Wow, why would they hire a teacher

Best option would be to go to another section providing it's a large lecture and you don't have attendance points... even still, it may be better to forgo the attendance points to get an overall higher grade in the course. As to why they put these people as teachers - Research. They're all researchers and in most cases, have to teach a class. Is it fair to the students? No, but if you're on a curve it evens out. You have that problem with a lot of the departments at any college.

Well, it may be your first, but it most certainly won't be your last one at ISU.

at harper (my community college i went to) they hired teachers that were mainly retired at their professions but had a passion for teaching. I never met one teacher that didn't love what they do, they may not have been the smartest ones in their classes, but their hard work and passion made them really good, if not great teachers.

For the most part, the teachers do like what they are doing, but this lady, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, its like she is just there as a weed out, as everyone will fail her class because no one knows a damn thing.

that cant speak english?!? seriously, wtf

I understand people having accents, but seriously, why would they hire someone that CANT speak english?!?!??!?!!??!!??!?!!!??!?

calculus 3 is hard enough, i'm spending 4x the effort learning calculus on my own then being able to study for my other classes.

What is the point of a teacher that can't teach the material? Everyone just stares at the wall with blank faces because they don't know what the hell she is talking about. Then, when you ask a question "uh, eehz, uhss, umms, no, if u look dee book sez dis" and points to section 11.4 while we are on 11.2....

this is bs, who the hell hires these people? U'd figure the first thing about teaching here is having some proficiency in english.

Seriously, file a complaint and encourage others to do the same. I did this with my Sales and Marketing Professor who read from the book each day as if we were a bunch of freaking grade schoolers. Talk about a waste of money.

He lasted two semesters.

all sections full :(

is there anyone i can complain this too? i'm busting my ***, and not letting a teacher that cant teach ruin my gpa

Get into another section with an add slip, but make sure you let the department head know that you can't understand the professor. Many departments do take the whole being able to speak english thing seriously.

This.

Department Heads are under immense pressure to increase - and retain - students right now.

There it is. Difference between a HS or CC and a research institution. ISU wants professors who are going to get grant money and do noteworthy research. That's more important than being a good "teacher" or proficiency in English. It sucks, but it's all about business.

At least you have multiple sections as an option. My Aerodynamics prof had such poor English that when he was filmed for a Discovery TV show, they subtitled him for the viewers. There was only one section, it was only offered in the fall, and he was probably going to teach it next year.

Hope it works out for you. Calculus (and math is general) is either great or ****** depending on your prof.

vicious cycle much? American students arent getting them because they cant pass the classes when they dont understand the profs?

Eh, I don't think that is it at all. As an engineer I survived plenty of classes where the prof could barely speak English. It doesn't make it easier, but it doesn't make it impossible either.

I think the big issue is the amount of work it takes to get through a phd program and payoff waiting at the end. In a lot of fields it just isn't worth it. I think the foreign students just have a different mentality about things. Most US students see that they can go make a very good living for themselves with a bachelors or masters and they get out and make their money. The don't have the desire to give up another 3 or 4 years to get something that may not be of much financial benefit.

I had that problem with one of my classes. She was from China and I could only understand 10% of what she was saying. So I skipped a majority of the classes and only showed up for the final. She layed into me hardcore! Probably not the best decision by me! I had to keep it though, or I wouldn't have been considered a full-time student.

I had a number of courses at ISU taught by completely inept, utterly incomprehensible foreign-born profs.

Yeah...me too.But even though I participated in football and the boxing club...I still managed to graduate in 5 years.
This was before the internet where we could get online and cry about it and try to find an easy way out.

chem e classes are a lot harder than bio classes, maybe thats why...

when i was a chemistry major it was a breeze, and its only been the first week and i'm swamped with chem e's workload.

I take my hat off to all the engineers, I see why it is considered the hardest undergraduate majors to get.

Had a trig professor exactly like this... I wonder if it's the same woman. Worst class ever. I skipped so many classes of hers because I learned more from the textbook than I did from her in lecture.

That's kind of amazing. That they actually got rid of him that is. I had a comp sci teacher that not only couldn't speak english, but spoke to the board the entire lecture. At one point me and a buddy were jamming out and clearly not paying attention. We looked to the end of our row to see the dean staring us down. The kicker was I just received our newsletter yeah she got tenure.

At a school like ISU profs are hired to research. If they can actually teach worth a crap it is just an added bonus. It is what it is and there is nothing you can do to change it. If the guy doing the latest and greatest cutting edge research can barely speak a word of English, he's getting the job because it brings the $$$ to the school. If it is a huge problem for you, you need to find a small teaching college that doesn't have the research thing going like ISU.
