If you want to increase the size of the student section (which, imho, is probably needed before too long) you're going to have to put students down there.

This is why I think they would be moved. Popularity of ISU football and Enrollment increase is off the charts.
You are going to have to expand the Student section eventually. (which is a good thing) Sure students don't bring too much money to the stadium but they bring a lot of intangibles.

Band on North. Students on the south. They could go back and forth

If they do have to expand the student but want to leave it where it is they will probably just have to have them spill over in to the north hill.
Or
somehow (and I don't know how) build a smaller one level section between the scoreboard pillars and the student section on the north hills. I would love to see this.

2 small sections in the North Hills
Bowl in the south endzone
We would then have full circle seating (with the bands help by the Jake)
You could literally not see out the facility because of full enclosure.
Total Seating 63-65K (which falls in line for the future)

Having the student section next to the visiting team allotment would not end well. By moving them, you're also displacing people who have paid more for their ticket, and pushing them into an area where they would be forced to shell out even more (plus donate, in some sections). I'm sure some of them who can't afford that extra expenditure would just walk away.

Make the NE hillside part of the student section, bump the price to match, and you eliminate the current advantage of buying a hillside ticket and sneaking into the student section.

Separating the band and students is a poor idea.

I'd imagine if you put students in the south endzone, you'd probably just put the visitor allotment in the old student section. Maybe they could build some sort of band cove in by the student section as part of the south endzone project as well.

Make the band stand on the hillside.

j/k. Not a bad idea to let the student section have the NE hillside. But would probably get difficult to "police". I can imagine the students would start leaving the upper deck less full and be jamming way too many kids into the hillside area.

I am sure JP is on it. I think the students need to stay with the team and with the band. The SEZ would fill up nicely if the tickets were priced right. Could probably give the students another section in the upper deck with no problem.

Don't knock my 22 second ms paint job. But I wonder what it would take to make lower level seating in north endzone hills. Maybe its not even possible. it wouldn't add a ton of seating, but would look a lot better. Plus solves the student section growing issue.

Temporarily, but that doesn't look like enough seating to keep up with growth when so many students already have tickets for that hillside.

How many student tickets do we sell currently? I can never remember. If we increase them by 500-1000 that would be a nice attendance bump that I had never thought of before. Along with however much they decide to add with the SEZ I think we could get up to 62 or 63k pretty easily.

A growing student section is a multi-faceted issue. First, it is great to have more and more students excited about our teams. Second, they don't generate much short-term revenue because their ticket prices are so low. Third, they generate tons of long-term revenue as donors and season ticket holders. Fourth, students are fickle. Students are some of the best fans, but also some of the worst. Too many are just bandwagon fans who won't show up on holidays, when the team is sliding, or when the weather is bad. If we build for them at their best, then we will likely have empty seats when they aren't at their best.

I wouldn't prioritize enlarging the student section, but keep doing things to energize the students who are committed. Sitting in the Student Section is a privilege. No student should expect to come late and have a place in the Student Section. However, they should be honored and respected for the contribution they make.

I think JP will leave those hillsides as the south ones would be gone. I like the idea though. My guess is that the student section will remain where it is and upper deck sections will be added as needed.

I have a son that is about 2.... I'm debating if I should get hillsides with him for Lil Cyclone Club or just keep my regular tickets. The people next to me said they are fine with us sneaking him in our section if he sits on our laps when we sit. I appreciate the gesture from them, and have sat next to them for the last 8 years, but don't really feel like burning bridges just incase.

That said.... I HATE the hillsides and they need to go. I let a friend's wife use my ticket along with my wife during the K-State game and sat on hillside with some others, and my legs were extremely sore from standing. Most of the time we got told to sit down. Even though the people in front of us wouldn't and we couldn't see.

I think moving the band and students to the south endzone would work. Move the visitor seating to the upper deck corners like most colleges have them. Then turn the last section of the current student section as GA for LiL Cyclone club along with current visitor sections. Or simply reserving all North hillside as Lil Cyclone club. Sucks you wouldn't be able to see the jumbotron but then again we have to sacrifice something.

Amazing how other colleges don't have this problem like we do. My two brainwashed nephews started going to Iowa games at the age of 3. And they sat through the games, didn't need a hillside, didn't need anything special, just a seat to sit. But I guess ISU kids must be special. I know they are the future fans and it's great to see all the advantages they have for getting into events compared to other schools. It makes their childhood unique and grows that bond with the university. At some point though the stadium needs to expand to make it seem big time and just to keep pace with others.

You start getting into obstructed views because of the Jacobson Building, so there's a limit on where you could build permanent seats.

Totally agree. I think we could get away with just increasing it by a little bit and still not worry about empty seats too much, but you are right those seats will empty quicker than any other seat in the stadium if we do poorly or weather is bad.

Any way someone could do a PhotoShop mock of what JTS would look like with the SEZ bowled in and with 2 decks?

I think so too, but I thought it would be cool to actually have seats 360 (with band)
Plus allows for Students to use that area.

This is a great post.

I would agree that I have a bunch of Hawk friends that bring their kids to their game and they don't complain about being able to sit on a blanket or throw a football during a High Level D1 Football game.

This seriously comes down to supply and demand and the product on the field along with enrollment growing and ticket prices. People are going to freak out that when we do bowl in there will not be any cheap tickets left.
If we ever take the next step (imagine if we where K-state this year) you could charge whatever you want for tickets. that being said if its cold and we suck then there will be empty seats. But isn't that true for any place?

If Iowa loses against Indiana, Purdue and Michigain and is sitting at 4-7 when playing Nebraska at home. I am guessing there will be a lot of NU fans there if you know what I mean. (aka...iowa fans not scalping)
Its hard to support a team that sucks in cold weather. That game might not be the best example because of the rivarly though.

I don't know a figure, but Jr Cyclone members have to sit on the hill. If their parents want to come to the game, the best option is to have hillside tickets. That is what we have done for the past 5+ years. There are 5,000 Jr Cyclone Members, but of course not all of them come to football games. You would roughly have about 1,500-2,000 parents (we have 2 kids with passes). Again, I have no idea the % that actually buy hillside tickets. Before the new scoreboard and record attendance we used to sit on the north hillsides. Now with the crowds we prefer to sit on the south so we can have a hope of seeing the game. I may be in the minority, but I bring my kids to WATCH the game. If I am shelling out money for donation, tickets, parking, tailgating, etc, I am going to the game to watch football. If my kids want to run around they can go play at a park. They have to sit on the confines of our blanket and at least pretend to enjoy being there. ;) They like the scoreboard games (helmet shuffle, race to the finish), the crowd participation songs, the band, the cheerleaders, and even the football game itself. The Jr. Cyclone Club now goes through 12th grade, so we aren't just talking about 3-8 year old kids and families.

Right. I just don't get why having only the North hill sides reserved for this is a problem. Sure it's not optimal for viewing the new scoreboard, but at some point something has got to give when you are paying for the cheapest seats in the stadium. Don't forget that endzone seats sold out almost immediately (like within hours if I remember correctly) and there was only a very limited supply that were even up for grabs (non-renewals). If SEZ seats are at a similar price point as the end zone season tickets (~150), they will be gobbled up fast by people willing to pay full price for a seat in that section.

The days of kids being able to run around and play football on the hillsides for every game are pretty much gone right now. The hillsides have been so packed this season that there isn't much room on the actual hillside to play catch. On the south end, basically under the SEZ bleachers is the only place I have seen kids able to play all game.

As the fanbase builds things are going to change. I think the plan is to keep the North Hills as is so I would expect most of the kids to migrate up there or they will end up in real seats with their parents. That's just how it has to be if we ever want to build the fanbase and have more seats/money to build the program.

Fact= the more interest in our football program, the more seats will cost EVERYWHERE as they will sell them for the most they can get as they should, and the less kids will be able to play like they are at a high school game. Might as well start getting mentally prepared for this now. I am not trying to tick the family crowd off, just pointing out the obvious.
