Just found an intersting little nugget about a possible assistant coach for the Big Red...

9:56 p.m., from Peter Gammons
• If Darin Erstad doesn't find a job that suits him, there is word that he could return to the University of Nebraska, his alma mater, and be an assistant coach for the football team. A punter in college, Erstad was part of the Cornhuskers' 1994 national championship squad and remains one of Tom Osborne's favorite players.

That is very interesting. Although I still think he has a few good years left in baseball, or was he injured?

Bringing in all the good-old-boys.

This could be a disaster for the Huskers.

He is falling apart... He is restricted to where he can play defensively now and doesn't have the power tobe a 1b, dh type.

Bringing in all the good-old-boys.

This could be a disaster for the Huskers.

Or it could work out... Personally, I like the HC being surrounded by guys he knows and trusts (see Chizik) rather than the AD telling the HC who his assistants are going to be, which sounds like what's going on...

This is going to be entertaining to watch. TO's image gets tarnished while nebraska implodes!!! He is going to go from God to the devil in the span of a few years.

Right...Tom seems to be hiring the assistants...not Pelini.

I think Tom and Jerry spent some time together the last few months. And no, I'm not referring to the cartoon.

Ok, so let's get this straight. Osbourne leaves and they promote from within. That guy keeps everyone until he is fired 1 year later, and they bring in ol billy. Billy sends everyone packing and brings in his own staff. Billy gets fired and now the old staff pretty much all comes back?

One problem Nebrasksa, no one runs the option anymore. Defenses figured it out and are too fast to fall for that anymore. Teams are starting to put their best athletes on defense now, so have fun running the power option.

This is going to be a disaster, and it is going to be FUN to watch! Wait till Kirk leaves Iowa and they promote KOK.

Talk about COMPLETE and total destruction of their football program... not only are they destroying the future but the past as well!

Matt Perrault on AM 590 in Omaha was saying that he was passed over by Pitt and Syracuse for a HC position. Not sure when that happened though.

Also, Travis Justice was pretty upset that the 2 best candidates (apparently) were a HC in the MAC and D-coordinator. As he stated, "That's the best that Nebraska can do? Who are we, Iowa State?" Perrault did defend the Chizik hire, saying that Pollard was the man for pulling that off.

As far as I'm concerned, we got the better end of that deal.

I AGREE mj that ISU got a better coach in Gene Chizik than what Nebbie got in Pelini...At least Chizik has a recruiting base in the "talent rich" deep south, where in the world is Pelini's recruiting base??....I got it boys....OMAHA NEBRASKA!!!!:biglaugh:

So Ron Brown, he was the tight ends coach 4 years ago, and then is going back to take the same job? Did he not get any promotions in 4 years? You would think he could move up higher than tight ends coach.

Boy you nailed it. Osborne might as well be the HC since he is hiring all the out of work NU former players he can find. That is a recipe for failure. They might have some reasonable success (7-5, 8-4) but forget he glory days with Uncle Tom hiring through the good ole boys network.

Some of the people I know here in Omaha don't mind Travis that much, it's Matt Perrault that they can't stand. I think it's because Matt is a realist and tells it like it is most of the time.

For instance, he stated last week sometime that the Michigan job was hands down better than Nebraska, and the callers for the rest of the day ripped him up and down. Most Husker fans are too delusional to realize the truth.

Actually, it appears that Ron Brown has been out of coaching since being on Solich's staff in 2003. Not sure why you'd want a guy who has been out of the business for 4 years, but that's just my opinion.

I know your down in that region, but, there were a lot of Texas fans on this website telling us that they hated to see him go....

Besides, when your an assistant at one of the super powers and you leave, they believe they can succeed with any coach because the talent level will overcome bad coaching....

News flash for these schools........

NEBRASKA 2007 Season - check it out..............Talent don't win all games, the talent with the coaching wins ballgames....

Besides, Frank Solich wanted Pelini to get the job and so did a large portion of their fan base, but, the AD thought he wanted a BIG NAME to bring in BIG TIME dollars...as if they need it!!!!!!!!

I don't doubt that you're right. I'm sure there are a number of UT fans who miss Chizik. I think a lot of them thought they'd be just fine though, and since they blamed him for their defensive problems last year they were happy to see him go at the time, but now that they've had problems with Akina and their OC, Greg Davis, I think they realize that they have bigger problems that affect the whole team and staff. While I understand that their fanbase has high expectations every year, it's fun watching them get taken down a peg or two.

The Husker fans have high expectations and are experts in college football analysis. They said last September (before USC loss) that they "were back", for certain. They said ISU may have a decent season in a couple of years with Chizik.

Both teams ended up with the same conference record.

This time they may want to wait for the results first, before "order is restored".

Is the alleged candidate - HC for the Mac - Frank Solich ?

Justice is a self-proclaimed hawk fan. Did he really say 'we'? He is very realistic as well, the Huskers are his work, not his team.

I think Nebraska will be back in the next 2-3 years and atleast make it to a conference title. They will probably win a conference title in the next 5 too...
