The following is a press release from Iowa State Athletics
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State 157-pounder Cody Chittum has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. It marks the first Big 12 weekly honor of Chittum’s career and the third by a Cyclone this season.
Chittum went 2-0 against a pair of top-20 opponents from South Dakota State and Northern Iowa last weekend, including a win over UNI’s No. 5 Ryder Downey.
Ranked No. 11 nationally by InterMat, Chittum upended Downey on Sunday in a rematch of last year’s 157-pound Big 12 title match. Chittum earned the only takedown of the match in the third period en route to a 4-2 decision over Downey, avenging two losses to the Panther from last season.
On Friday, Chittum prevailed over SDSU’s No. 19 Cobe Siebrecht in a pivotal match in ISU’s dual victory over the Jackrabbits. The takedowns finished 2-1 in Chittum’s favor, but the review-filled match was decided only by 1:20 of riding time which lifted the Cyclone over Siebrecht, 9-8.
The Cleveland, Tennessee native is now 15-2 on the season and has won 12 of his last 13 matches. His last three wins have all come against top-20 opponents.
No. 12 Iowa State closes its regular season Saturday at No. 25 Missouri. That dual will start at noon on UCF Fight Pass.
