Herman to Ohio State?

I hadn't realized there was talk of Tom Herman going to Ohio State as a QB coach.

How big of a loss would this be? Frankly I don't think our offenses have been all that dynamic, certainly not as much as I would have expected three years ago.

That said, by now they've had a chance to get their own recruits in the system and some of those key pieces (Barnett, especially) are maturing into their roles. I could easily see an explosion next year.

And of course, any lack of continuity always hurts.

Why would he leave an offensive coordinator position to become a QB coach?

Re: Herman to Ohio State?

A few names have been tossed around as potential QB coaches, from former UM QB coach Scot Loeffler last week to ISU's Tom Herman this week. Another name to keep an eye on if Herman flames out is UConn QB coach Joe Moorhead, a Fordham grad who interviewed for the head job at his alma mater Tuesday, and is also rumored as a potential hire for Akron. The talk seems to be trending in the direction of Herman.

Re: Herman to Ohio State?

Not that it would be the end of the world if he left, but why would he leave an OC job for a QB coach? I don't know what the pay differences are, though. And if he is wanting to be a head coach someday, he would be taking a step backwards for his future.

That being said, I hope he doesn't leave. We need continuity in our coaching staff.

Re: Herman to Ohio State?

I am sure Herman's ultimate goal is to become a head coach at some point down the road and taking a step back from being an OC to simply being a QB coach... well I just don't see how that is an advantage for him in the long run.

Count me in as seeing this being a step backwards for Herman. Regardless of differences in pay or prestige at Ohio State, a BCS conference coordinator > any position coach anywhere.

Exactly. A QB coach, even from Ohio State, probably would not get an FBS level coaching job without going through an OC position there or somewhere else again afterward.

Of course it's a step backward in terms of coaching rank. But is being a QB coach at Ohio State worth more than OC at Iowa State? In terms of pay, visibility, and career potential I think a strong case could be made.

well i beleive Urban calls his own plays does he not? Would be a dumb move if you ask me, and a loss for us, but what ev. happens all the time. Okie State did alright after losing their cordinators.

Re: Herman to Ohio State?

I doubt he's leaving,,,

If it DID happen, his leaving would help solidfy CPR's staying. CPR is not going to be in the (outside) market without a head offensive coach and a defensive coach that is 65+ years old.

Only really makes sense if CPR highly encouraged him to find another place of employment... which seems a bit early for that.

Heard Herman on the call in show one night and he made a comment about it being the first complement he's received since he's been here. Sounded to me like he needs to bristle up a bit before he tries moving up the ladder.

Being able to learn from the offensive mind of Urban Meyer would be great for any offensive coordinator. Herman is still young...it may be a good career move for him.

Re: Herman to Ohio State?

I heard this too yesterday and I didn't buy it. Would be a step back for him. I have no doubt that Ohio State would be able to pay a QB coach the equivalent of what an OC would make at Iowa State, but it would still be a step back in prestige and career and I've never heard of a coach make that kind of move voluntarily.

Re: Herman to Ohio State?

IMO it would be a significant setback for ISU if Herman leaves. While the offense has had issues at times they are averaging nearly 400 yards per game this season with a JUCO QB with 1 year of QB experience and a redshirt freshman QB playing BCS level college football for the first time. We have had a patchwork offensive line all season due to suspension (UNI game) and injuries. The only game where we really had our entire starting line together was the Iowa game. This has led to more then a few stupid false start penalties and with younger guys playing on the OL you can always count on more holding penalties then normal as well. Turnovers have been a big contributing factor as well in lowering our yards per game and average points scored on offense. How many turnovers has ISU committed inside the opponents 30 this year? 2 against Iowa, 1 against K-State, 2 against Oklahoma State, 1 against Oklahoma, 2 against Baylor (IIRC), 1 against Texas Tech, etc..... Those turnovers all directly resulted in points off of the scoreboard.

In reality when you think about it... with all of the youth on offense for ISU this year and the brutal schedule we had to play Tom Herman has done a pretty outstanding job. He handled the QB switch, RB injuries, WR injuries, etc... and the offense really didn't skip a beat. The only game our offense really looked overmatched was the Oklahoma game and well... in the past 60 years when has that not been the case against OU?

Retaining Herman needs to be a big priority for CPR and JP.

I have seen lateral moves then promotions, but this is a step back. Chris Ash made the move to UW as the same position coach, but then was immediately promoted to Co defensive coordinator.

its Ohio State. Of course you take that job over an OC at ISU. Probably pays more as well.

People. He's the OC of a school that's going to score like a pinball machine in arguably the best conference with a young clan of weapons.

Scot Loeffler was QB coach for Meyer a few years back, and he translated that into an OC position.

At Temple.

No way Herman leaves to be a peon coach in a non-quarterback league for a shattered program led by a guy with an anxiety disorder.

The position is a great opportunity for someone. Just not him, and certainly not now. If he was offered and took that position, I'd be glad, because it would make me realize that he's too stupid to coach in this business (he isn't, obviously!) and I'd prefer not to have someone with brain damage running our shiny new offense next year.

You have my personal guarantee that this will not happen. Redeemable at any Wal-Mart. Some restrictions apply.

Re: Herman to Ohio State?

Coaching is about who you know. Urban Meyer >>>>> Paul Rhoads. Ohio State is also more visible. If he can do a half decent job getting Urban a quarterback that looks good (should be easy when they get to pick who they want) he'll be able to move up either as a coordinator in a good program or head coach in some capacity...even if it is a smaller school.
