Notebook: Highly touted TE likes Iowa State, other nuggets

Iowa State has now received two unofficial visits from Gaelin Elmore, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound tight end out of Somerset, Wisc.

Elmore attended Iowa State’s junior/senior prospect camp last Sunday. Then after visiting Nebraska on Monday, he returned to Ames on Tuesday to chat with members of the Cyclone coaching staff.

“The staff is very genuine,” Elmore said. “They want to win and you can tell that. When I went there the first time, I knew I wanted to go back and take a serious look.”

Elmore, a Wisconsin prospect, is being looked at and has a handful of offers from numerous Big Ten schools including: Nebraska, Michigan State, Minnesota, Indiana and Wisconsin. Of course Iowa State has offered as well.

“I am definitely interested in their offense for a tight end like me,” Elmore said. “It really, really intrigues me. It definitely makes me give Iowa State a harder look. I just like their passing game and the pace.”

Elmore referred to himself as a “positional tight end,” meaning that he can put his hand on the ground to block while also possessing the ability to go out wide and be a part of the passing game too.

Elmore also has his eye on Iowa State’s impressive recruiting class considering it is only early June.

“They’ve put together a good recruiting class in my grade with Allen Lazard being the centerpiece,” Elmore said. “I’ve gotten to know all of those guys. I’ve talked to them a lot. They will be in the mix. I have a hard decision ahead of me and Iowa State is one of the schools I am looking at.”

Elmore’s plan is to go on more unofficial visits this summer and then to narrow his list down to three or five before the fall.

“I feel like the last minute deal is for drama queens and unnecessary,” Elmore said. “I’ll make a decision sometime in the fall.”

Elmore plans to camp at Ohio State next week. He’ll also take unofficial visits to Michigan State and Indiana.
