I'm not an Apple fan, but I'd be lost without my ipod touch. It syncs/charges perfectly with the CD deck I just installed in my car too, which is pretty cool.

So in short, just get an ipod. Go to walmart or something and feel one out. See which one best fits your budget and her style.

When FW was great, it was BEFORE USB 2.0. Apple put FW in computers over a decade ago. Get over it.

Get over it? Its still around my friend. If it goes away, Ill get over it, much like parallel ports of old.

Apple does a good job of making things look pretty on the outside but they are usually not first to market. I had an MP3 player long before the Ipod was even a thought. Of course it only held about 10 songs and was the size of a small suitcase.

I'll give credit to Apple for the Iphone and Ipod. They are both excellent products that forced other companies to catch up. They've also had many failures but that's part of the business.

This. Good god did I hate firewire, good thing I never jumped on that.

There are plenty of ways to criticize Apple for being a closed off company, but since they led the charge for USB I don't see how this is even remotely one of them. They were the first company making USB standard on all their products, they also helped everyone out by speeding up the move away from floppy discs. No Apple computer ever shipped with firewire that didn't also have several USB ports, back in 98 I was showing all my PC user friends the USB ports on my Mac tower and they barely knew what they hell they were.

I had a Diamond Rio 64mb player in 97 or 98, then the iPod came out just months later and measured storage in gb, it was a quantum leap forward until the copycats started a year later.

I have no beef with USB guy, I just did not like firewire.

Ditto. This guy is clearly either rather young, or has had little need for transferring lots of data.

USB 1.0 vs. firewire was like water from a straw vs. a fire hose.

His argument is even more silly since Apple was the first company to lead the charge for both standards. USB became popular and accepted faster in large part because Apple started shipping 100% of their computers with USB before PC manufactures even started thinking about it.

I had Rio that I won from BigWords.com, it was 99. iPod came out during the 00-01 school year the Rio was mothballed shortly there after.

FWIW, I've had an IPOD for about 3-4 years and it is a beautiful machine. Intuitive and easy to use.

Costly, yes, But at this stage of use, I'd say I've gotten my money's worth.

Were you on some special list? The Ipod didn't come out until late 2001. In 2000, creative had a 6gb mp3 player.

Youre kidding right? I understand the speed differences. I was transferring files long before either was around. I dont know why you keep bringing "apple was the first" crap into this. I didnt like firewire, which is completely ok. USB has been my staple, never really had the desire to pay more for firewire when USB was tolerable. Not sure where the fight is, but keep going I guess if makes you happy.

I have an I-Pod question for any tech wizard out there. I have an I-pod touch that is stuck in a "restoration loop" meaning its in restore mode, and when I go to restore it in just gives me a 1604 error. I've tried about everything I can think of: updating Itunes, restarting my computer, trying different USB wires, and I've also tried about any solution I could find on Google.

Anyone have this happen and have any answers?

funny you mention you won it, because I actually won mine too in a contest at CES convention in Vegas. They must have really been promoting those things.

It was actually great for running since it was really light and 10-20 songs is all you need. I didn't get an iPod till the 2nd or 3rd generation so I actually used mine a good 3 years or so but only for going on runs, never over time periods longer than an hour.

Even at just 32, 64 or 128mb it was so obvious they were the future with people still walking around with portable CD and tape players. Same with iTunes when the first version came out on OSX 1.0, I told this one friend when it went to PC that it was going to be huge. To this day we laugh that he told me iTunes launch for PC didn't offer anything different than WinAmp already did.

I guess i forgot how long I used my rio, you're right about the launch time.

Do you have a link to the creative 6gb mp3 player? Was it really as portable with comparable battery life? Or was it more like a full sized hard drive? Even if it was more portable, the true innovation of the iPod was its development alongside iTunes. The visual interface upgrade over other music playing software and ease of use of iTunes at the time was absolutely essential.

Apple was first to push USB standard on their computers in addition to firewire is what I'm saying.

Don't know if it was you or someone else, but someone pointed out Firewire as an example of them being a closed off company using only their own standards. Kind of silly when they led the charge to USB. There are plenty of other areas where they actually are closed off.

As far as charging/connecting their iPods/iPhones with a unique interface, I think it would be stupid for them to do anything else given how many copycat devices there are. Many of these devices aren't even trying to look different on the outside, they're blatant ripoffs.

To add my opinion, without adding fuel to the fire of which company stole who's ideas, I really like the iPod. Granted, I haven't used anything else in about 5 years, but it also goes with the fact that my company uses macs, therefore I have one at home. So, I don't spend much time on PCs at all anymore. When I did, it seemed like a big pain to easily transfer everything I wanted from my PC to the couple of mp3 players I owned before 2005. Now granted, this was a long time ago and i'm sure the technology has changed a bit.

I have an iPod touch now and am blown away by the uses it gives me and the ease at which it syncs with my computer and just does it's thing. Battery life is a bit questionable at times, but I have figured that has more to do with it's poor meter for charge capacity. Basically, it looks fully charged when it isn't.

I'm not a big fan of putting all of my eggs in one basket, i.e. owning everything apple or ms. I do believe though that a lot of your purchase perspective may come from what kind of computer you have as your base for uploading songs, movies, apps, etc. The only thing I don't like about the touch, which is the same for the iPhone, is the lack of flash compatibility. it makes browsing the web a pain at times. Other than that, I would recommend the iPod touch to anyone looking for portable entertainment. But I would also say, I haven't messed with anything else in the last 5 years. So I probably am a bit biased.
