Agreed. I don't know how anybody would learn the words, so maybe if they did this they could get started with that.

And while we are on the topic of school songs, I really wish they also made a better effort with the Alma Mater. Bells of Iowa State is a great Alma Mater and it seems like we totally waste it, it just serves as a period of awkward down time during the band's pregame show.

I think it would be really cool to start a tradition of the team singing this with the students at the end of each game. I see this on TV at a lot of other schools and always think it just shows a great deal of tradition and pride in the school, and we could always use a little bit more of that around here.

If you hang around instead of leaving right after the game (or early :skeptical:), the band plays Bells before we leave.

Technically, it's neither. The song was written as an instrumental-only piece. Band members have a looooong history of creating lyrics to songs that don't have them, and that's exactly what happened here. Since the song was called "Go Cyclones, Go" but didn't have any lyrics, the band back in the day decided that the title WOULD be the lyrics. Those were the only lyrics sung for 30 years, with a brief exception in the 70s (as noted in the first quoted post above). It returned to the one-line lyrics for a while, then the student body morphed it into "Don't know the words". As far as I've been able to ascertain, the "stupid ******* song" ending started to appear in force around 1993 or 1994, but wasn't really widespread until close to the end of the decade.

The band realizes that people who aren't in the band have no idea what they're chanting, at any point in time, ever, right?

When I was in the band, I was pretty sure that I was in the minority of people who actually knew/wanted to acknowledge this.

I've never heard anyone say "mother ******* salt" in Margaritaville.

There are no lyrics other than the regular ones and the song is directly affiliated to the Landshark brand which is directly affiliated to the Miami Dolphins who directly employed Todd Doxzon for a year or two who is directly an alum of Iowa State University so when all of you put down that song you are put down the University.

Not so fast, I think certain crowds would be mfing salt. I'll be in Key West in a couple weeks and that song is played repeatdly. I'll do some observing and report back.
Thank you for taking the time to investigate on this pressing issue. It's important!

That's another Cyclone 1st down - band
The Wave - band
The idea to wear the school colors on gameday - band
The spread offense - band.

Wow, I know you're joking but that's an impressive connection you just made.

As a former VMB member myself, I am well aware of that. What I was advocating was that the team and students join in the singing of it, which is a tradition you will see at a lot of other schools. How many people on this site that aren't former band people even know the words to that song?

I know the words, but it should be played at a time when people are actually there, if we want people to sing it. Also, put the words up on the board and people will look to see what's there. If we have to put up the words of the fight song during the time out, I'd think we can put up the words to "Bells."

And, I challenge those of you left in Cyclone Alley to sing the National Anthem out loud. Lead the crowd. I'll join in.

I like to contribute to the CF society, we don't need them looking like idiots when this song is played. It will have to wait until I'm back, no computers for me. Just beach, sun, and drinking. Lots of drinking.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the words to Bells are displayed on either the main video board or the side boards at football games. The band plays Bells like 15 min before kickoff, so it's not like nobody is there.

You're right. I was thinking of BB games.
