This is laughable. They should shut down this bs site. :)

Know you're joking but mathematical models don't converge early. There's a reason advanced stats work best in a sport like baseball where there are hundreds of thousands of individual interactions.

You're right...I was joking. Being trained as an engineer, I actually like this kind of stuff. GIGO...garbage in, garbage out.

You'll have to ask the creator for the formulas. All I know is, for PD3 to be at 17th is 'laughable'.

Dude...I enjoy your posts and watching your son wrestle but how can you claim you "get it" in one post then go off like this in your next two? Andegre provides an excellent service for wrestling fans and treating him this way is not very cool. It was explained to you why it is what it is. And only March matters, anyway. Chill.

"get it"? What are you referring to? "Go off"??? Hey, I'm very sorry if I offended you and/or Andegre. Also, I don't know who Andegre is and I didn't know that he created this "excellent service". With that being said, perhaps you and Andegre might try to learn something from this. Perhaps his statistical methodology could use some tweaking. Perhaps he needs more data input. I don't know. But I do know this...when I see PD3 at 17th...THERE ARE FLAWS IN THE MATH.

Its math. I don't always agree with Andre's rankings but they're consistent and understandable and besides, they're just a fun side project for what is mostly a site that exists to fill the void in being able to find results once the NWCA Scorebook went away.

I guess you don't get it, either.
Please, fill me in, because I don't get it either.

You did get 1 thing right in this thread though, it needs more data.

One of the reasons he's ranked #17 right now is because of the weight change. He finished last season at #6 at 197. Since moving down, the 184 class is MUCH deeper, therefore his ELO rating (that math part) isn't as high as the other guys at 184.

Here's that math if you want to look into it and make it better: ELO

I'm not sure how much Andegre's models take previous years into account, but even then Downey didn't wrestle much last year and thus has a statistically small sample size. Given that, it's not surprising he'd start out low. This is not a 'where do we think they'll finish ranking'. this is purely mathematical based. Get some matches under his belt and he'll shoot right up there.

I for one, love your site Andegre. Keep up the good work.

The terrible rankings are WINs, anyway. Because they're serious about them and presumably take time to make them rather than just using a well understood algorithm that sometimes gives bad results due to small sample sizes and high variability.

I mean, they had Tanner Weatherman ranked in the preseason this year.

For starters, you might want to increase your accuracy. Last year, he finished 5th, not 6th. So, he would be ranked 3rd at 197, but 17th at 184? I have nothing more to say. I hope everyone enjoys the season. Good work, Andegre...with a little tweaking, it could be great work. Thanks
for all the effort.

p.s. If he beats Dudley this weekend (assuming Manning sends him out against Downey :)), where will your statistical methodology then place him?

You guys wouldn't have lasted very long in engineering school. You must place 'weight' on a 197 lbers wins (pins) against Haught, etc. He just beat Rotert. It's known as 'weighted' data.

Thank you. I will review the math, and, if I can in any way help to improve your website, I will. I congratulate you on your effort and your passion for the sport. I probably could not have created what you have thus far. If I offended you in any way, please accept my sincere apologies. PD2.

Rankings are inherently flawed. And they don't really matter at the end of the day.

Also, I suggest trying decaff.

Jesus man, relax. We're all rooting for your boy.
