I can't make it through this thread. This will be happening to me very soon and I just can't deal with it. He has been my best friend since I was 5. Can't imagine my life without my Max.

A little more than 5 years ago we had to put our 2 Beagles down within 6 months of each other. Simba was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 5 years of age. Six months later Nala was diagnosed with kidney disease at 7 years of age. We have not been able to get another pet since. There was no way I could be in the room when the time came. I balled for days.

Getting another pet was part of the healing process for me. Couldn't go looking where the food bowl should have been without thinking about Ebony and adopting Mandy helped the situation. She wasn't Ebony, but she focused my attention that longed for having a pet.

This thread hits home because our family cat is getting up there too. She is really thin despite eating regulary and goes to the bathroom very frequently. I would hate to do this but our first family cat I found lying dead in the basement which I won't lie really messed me up.

That was the way my dad was with our first dog. It took him 15+ years to get another dog. He felt terrible about it for a long time. My family got a cat about a year after the dog had to be put down and I was pretty close with it. Even though I hadn't lived at home in years it hit me like a ton of bricks when I heard that she had been put down. I was a zombie for a couple of days.

To the op, it is god awful experience, but if you can stand it I would be in the room with them. I'm sure they would like to have their last moment with their loved ones.

this makes me sad, my dog is getting pretty old and isn't in the greatest shape, i got her as a birthday present when i was in 4th grade, i remember countless days running in the yard with her, talking her on walks around the lake by my house, all the stupid stuff she used to do that i still laugh about today, i remember when my grandma passed away she didn't leave my side for at least 2 days she followed me everywhere, and all the other little countless things, a dog is a best friend and its hard to say goodbye, replacing your first dog is very hard to do..sorry to hear about your loss

I hate you guys for all the posts in this thread. Struggling not to tear up. All I can think about is knowing I'm going to have to do this with my dog someday. He's more or less a "pre-kid" for my fiance and I, so it will be really tough to see him go.

We had to have our 3 year old cat put down last summer. On of the most sucky things I've ever had to do, but it had to be done. What made it worse was she was the first birthday present I bought for my wife.

Unfortunately she had a corn allergy which went undiagnosed until it screwed up her ears, which also screwed up her equilibrium. We could never figure out why she never jumped on things until long after the allergy was diagnosed. And you don't realize just how many cat products have corn in it, and I'm not just talking about food, but also cat litter. Which, as far as we can tell, was a contributing factor to the blockage that she developed in her urinary tract that was the reason we had to put her down (probably also explained why she would always pee on the floor and not on the litter box).

Unfortunately she was never a healthy cat, and the most humane thing was to put her down. But we still miss her terribly.

This august had to put one of our dogs down, also Max. Vet was awesome and suggested that we stay with her as our other dog would know she had passed by her scent on us. He was right. Never easy, but definately stay with them.

Not a vet but sounds like she might be diabetic. Our current cat was like that. Boney as hell, eating a lot and then sometimes not at all, but most of all drinking a ton of water, enough that she was flooding the litter box. Diabetes diagnosed, two insulin shots a day and it is like she was a brand new cat. Weight restored, drinking and peeing a lot less.

Like I said, not a vet, but you might want to have your vet look into it.

I had a pretty terrible experience with our cat last summer. We noticed that she was losing weight, and eating her litter. She was anemic, which caused her to eat litter for iron. Then she got to the point where she couldn't walk without dragging her back legs and would turn in circles. It was TERRIBLE. Found out that she had a disease that was deteriorating her brain. We had to bring her in to be put down, and it was one the hardest things I've ever had to do.

I know some people say, oh it's just a cat, but when they meet you at the door every time you come home and sit at the end of the recliner with you all night, it sucks when they aren't there anymore. We had to get a new cat just to get out us out of our funk, and he sitting with me while I watch MNF. We have a picture of her with her collar hanging on it on a shelf.

The Last Battle or If It Should Be

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done?
For this - the last battle - can't be won

You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand.
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me to where my needs they'll tend.
Only, stay with me 'til the end,

And hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no loves see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do for me.

Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do.

We've been so close - us all - these years,
Don't let your hearts hold any tears.

I got this from a vet who had treated our dog after they found out we had him put down. Hope it helps.

Had to put down our 9 year old Boston Terrier last November, first time I have had to put a pet down. She developed tumors and went down hill quickly. We knew it would be best for her, but man was it hard. We also have an 11 year old Boston who is still kicking well, but has slowed down a lot in the past year.

Our vet gave her a pain/relaxer shot, and then gave her a shot in her heart about 5 minutes later to stop the beating. Longest 20 or so minutes of my life to take and wait with her, but have no regrets of staying with her vs. letting them do it without me there to comfort her (helped with my closure) as well.

Came home and hugged my other one hard, and am thankful to work from home so that I get to keep an eye on him on a daily basis.

I gotta admit, I am too a little.

I'm not gonna lie I cried after reading three posts. Reminds me of the two dachsunds my grandparents had. One old one young. The younger one died at 6 years of heart failure. Wasn't overfed or anything like that. Was a healthy dog all in all. The older moped around and you could tell it clearly affected him. He died several weeks later. Loved those two dogs so much even though they weren't mine. Can't imagine what I'll be like when MY dog goes.

I will prolly get some slack for this but I will say that losing a pet is almost worse than losing someone u know. I lost my dog last year but due to being hit by a car. my point of view is that they are right there by your side for everything u do. I have currently have 2 dogs and love them dearly, I just cant imagine the day I dont have one them by my side.

I put my Husky down some years ago and my father and I cried pretty heavily. It was an odd day. We cooked up a steak and let him eat what he could the night before we took him in.

No slack from me. Wanted to say that but I was afraid we'd have some inconsiderate jerk here say that its just a dog or just a pet. They're more than that. They become a part of who you are and the family.

I woke up one morning this July, and took one look at our dog and knew it was time. I knew it was coming, but thought we'd have more time with him.
Unfortunately, I was flying out of town on business that morning, so the final duty fell to my wife. I thought she was going to take care of it in the evening, but when I landed and pulled up my text messages, she told me it was over. Not sure what I thought was gonna happen, but I felt cheated somehow.
And I let everyone else off the plane as I pulled myself together. Not my manliest moment.

No slack from me either. While this thread is sad it really puts things in perspective from all the other stuff on this board at the moment.
