For the last few years I've been going out on the first day of the year and figuring out my net worth. I do this to see how it compares to the year before and also to see what areas I need to work on.

To figure out your net worth, add up the current value of all of your assets, then add up the current amount of all of your liabilities. Subtract your total liabilities from your total assets. The amount you end up with is your net worth. Assets can include cash, checking accounts, certificates of deposit (CDs), mutual funds, stocks, bonds, IRAs, 401(k) plans, automobiles, and real estate. Liabilities can include debt from credit cards, student loans, mortgages, home equity loans, 401(k) loans, and car loans.

So for example, if you only own a house and have a $300,000 loan but it's worth $320,000 than you have a $20,000 net worth.

How Important is Winning the Big 12 Tourney to You?

I've had a lot of great memories over the years when the Cyclones have won the Big 12 Tournament. But I wonder if their success in the conference tournament is at the detriment of their performance in the NCAAs. They expend a lot of energy winning three games in three days against very high quality conference competition, then have to turn around and travel to the opening round of the NCAA tourney.

If you had a choice - which would your prefer? A Big 12 Tourney title, or a final four appearance?

Past Big 12 Tournament Championships vs NCAA results

2000 - lost to Michigan State Elite 8 as a 2 seed vs 1 seed
2014 - lost to UConn Sweet 16 as a 3 seed vs 7 seed
2015 - lost to UAB 1st round as a 3 seed vs 15 seed
2017 - lost to Purdue 2nd round as a 5 seed vs 4 seed
2019 - lost to Ohio St. 1st round as a 6 seed vs 11 seed
2024 - lost to Illinois Sweet 16 as a 2 seed vs 3 seed

Analysis of remaining games.

I looked at the remaining games for the top 5 teams and their opponents total records and record for relevant home/away games. Here's the outcome:

Current leaders:
Houston Cougars 11–2
Arizona Wildcats 10–2
Iowa State Cyclones 10–3
Kansas Jayhawks 9–3
Texas Tech Red Raiders 9–4

Remaining schedule difficulty (hardest to easiest):

Arizona
Iowa State
Kansas
Texas Tech
Houston


Houston already leads AND has the easiest remaining schedule. They control the league and are the clear favorite to win the conference.

Arizona has the toughest closing stretch and most likely team to drop a couple games.

Iowa State has the second toughest finish. Unless Houston slips, our ceiling is 2nd. Winning it all is somewhat out of our hands now.

Texas Tech and Kansas hold steady.

Projected finish (schedule-adjusted):

Houston (~14–4)
Arizona (~12–5)
Iowa State (~12–6)
Texas Tech (~12–7)
Kansas (~11–6)

Our most likely result is 3rd.

Ticket to BYU game in Provo

My wife got a concert ticket in her company’s suite on Saturday night. Thus she is ditching me. My kids also are going to be at a birthday party that night.

I’m going to the Iowa State-BYU game, even if it means going solo as these are my two favorite teams.

Before I find someone else or list the ticket for sale, I thought I’d offer it to someone on this board. So if you will be in the area and need a ticket let me know.

There are two catches. You would have to sit by me and you would have to buy a cougartail donut. Plus the seats are pretty high up. But as they say … don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, right?

I’ll give it a couple days and then either ask around among the people I know here or list for sale.

If you would have told me Jeff/Milan/Tamin only score 29 I would say we got curb stomped. Pleta/Heise/Bateman go off for 25, and throw in Buchanan for 10- amazing by those guys!

Obviously this can’t work every game, but they were ready and blew their nut at Houston tonight. This was a great coaching effort by the staff as well.
Give them two or three days of just shooting free throws now- that is needed.
Only three turnovers against a crazy good defense.
I hope we can get the big three to be firing and keep the others playing at a high level and who knows…
