I'm all in on Cyclone sports, Reiman Gardens, and Iowa State University. I just joined premium on Cyclone Fanatic and donated to We Will. I feel great about it.

When I retire, I want to be able to attend as many games as I can, and then walk around that beautiful Iowa State campus and Reiman Gardens after the game (or even before). I want all my kids to attend ISU. If you feel this way, please donate what you can.

Even if we put all our NIL towards football, best case scenario we win a B12 championship and maybe squeak out a 1st round win in the playoffs before getting our teeth kicked in by one of the Powerhouses.

In basketball, there's a legitimate chance to compete for a national title. This year's team is proof, we were a top team in the country at full strength.

I would be in favor of going all in on bball, although I'm aware its not practical. I think this is what the OP was getting at. Interesting question

Your general premise is understandable but your analogies are way off base. I guarantee there are more anti-NIL people that pay attention to this website than you think.
Theres also a lot of people who are anti NIL but understand it's the nature of the beast right now and hope there are adjustments and regulations soon. But they also aren't just incessantly negative about it over and over and over.

To switch all NIL to basketball for a couple years to compete for the national title? I’m getting to the point where it’s would rather compete for a national title in basketball than competing more for stuff in n football.

I just don’t think we will ever compete for anything in football.

You’ll get a ton of crap for this but I agree 100%.

We’ll see how the next few years shake out but I don’t think it’s possible for Iowa State to be good at both in this landscape with our donor base. But we’ll see what happens with the lawsuits in the next few years.

Ratio seems to say it all.

This really isn’t true. Most college athletics revenues are dependent on being in a conference with good football programs that provide a good media deals as much as it is being good yourself.

Second, it’s estimated that the average combined media deals are about 75-80% for football and 20-25% MBB. In the Big 12 that might’ve skewed a little more toward basketball.

So of course ISU would lose some revenue by sucking at football, but it’s simply not true that ISUs AD revenue would bottom out.

Right now ISU is able to be competitive to good in both sports, so they are playing it right. The question becomes if you start falling too far behind in NIL into both and are mediocre in both.

Massive changes are likely in 2032 that should make basketball have higher valuations. At least for the top brands and conferences

It’s not coincidental the CFP TV deal was lined up to expire at the same time as the NCAA Tournament. And why TJ and Campbell’s contracts expire then

Look for the P2 to wrangle control of the CBB postseason like they did the CFP. It probably won’t change too much in format, but most of the $1-$2 billion/year will go to the conferences with the biggest TV draws.

Some speculate regular season rights of the conferences that control the tournament could be coupled to postseason rights like the NBA, thereby making more for the conferences

In the end, we’re going to have to turn straw into gold regardless. But at least with basketball the absolute value of investment is lower.

When the P2 and top basketball-only start to change hierarchy in basketball, some Big 12 and ACC schools will have to decide whether trying to be good in football is worth it.

Hopefully the non-revenue goes back to early last century in which they’re competing locally. Cost centers shouldn’t be flying across the country

yep, there is so much of our fan base that doesn't give to our NIL. I think they don't understand. I mentioned in another thread I'm in a group chat with 5 other Cyclone fans. I implored them to donate to the collective. Here is the response to one of the guys in the chat. "I don't mind giving money via buying tickets, beer at a game, and even parking. But somehow raising money to expressly pay a 19 year old to play for us..just seems wierd to me."

I explained to him if we want great players to come here we have to pay, we may not like the way college athletics is going, but reality we need to pay. Anyway, I don't think a lot of our fans understand. If they are not on Cyclone Fanatic how would they know the situation. I have other Cyclone fans at my work, they have no idea about the collecitive or how it works. I will hit them up too.
Some of us live in the real world and pay bills. Even if I did have extra money I'd use it on vacations or even something like Chiefs season tickets. I'm not giving it to 18-19 year old kids to watch mediocre sports. Cause that's what college ball is now. I don't care enough.

I can see the SEC and B10 trying to wrestle control of the BB tournament to stack it in their favor money wise, but it's going to be a lot harder than football. In basketball the playing field is more evenly spread, the ACC and B12 teams do not take a back seat to the teams from the SEC and B10. You also have the Big East which as done very well in the tournament. There are as many "name" teams in the other three conferences to make sure that the money split will be a heck of a lot more even.

I am not as much anti NIL as I am anti every year every single player enters the portal. I think NIL is fine if they figure out a way to end the portal madness. Two year contracts for NIL. Maybe if it's a big NIL package you give it a three year contract. Just like a coach. If you portal, you have to pay fines for leaving. It just has to be figure out. If the NCAA would institute this it could work. Schools won't because it would put them at a disadvantage against other schools.

But yet we have very few players enter the portal.

Not really true. We have 5 of 12 players enter this season. 3 of 12 enter last season and 3 of 12 the season before that in basketball. That is quite a few players.

I’m thinking football which is where you want to move resources

OMG please don't act like I was being literal to win a debate. Obviously not every single player. Everyone knows what I meant.
I'm not "acting" like anything. You made a post and I pointed out a part of it that isn't true.
I think there's A LOT of athletes at ISU who are most likely paid below market value. There's a lot of (rightfully so) negativity but it's the nature of the beast at this moment and maybe we all need to take a deep breath and appreciate some of the athletes that stick around Iowa State for less. Not many working class people would do that.

Wishful thinking

The SEC and BIG have better viewership in basketball. But that’s the least of our problems

The P2 can lean on football to get concessions from the Big 12 and ACC, assuming either exists.

And if the Big 12 and ACC take a stand, the P2 can poach the top basketball brands and others. The new CBB deal is likely approaching $2 billion/year, so adding a UNC, KU, and Duke is easy to justify if it results in 15% more base pay from the $2 billion, or more if CBB postseason is coupled to regular season

The Big East and top basketball-only are easily swayed to the P2 side with some partnership. They don’t have football to protect. Which is why the Big 12 was so shortsighted in not backing Yormark in marginalizing the Big East/add basketball. It will only get more expensive to add basketball

At that point the P2 are also nearly done having the rest of the NCAA pick up the vast majority of the House liabilities. A big mistake not to push for fundamental change when most of those liabilities would follow P2 (if separation)

What’s left of the Big 12 and ACC will be included, just as a junior partner like in the CFP

Just how much larger can the B10 and SEC get and still be considered a conference. We already have B10 schools complaining about travel and how much time their kids are away from school. I saw where the UCLA coach was asked and he stated that they have already made 4 trips into the eastern time zone, all were two games sets so they were not going back and forth as much, and they are going to add more?
I understand that money is ruling this, but its a lot easier for a football team to spend a week on the coast and play two games than bb teams doing it repeatedly throughout a season,
The only way this is going to work out travel wise if both conferences get up to 20 to 24 teams, and then split them into divisions to reduce travel. Basically setting up new conferences under the B10 and SEC. That may be the goal.

and that is completely understandable. But as a fan base, we can't expect ISU to put competitive teams out there if we incapable of playing the game. Coaches won't want to come or stay here either if we can't get them the support.

No! Unless you earn well over $100,000 a year and all your kids are already finished with college, you should support your school of choice through attendance and buying tickets, not NIL donations to college athletes who will likely earn more than you've ever made.

The average folks help more through metrics like butts in the seat and TV ratings. Some schools have billionaire donors, and it is simply impossible for schools without billionaire donors to keep up in the arms race.

I mean, sure, if you have expendable income that is currently being used for gambling on games or political donations, why not? However, if you're considering the price of coffee or eggs, chances are your money is better spent in your pocket.

Exactly. I'll buy a few tickets every year (along with some We Will Beer and Pizzas), but I'm not donating money to pay their salaries on top of that. Tickets/concessions/merchandise/parking/TV revenue are supposed to cover all of that. The NCAA/Schools needs to pay athletes, not the fans. This pisses me off to be honest.
