Cats: The Movie

Some of the Twitter reactions to this movie are beyond hilarious.

"Both a horror and an endurance test"

"Watching CATS is like stumbling upon an unholy and heretofore unknown genre of porn. Every time these horny fur demons tongue a milk bowl and start moaning I was certain the FBI would raid the theater"

What really amazes me is that Idris Elba actually allowed himself to be in this movie.

Need gift idea: A night out in Des Moines area

Hello fanatics, I looked through 13 pages of old off topic threads and couldn't find my answer so here goes.

I want to give a Christmas gift to sister and BIL (early 30s, two kids under 4). They don't get out much recently but they live near Ankeny. I'm thinking a gift card to a restaurant/brewery that was within walking distance of some entertainment.

What does Des Moines/Ankeny/Ames area offer for quality breweries, restaurants, shows etc? They've probably been to several of the usual stops and they're not much for the Court Ave college bars.

Sorry I don't have a lot of specifics, but that might help keep options open. For his 30th bday we took a group to the Iowa Taproom and he loved it. Great beer/food, but that was all we did. I don't remember what's near there for entertainment so I was hoping for some suggestions.

Thanks!

2019 Albums of the Year

My 2019 Albums of the Year. Always love this thread. Have at it, folks.

10. Whiskey Myers S/T. A huge step forward for these guys. Previously I had thought of them as a fun, but fairly shallow Southern rock revivalist group. The songwriting hits greater depths here, especially the stellar "Rolling Stone". They still rock hard as hell, too. Especially "Bury My Bones" which features a guitar solo straight of Jason Isbell-era Drive-By Truckers.

9. Flatland Cavalry Homeland Insecurity. The heir apparent to the Turnpike Troubadours, Flatland Cavalry's second full album showed a huge leap forward. Cleto Cordero is rounding into a hell of a songwriter in his own right, and the band is tight as hell. They tread lighter ground than their obvious aforementioned influence, and occupy a more sensitive vein, which ultimately render it something slightly less to my ears. "My heart was beatin' like a bully on the smallest in our class" is one of my favorite lyrics of the year.

8. The Hold Steady Thrashing Thru the Passion. Terrible title, great album. Not much to say here, other than THS is back. Clearly influenced and inspired by Craig Finn's solo work, the band is having more fun than they have in years. Twin guitars, Franz Nicolai's stellar keys, Finn being Finn. The coda to "Blackout Sam" is something else.

7. Chris Knight Almost Daylight. Chris Knight is back after the better part of the decade, and it's worth the weight. Nothing really new here, just his update on the state of the world as he sees it in 2019. "Send It on Down" with Leann Womack and "Go On" are highlights here.

6. Jenny Lewis On The Line. Merging Rumours-era Mac and classic 80's Petty, Lewis makes the best record of her career. The subject matter dives straight into some of her more well known personal struggles as a former child star. "Wasted Youth" is probably my favorite here, but the entire album is a home run exercise in resurrecting the aforementioned sounds, and making it seem completely fresh.

5. Mike & The Moonpies Cheap Silver & Solid Country Gold. This is probably the coolest sounding record I heard all year. They take their cosmic honky tonk to Abbey Road, drench it in wild string arrangements, and the results are incredible. The only reason this doesn't rate higher is a handful of forgettable songs on a short (8 songs) record that features a cover (Gary P. Nunn's "London Homesick Blues"). But where this lands, holy **** it lands. "Danger" is my song of the year, and the coda here is absolutely sublime. These guys are onto something big.

4. Tyler Childers. Country Squire. A smaller affair than his 2017 debut, this one pushes the raw, lean bluegrass/country of his first record into funkier, more cosmic territory. Split between intense character studies (Creeker; Matthew) and ruminations on love (All Your'n; House Fire), his ascendance through the country/Americana/whatever world seems academic at this point.

3. Sturgill Simpson Sound & Fury. Strip away all the ********, and hype, and what you have is a staggering, bad ass, rock and roll record. In an era where that is becoming an increasingly rare thing, it deserves to be celebrated. Fastest Horse in Town is the pinnacle of this guitar and synth driven shredfest. "Make Art, Not Friends" is the danceable centerpiece manifesto.

2. The Yawpers Human Question. One of the most exciting rock bands going continues to push the envelope. From snarling punk (Child of Mercy), blistering funk rock (Earn Your Heaven), soul (Carry Me), and Westerberg-ian anthems (Can't Wait), Nate Cook and Jesse Parmet continue to prove that rock and roll still rocks.

1. Todd Snider Cash Cabin Sessions Vol. 3. Possibly the best songwriter going today. This is typically brilliant Snider fare, veering between his biting, sarcastic tear downs of modern day America (The Blues on Banjo; Talking Reality Television Blues) and gut wrenchingly personal introspection in the fallout of his divorce (Like A Force of Nature; Watering Flowers in the Rain). "Watering Flowers in the Rain" is the most moving song I've heard from anyone in a long time.

Insider Information Weekly Mailbag 12-18-2019
Presented by Great Value brand toilet paper. Because sometimes a pine cone will do a better job.

@CoKane asks: IDK if I'm too early or too late or what is going on anymore but I'm gonna ask while Im here. Who do you think is the correct choice for Cyclone of the Decade(both coaches and players eligible)?
Pants:
Georges Niang, and honestly, I don’t know if anyone else is even close? I know we’ve had some FANTASTIC national champions in cross country, but it’s just not visible enough of a sport, in my opinion.
GTO: In order: Georges Niang, Allen Lazard, Jamie Pollard, Matt Campbell. However, for being representative of what it means to be a Cyclone forever, I would go with Georges and Allen.

@demoncore1031 asks: How many times will Ian Book be sacked by Will McDonald?
Pants:
1, but he’ll get held a dozen times.
GTO: Agree with Pants here. He might get 1 or maybe 2 before the refs start protecting their blueblood and allow them to cheat/hold the rest of the game. Honestly, has been the story all year for McDonald, as no offensive linemen can match his speed. I would like for CMC to get into the ref’s ears so that they start calling those obvious holds.

@Cyforce with a lineup question: Any chance one of the incoming QBs gain enough of Campbell's trust that we could see Re-al line up in the slot on occasion? M seems to be the one position next season we won't have a game changer unless Milton moves back inside.
Pants:
Milton will move back inside, and Re-al will transfer before he changes position.
GTO: I could see Re-Al getting some of the touches Nwangwu gets today before I see him at wide receiver. Either way, I have a feeling he may transfer next year if Purdy comes back for his senior year. Just a feeling.

@ImJustKCClone trying to doxx a Hok troll: Instate rivals has a newly minted (as of 12/15) "dislike fairy" named PeacefulRival. Whose alt is it?
@CloneLawman also adds: Further, please give us a complete psychological profile for the Peaceful Idiot. Thank you.
GTO:
I’ve mostly avoided the ISR threads since the loss. The few times I’ve gone in there it has been unbearable. God bless @CyTwins for the work he puts in there day after day. I have no clue who PeacefulRival may be, but the psych profile is pretty standard for most Hoks: peaked in high school, lives in parent’s basement, has multiple Hawkeye tattoos, can’t hold a job, sexually inadequate, and ties up all their home’s internet bandwidth by being on CF all day arguing with CyTwins.
Pants: I honestly haven’t posted in the rivals board since our loss last week. You people that can visit that place after a loss to them are braver than the troops.

@Cyched strikes again: Why do 'fat chance' and 'slim chance' mean the same thing?
Pants:
Slim chance is a literal meaning whereas Fat chance is used as an ironic or sarcastic meaning.
GTO: Why are you body shaming fat chance? What’s next? Will you buy fat chance a Peloton for Christmas and force him to keep a video log of his year-long journey?

@BCClone trying to decide on what to add to the Costco shopping list: What brand of toilet paper is the best?
GTO:
Charmin is my favorite, but I’ve always been bothered by the butt-wiping bears. The worst one is the commercial where the bear has pieces of toilet paper stuck to his butt. I really don’t need to visualize a bear wiping his ass everytime I think of your brand.
Pants: Angel Soft is a surprisingly soft, yet affordable brand.

@BCClone asks: Is it ok to tell people who you don’t know well that what they said is pretty darn dumb(in some sort or other)? Or even telling them that they ate one of the dumber people you know? I live in a town full of stupid people and it gets annoying after awhile. I’m talking in person, not on a message board.
Pants:
I think I had a stroke while reading this. Do they become more dumb by eating a dumb person? I’m typically a pretty blunt person, and have no qualms with telling someone to their face that what they’re saying is stupid. The way to do it is to frame what they say or do as stupid, and not just calling they straight up stupid.
GTO: Some tribes believed that you gained strength by absorbing the life force of animals/people you ate (also depicted in the criminally underrated movie Ravenous). In this case, it would make sense that eating someone dumb would make that person even dumber. But I digress. If you need to tell someone they’re dumb, the best way is to mock them by exagerating their dumb behavior right to their face.
Pants: So like…..in kind of a Highlander sort of way?

[HELP] Plumbing Issues

Hey guys,

I recently bought a new house and I'm having a tough time with the plumbing in my laundry room. I've already snaked a few pipes with my handheld snake, but there is still a clog in the main drain that I just cant get to.

Does anyone know how to do this and would be willing to help me out. I'm willing to pay.

I have a video of the issue if that will help.

Let me know.

Wednesday OT - The Worst Is Not

I was just reading that Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is the #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, 25 years after it was released (LINK). Which, in turn, made me think about how truly dreadful the song is and how people collectively have awful taste.

What is your opinion for the absolute worst Christmas/holiday song? Extra points for posting a link. I think my actual vote may be "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" by John Lennon. "Let's stop all the fight" may be the worst lyrics he's ever written (and I'm not a huge fan of his solo stuff, especially "Imagine"). Please prove me wrong:
