Why would a preferred walk on greyshirt? Kron is on scholarship already.

Just to be clear, you realize there is a Kron and a Krick, correct?

Kron, as I previously stated, was a known scholarship player that grayshirted and is now redshirting. The question concerning Kron is his progress. He played some DE in the spring game. Is he still at DE? Krick, is a redshirt freshmen walk-on, who did not grayshirt. We are starting to build some depth on the DL, but if Krick can get weight up, he looked like he had a chance.

Why wouldn't any walk-on with desire to earn a scholarship grayshirt (delay enrollment)?

You are right. I combined the two players.

Still why would any walk-on with a desire to earn a scholarship greyshirt?

Greyshirting is delaying entrance and coming in on scholarship after paying for a semester.

To gain an entire year of S&C and half a year practice? That is a big advantage, especially for guys like Krick who are beefing up. It would be ideal to grayshirt as many players as possible imo.
Plus, there is no issue with having to self-finance that delayed semester, as they would regardless. If anything, it makes more sense for walk-ons to grayshirt.

Greyshirting is delaying entrance, regardless of whether you will be on scholarship. Do you also reserve the term redshirting for only scholarship players?

Playing Irving this year will pay dividends next season, even if he didn't get a lot of PT. People forget that if he was redshirting, he would be playing the scout team D, so he wouldn't get nearly as much fundamental time nor would he get time in our defensive system.

This isn't 1982 anymore and if you get 4 good years out of an out-of-state player, that is pretty good. Also, the better programs get athletes that are closer to playing right away, so the better we get as a program, hopefully we'll see more non-redshirt players.

No I do not reserve redshirting but you are now comparing apples to oranges.

Name a walk on who had greyshirted. You won't be able to because you do not understand that they come on scholarship after their delay. Greyshirts are not for walk ons no matter how you sell it.

It is the same principle. You are letting what you believe is conventional, blind you to the definition of grayshirting.

Redhsirting (siting out a year while enrolled) does not require a scholarship, neither does grayshirting (delaying enrollment). Grayshirting by definition is very much about walk-ons, as players who grayshirt would otherwise need to walk-on for a year, then go on scholarship.

I believe Paul Zinnel has.

Believe what you wish. Greyshirting is by no means about walk ons.

Irving will be a beast next year. I think Hayes might come in and start but he also may redshirt. I look toward to this group in the future

I am amazed that you are having such a struggle with this.

Grayshirts pay their way the first semester or two with a promise of a scholarship - no delayed enrollment. Walk-ons pay their way without a scholarship promise.

???????

We want to be able to redshirt most of our players.

Along those lines, I am still baffled that Chizik felt it wise to play Dutch as a true freshman. Would love to have him next year.
That was desperation", not "wisdom".

Hayes doesn't have a redshirt available. He used it his first year at juco.

???????

We want most of our players to be good enough to come in and contribute right away.
Raise the expectations...

Just collected notes...

CPR said earlier in the season that Jensen could be a good player, he just didn't know how soon, because he had a lot of work to do.

He also said, late in the season, that Woods could become a special players.

I'd expect Simon and Pompey to be strongly in the mix, but if necessary,JMcD can play NT.

I think Morrissey might be best served redshirting, with the experienced depth we have at end, but I'm looking forward to seeing what Lemke brings to the table.

If Caspers stays at D, that's an awful lot of seniors along the DL--McD, Laing, Simon, Caspers, Maggitt and Nelson. Am I missing anyone?

I'm amazed you are so confident yet do not understand how they work. Like I said, believe what you wish. I don't know how you got this whole walkon and greyshirt idea so intertwined in your head, but good for you.

http://recruiting-101.com/what-is-a-grayshirt-scholarship-offer/:

Basically a grayshirt is when an athlete delays his enrollment at his future college so that his eligibility clock will not start ticking until he arrives on campus during the second semester of the year.

I don't think a walk on would ever greyshirt. That wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.

Thats fine Rhoadhoused. I understand what it is perfectly fine. Walk ons just don't do it. Its not used for walk ons. In today's college landscape it is to get around the 85 scholarship number or in the SEC the 25 a year number.

What's wrong with Jake m playing nose?

I didn't say anything was wrong with it. I didn't even imply that. Don't have a clue where you got that...

He is, however, the returning starter at tackle. If Simon, Pompey or Woods aren't ready at the nose, I'd figure he'd flip over, and Laing step up.

Not that I think it'll matter much anyway, if they're playing a six man (or more) rotation inside again.

You aren't typically going to see a 6'5" guy playing nose. Between Simon, Pompey, and Woods we are going to be in good shape at NG.
