Loved that frozen over Friley Hall Laverne Lake when they had to rescue/remove the frozen swans in the Great Blizzard of 76. That was a rescue operation that could have been on TV.

Ok so obviously there is the bitter cold and the winds that make winter any where in Iowa SUCK, but if you can get past the bitter cold, Iowa State can be a great place in the winter.

Post your favorite things here

As for me, I love it when it snows at night. The big fluffy flakes falling, snow on everything.

Or today, riding across campus the carillioner (sp?) was playing Christmas carols on the campinelle. And for those who have been away a while, in the winter they light the clock faces with red and yellow lights now (yellow on the North and South faces, red on the East and West)

Good stuff

Are you kidding. It is dark and depressing not to mention freeing. Ames is no place to be between November and June.

My personal favorite....

The groundskeepers using one of these bad boys to polish the ice in the mornings.

Depressing in March/early april when all it does is rain and you don't see the sun for a month.

The flowers and blooming trees are freak'n beautiful at the end of April, and the only depressing part is everyone leaving for the summer.

And I forget who all mentioned it but of course sledding on dining hall trays, the hill by the ice rink, and the snow uh, scultpures are all parts of ISU winter that I'm going to miss when I'm gone.

Uh yeah Mrs. Geoffery, I'm gonna return this tray...

The best ISU winter memory was a nasty storm during the winter of 90-91 that closed down campus so my roommate and I walked the 1 block to Welch Ave and drank beer and played pool for 12 hours and were still home by 10 pm.

I remember not getting all the snow off my shoes and having puddles around me feet during class, watching people fall was always fun too. Oh and I guess it can be fun to watch snow fall as well. And can't forget the time classes were cancelled for the big storm that never happened.

The people who rip on the weather in Ames and at ISU make me wonder why in the world they would ever choose to go to a school that had temperatures below 60 degrees. I mean you knew about that going in, right? Or does it just make you feel good to "look down your nose" at all of us who enjoy some aspects of the winter weather? I never quite understood that. I mean I'm glad that they're a fellow alumnus but geez...

I agree. That goes on anywhere you go around here. I have people griping at me all winter season long about how cold it is and it sucks. Then move somewhere else. The only time of year I dont like is when the snow is melting and you get that wet dirty brown look everywhere.

I could tell you that, but I would be lying. ISU students know how to have alot more fun than most!

Last winter, the guys who lived in the house across the street from me made a snow woman who was, ah, bent forward and a snow man who was, ah, standing behind her and "giving her the business" (in honor of a thread from last week). The happy couple stood on the corner of Hyland and West St and it was amazingly detailed for being made out of just snow and rocks.

How about that ice storm we had last winter? We got a bunch of ice during the day, and then it snowed even harder during the night. Campus was just beautiful the day after! I wish I had a camera. :(

Here are a couple of my favorites from that storm...

At least you are wearing more clothes in this picture. :twitcy:

Mrs.

Yeah not a lot of pictures exist of me wearing much more clothing than that one, and the noteable exceptions were costumes...

Don't worry, I don't have digital copies of me frolocking in the snow and making snow angels in just my shorts and shoes...

Forgot about taking your POS car out to the Hilton parking lots and doing donuts in the un-plowed lots. Or using said POS car and tie a sled or saucer to the bumper and try to whip your friend around on it.

With your mom
After a good snow we would rent cross-country skis at the Armory Rec and head over to Veenker.
Also sledding at the Arboretum over by Cap Timm Field. If you did not pay attention you would end up in the creek.

Good times, Good times.
