Weird Amazon thing

I was wondering if anyone else has seen this scam and what exactly they trying to get at.

A few weeks ago I had a pending charge posted to my credit card from Amazon. I hadn't ordered anything so I put a track on it to email me as soon as it went final. It went final a few days later and suddenly an amazon box appears with my address and my first name (no last name). In that box, there are 3 things that are probably close to the value of the charge ($35). No receipt and it doesn't show up on my recent amazon order list. I dispute the charge with my credit card and try to figure out how to dispute it with amazon.

Today I get another pending amazon charge ($55). I fully figure a new box will show up sometime this week. I remove my credit card from my Amazon account, change my password (again), and have my credit card company send my a new card with a new number. I fully expect a new box to show up this week though.

So what's the scam here? Are they sending me $10 worth of stuff and pocketing the other $20, hoping I won't notice? Will they eventually stop sending me stuff at all and keep charging? Is there anything else I can do?

Black Friday-What are you buying?

I'm waiting to see what Home Depot has for tool chests. I'm looking for something like this or a little bit bigger.

I've done a little bit of research and it's probably going to come down to Husky or Milwaukee. I was surprised by two brands, the first being one by Harbor Freight, which ended up being just as nice as the Husky and Milwaukee. The second was Craftsman, which I expected to be great but seemed like junk.

What's on your list?

2019 Personal Goals

I don't believe in resolutions, but I thought a discussion of 2019 goals for everyone might be a worthwhile thread.

For me, I only have 2 this year:

1) Personal Health - eliminate pop from my diet altogether. I also have a goal to complete the Farrell's 10 week program.

2) Financial Health - Wife and I have gotten lax in our budget and spending habits. I've started using YNAB and have a goal to continue that on a weekly basis. Further, our goal is to cut back extra trips to Hy-Vee outside of our weekly grocery run.

What is everyone else working on in 2019?

Twister Sister Summary - near perfection

One word can describe tonight’s pounding of previously unbeaten TTech - THREE. It’s been some time since we’ve seen the ladies shoot from deep like they did tonight. The onslaught was too much for Tech to overcome although they surely tried in the first half. A 31-4 third quarter broke the raiders back and ISU did just enough in the 4th to become 1-0 in conference with a dominating win.

this was pure team ball. All five starters scored in double figures with Kristen Scott looking like herself again and Joens just missing another double-double with 19 and 9. A couple of key stats should jump out at you. First, the team had 23 assists for 37 made shots. That’s a really healthy assist number. Second, after being used to seeing the ladies get beat up and sent to the line, the ladies ended up only getting 7 opportunities while making 6. Finally, if you watched the game you saw some solid defense. It wasn’t always perfect, but it was aggressive and clearly frustrated Tech.

Another upside was seeing some extra players provide some relief during the game. A couple of negatives came from two key subs. Thurman was a mixed bag as she is a bit careless with the ball. She netted 6 of the team 17 turnovers. I also cringe watching Nez' bad habits limit her minutes. She continues to swipe at the ball on defense. If she can get that under control she will be a huge asset.

It was fun to see AD and Maggie make some strong contributions in this game. Their presence wasn’t just in scoring, but overall. Rae had perhaps her best game of the year as her total line and defense were everything one could hope for. In a nutshell, we saw what this team is capable of. As I had insinuated in another thread, Tech's preconference schedule strength was exposed. They def have a couple of nice players, but I’ll be surprised if they don’t struggle in conference play.

What's next? The sisters have a BIG Monday game against Texas. Texas was beaten at home by TCU tonight and is one of the more perplexing teams in the conference as they have a mix of amazing wins (over #1 Stanford) and some head scratcher losses (Hawaii and South Florida). Who knows which team shows up, but WE need to so the ladies can have some good old Hilton Magic cooking. See you there!

Wednesday OT - The Worst Is Not

I was just reading that Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is the #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, 25 years after it was released (LINK). Which, in turn, made me think about how truly dreadful the song is and how people collectively have awful taste.

What is your opinion for the absolute worst Christmas/holiday song? Extra points for posting a link. I think my actual vote may be "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" by John Lennon. "Let's stop all the fight" may be the worst lyrics he's ever written (and I'm not a huge fan of his solo stuff, especially "Imagine"). Please prove me wrong:

Preferred Tax Software

I have used Turbo Tax software for a number of years now and would be interested in what others are using and what you would recommend. My taxes are pretty straight forward, so the software vs a tax professional works well for my household. HR Block, Tax Slayer and TT seem to be the main players, but maybe other software might warrant consideration for 2019?

Peloton Ad

So this Peloton ad made quite the splash on social media. According to the article linked below, Peloton stock prices were down as much as 10% after the ad hit. Here is the ad:

I guess I think it's a dumb ad (who would take a year long video diary and play it back to their spouse about a damn stationary bike?), but I guess I don't find it offensive. Then again, I've been smart enough to stay away from workout equipment as a present for the wife.

Advice from those who have sold tix on Stubhub, Vivid, etc...

I have both bought and sold tickets on both Stubhub and Vivid so I understand how they work from both sides.

One thing I've always wondered about however.

I've always been afraid to list the same set of tickets for sale on more than one site at a time.

My concern: What happens if I get indications from both sites that the same set of tickets listed on each site have been requested by a buyer? I obviously can only approved and transfer tickets to one of the buyers. Do you just decline/not accept the other? If so, does that give you a "black mark" against you on that site the next time you try to list tickets for sale (since couldn't deliver the tickets on a past listed set of tickets)?

I think others do use multiple sites as I'm pretty sure I've found instances of the same tickets on more than one site in the past, so this must be doable? Just don't want to cause myself any headaches.

Can you guys help me make a difference this holiday season?

I launched this fundraiser on Twitter a little over a week ago with a goal to raise $10,000 by the end of the year. The Children's Cancer Connection is a local organization that helps local families. I've seen firsthand how great of a place this is and the impact that it makes on these families that are going through the worst time of their lives.

There are tens of thousands of you on this site and together, we have done so much good over the years.

We are just over $3,500 raised. The graph doesn't show it but a $1,000 anonymous donation was made. Without giving you the name, it was a high profile Iowa State sports figure. Pretty awesome. Can you guys give up a coffee or beer and help us get to 10 K?

Learning a new language

My wife works in HR in the ag industry and a good number of the employees she gets to work with speak both English and Spanish. She knows the basics and enough to know some of the not so work friendly words.

I got to thinking that it really would be good for her to become as fluent as possible. She has expressed this before as well. I also would love to be able to have basic conversations with neighbors in their native language for fun.

So how difficult is it to learn a new language when you’re in your 30’s?
