9.8 inches of snow. The "Earl map" is showing 11" but that is not adjusted for compaction.

Here is why I'm not buying it yet:

Of that 9.8 inches of snow, the GFS is calling for 7.3" to fall from 9am to Noon on Thursday.

7.3" in three hours.

Impossible? No. Just not sure I want to jump into that end of the pool yet.

We live in Cedar Rapids and have tickets for a concert in Ames Thursday night. Do we need to try to sell those tickets?

Exactly, my two sons also have tickets to the Miranda Lambert & Dirks Bently concert in Hilton on Thursday night. Do you think they might have to end up cancelling this concert?

Wow, that's the worst weather prediction I've ever seen.

"It could be an inch, or it could be more."

Really? Way to go out on a limb on that one!!

Wouldn't you love to have a job like that?
"When will the project be completed and what will it cost?"
"It could be done in a week or by the end of the year, and will cost somewhere between $300 and $300,000.
"OK. Good job!"
