MU will probably be regretting their move in five years too...

The difference of course is what they're leaving. WVU is already in a geographically far flung conference that is on the verge of collapsing. It also pays very little.

Missouri is in a conference whose main source of instability is Missouri themselves. That conference is geographically aligned in the Plains states and it has a very large and lucrative TV contract.

The Big East is going down the tubes. West Virginia has to leave to stay in a relevant league. Missouri is already in a relevant league.

Everything I read from the reporters "in the know" is this is just the first step. The Big 12 does not want to be the cause for the death of the Big East. But the Big 12 will be delivering a stomach blow to the Big East where the ACC delivered at head shot. In the end the Big East will just crumble from within and schools will start applying to other conferences and WV will have teams in their region to compete with. This whole thing about the 10 teams is just for 2012-2013 and possibly 2013-2014, but after that more expansion will take place (Big East has a 27 month exit period).

I like it. WVU has been a good athletic school in recent years. Don't know much about their academics, but should be a good fit. So their not close, big deal. It's better than being in the MWC.

ISU would play at WVU no more than once every two years. Not exactly a big deal.

I would love this, I live in Virginia about 3 hours from WVU. The area is beautiful and they have a rabid fan base. I think they'd be a GREAT addition to the Big 12. I've been hoping all along this would happen. Now add Cincy and Louisville to get to 12 and we're set.

First of all if the Big 12 absorbed the remaining Big East teams to go to 16 your not causing the death of the Big East, you gave their remaining teams an actual option. I think they would sign up for that in a heartbeat.

Initially, I'm skeptical and not sure what that would do to revenues, but it was reported the conference commissioners discussed a league dedicated network and if we are only at 10 and Texas & OU have their own I'm not sure how much value there is to a conference network. But, if you add some of the larger markets the Big East has and add to that the appeal of some of the existing Big 12 teams maybe a network would work and turn a profit.

Apparently talks between ND and Big12 are "heating up" according to Chip Brown. But we all know how good of a source he is....

So apparently the Big 12 is the only conference concerned with adding teams to improve the quality of product they put out. By adding TCU and WVU we would have added to schools with excellent recent football success but minimal new market value as far as TV's go. For the record, I like that.

I do think this may be the first domino to fall in a series of three defections to our league though and it has been mentioned this move makes a lot of sense if 'Ville and Cincy bridge the geographical gap.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I don't like the idea of "everything but football" members. Notre Dame has to be in all the way, or not.

If Notre Dame can get a spot with that arrangement, nothing stops BYU from the doing the same.

And I suppose I have no real argument why I feel that way — probably just a crusty traditionalist.

Yeah, I'm with you. Adding Notre Dame's non-football sports has done nothing to stabilize the Big East. Either add schools for everything, or don't add them. Plus, it gives precedence for Texas going independent in football and leaving their other sports in the Big XII.

I agree with you, they either need to be all in or nothing, can't imagine that sits very well with Chuck, kind of like Smiles and says "Okay sure we'll take you" and means the exact opposite.

I don't think a BYU football only and ND basketball and olympic only pairing would be soooo terrible. If you're deciding between adding that pair and adding say Cincinnatti in all sports, wouldn't you rather have the BYU/ND pair?
