Recruiting Roundup: March 31, 2018

THE LATEST:

*** The Cyclones picked up a commitment from cornerback Joseph Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) on Thursday.  Thompson chose Iowa State over other top schools of Illinois, Northern Illinois, and Toledo.  He is rated as the No. 94 CB and No. 947 overall player in the 2019 class.  Now with seven commits, ISU sits between TCU and Alabama with the 13th rated class.  If the pace continues, this could be the highest rated class since the start of the Internet rankings with a projected team finish in the low 40’s.

*** Defensive tackle Isaiah Gibson has high interest in the Cyclones, as they join other top teams of Kentucky, Minnesota, West Virginia and Ohio State.  Gibson holds offers from all but Ohio State and has nine total Power 5 offers.  The Springfield, Ohio native took a visit to Ames with teammates Moses Douglass and Mike Brown-Stephens this past Friday, before heading to Minnesota on Saturday.  He will graduate and enroll early at the school he chooses.

*** Another new top target with mutual interest is highly coveted JUCO linebacker, Lakia Henry.  Iowa State, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M are the leaders for the Dodge City C.C. prospect, who also holds offers from Arizona State, Kansas State, Kentucky, Mizzou, Nebraska, South Carolina and Syracuse.  Henry is originally from Vidalia, Georgia, and is rated as the No. 2 JUCO recruit by 247.

2019 OFFERS:

*** Cornerback Jarrad Baker Jr. (Melbourne, Fla.) received an offer Monday.  Baker holds 19 D1 offers, including those from Boston College, Duke, Kentucky, Missouri, Syracuse, Tennessee and Virginia.

*** The Cyclones blessed Corien Azema (Houston, Texas) on Tuesday.  Azema holds major offers from Duke, Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mizzou, Nebraska, Northwestern, Utah and Vanderbilt.

*** Iowa State handed out an offer to defensive end Jason Gold Jr. (League City, Texas) on Wednesday.   Gold holds P5 offers from Boston College, Kansas State, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, TCU and Virginia Tech.

*** Ellsworth Community College safety Naeem Smith (Iowa City, Iowa) was offered a preferred walk-on opportunity this past Saturday.  Smith plays both safety positions, standing at 5’10” 195lbs.  I haven’t been able to confirm if Smith is a 2018 or 2019 target.

2020 OFFERS:

*** Offensive tackle Turner Corcoran (Lawrence, Kan.) became the first 2020 offer of the week last Saturday on his visit to Ames.  He also holds an offer from Kansas State and is receiving interest from hometown Kansas.

*** ISU blessed Andre Seldon Jr. (Belleville, Mich.) Tuesday, competing with offers from Kentucky, Toledo and Central Michigan.

*** Iowa State and Cincinnati offered OT Tyler Miller (Jefferson, Iowa) on Thursday.  Miller is already 6’9” and 273lbs.

VISITORS:

*** Linebacker Jestin Jacobs (Clayton, Ohio) took a trip to Ames on Monday.  Jacobs is rated as the No. 43 OLB in the class and holds 14 power conference offers.

*** Safety Justin Clark (Oswego, Ill.) made his second visit on Wednesday.  Iowa State holds both of his crystal ball predictions on 247 Sports.  Clark holds offers from Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami (OH), Northern Illinois and Toledo.

*** Offensive guard Marquise Simmons (St. Louis, Mo.) is on a return visit this weekend.  Iowa State became his first offer back in November.  He now has an offer from Texas State and interest from Purdue.

*** Offensive tackle Danielson Ike (Kansas City, Mo.) is making his second visit since his January 24th offer.  Rated as the No. 21 OT in the class, Ike holds offers from Louisville, Nebraska, Purdue, and Kansas.

*** Defensive end Jason Bargy (Momence, Ill.) is visiting this weekend.  Bargy, rated as the No. 7 WDE and No. 149 overall recruit in the 2019 class, holds offers from Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Purdue and Wisconsin.  This is his third visit, attending Junior Day on Feb. 24th and also visiting last June.

*** Cornerback Derrick “D.J.” Miller (St. Louis, Mo.) visited Ames on Friday and is now in Iowa City on Saturday.  The Hawkeyes currently hold both crystal ball predictions for Miller.  The Cyclones extended their offer last May and Miller first visited ISU in January.

*** Linebacker Nick Henrich will make his third visit on Monday.  Iowa State, Iowa, Notre Dame and Minnesota are thought to be the top schools for Henrich.  The No. 10 rated ILB has racked up 16 power 5 offers, with the Cyclone offer coming last April.
