I assassinated LE's character ?#?@

I argue he did a pretty good job of that all on his own.

Without booze? You don't think alcoholism had something to do with his behavior?

You don't think with the hundreds of thousands of dollars that we invested in Larry that maybe he should've gotten one public shot to get right and keep his job?

Still standing by for the quotes and photos...

Without the booze, LE hasn't even gotten to the NIT postseason. He's 1-4 in conf this season - what is it, his 5th? I really wish he didn't get fired from ISU after the Natty Lite incident; a couple more years and at least some of the remaining LE hold-outs could have seen him flame out like he's doing at So Miss. Maybe then they could finally let go.

And If you want good, public LE quotes, look up the Iowa State Daily from May 2003, quoting the ISU coed about LE's pick up line at Wallaby's.

The sad deal aout the LE era was that we had to fire the only coch in MBB or FB that had won a conf title , let alone two in a row. I understand the desire of those who would take him back. I voted no. The reason: I witnesed, personally, the man's immaturity on his personal life away from the basketball arena. I always felt that the internal pressure of the job was the cause of his lifestyle. Think about it, the road trips in a personal RV which was focused on a party atmosphere including extreme drinking, gambling and college age coed activities from a man at his age and position. Botom line: he was a great coach who forced his own demise through his own behavior. Bring him back? Let me put it this way, do you think the St. Louis Cardinals will get the fans and media to forgive Mark Maguire by bringinhg him back into baseball and eventually get him elected to the Hall of Fame-which is what it is all about? Point-Larry and Mark are best served by not getting back into the Big Time.

Good post, until you got to Mark McGuire. He cheated to win. Larry didn't. Larry may be a horrible human being, but he didn't cheat on the sports field.

Larry should not have been fired for what appeared in the Des Moines Register.

He should have been fired for what was not reported what he did after the Texas game 2001(oh and two other incidents I know about) - you know the night our B12 championship team lost by 30 points - the night that ultimately was the beginning of LE "Losing" the team and our program.

Larry Baby would go on to lose to 2nd-last place Baylor in the B12 tourney, then lose to Hampton in the first round of the Dance. Yeah, Larry, all those cyclone fans were patting you on the back saying "Keep doing what you're doing" as the team boarded a flight back to Ames, Larry crawls into his personal RV - remember he didn't "travel' with the team because of his neurosis about fear of flying? Did you ever wonder why LE didn't travel with the team, or was it more important to you that he's the only dude to win B12 championship team?

Too bad the pictures from that night can't be posted, but the Moderators want this site to friendly to the majority of adolescent kids who visit here.. plus we don't want to agitate the vasectomy ad sponsors. Maybe some folks would have their eyes opened and think twice about how they voted in this survey if they really knew what the DSM didn't report. That and it probably would have sparked an NCAA investigation since a couple NBA agents were footing the bill that night.

Or how about maybe we could repost what the Iowa State Daily quoted in May 2003 from a coed when LE approached her at a local bar.

Ask a majority of player's parents of their opinion how LE treated their kids. The reason LE couldn't recruit was because his reputation, not as slap-happy drunk, but as a jerk-face boar, was getting around the state of Iowa. I wonder what Shane Power really says in privacy; I'd really like to hear Jake Sullivan's dad's take. Or how about Omar Bynum's opinion? Kirk Heinrich's dad has an opinion - he's a basketball coach, maybe that would help folks here understand. Naw, LE was a popular - it was all Bruce's fault - at least that what LE would complain to anybody listening to his slured words at Wallabys.

PS: So Larry is 1-4 in a crappy conf this year; supposably "The Year" he finally makes his AD look like a genius for hiring him. Not post seasons - not even NIT, how long has it been now 5 or 6 years? I doubt the'll go to the NIT this year.
Gee, if he's so great with the X's & O's you'd think he'd be Nat Coach of the year again, but then again, he doesn't have T Floyd recruiting for him. We get a better coach from the Mac conf.

The only player LE appealed to was a washed-up, JUCO needing his last chance at an NBA shot, who was an academic liability; no wonder he needed a recruiter like Morgan.

Finally, we have a President at Iowa State, who is a decent man, and cares about athletics and how our student-athletes are treated. Check out my sig line - I continue to post Geoffroy's comments after he fired LE (and awarded $950K from the University just so LE wouldn't have to take the stand and admit his shortcomings as a human being). Don't just read it, meditate on it and ask yourself, what is really important to our basketball program.

+ flippin' 1, especially for the bolded part !!

Quite honestly, I doubt that it would really matter for some if the entirety of the sordid affair was made known. The whole reason that the situation got to where it did in the first place was because the collective ISU personna was drunk on success and turned a blind eye (particulalry those who could have done something to intervene) to what LE was doing. Winning was all that mattered, and given the results of this poll, that is apparently all that matters now.

So because LE won back to back titles and coached arguably the best team in Iowa State history, he doesn't get the credit because they weren't his players?

And ISU gave McDermott an extension because they were required to, not because they wanted to. Huge difference.

And conversely he gets a complete pass for the final 2 abortions of seasons we experienced with his incredible coaching/recruiting skill?

Fact of the matter - he caught lightening in a bottle and the planets lined up for a very brief moment in ISU history. LE is NOT an undiscovered Coach K or Roy Williams or Bill Self of Tubby Smith or ANY other coach with a long and stellar record of success. He got lucky and by extension, we as fans got lucky.

My point about Mark Maguire and LE was that they both were greatly admirered by their fan base and then basically forced their own exile by choices they and they alone made. LE by lifestyle choices and MM by denial of chemical enhancement. I do not think either will ever be able to overcome their past with the public. Right or wrong.

I voted no because nationally our institution would take a beating for doing this. And, I'd be surprised if he came up with another super-recruiter like Morgan again. We really had the setup back then, and I think with CS, WB, etc we would have been really good again. Anyways, I still think he's a really good coach but that ship has sailed, he's gone and we needn't bring him back.

Best coach we ever had. Back to back conference championships. Do you really think McDermott will ever have us in the upper half of the divison?

Yes, he did that with players recruited by another coach.

Really? The coach prior to LE was 123-109 in eight seasons. He had two winning conference seasons and 1 NIT appearance. Granted his last three seasons were losing (his last being 13-15). I certainly would not call that an utter disaster.

LE is 75-80 in his first five seasons, his last being 15-17. Exactly what has he improved over the previous coach?

ISU gave an extension to McDermott. Would you say everybody in ISU-land is happy with him?

So what? I'm fine with LE having a coaching job. I just don't understand the rationale for wanting him back at ISU.

Our guard court was LE recruits. Floyd did not recruit Hortan and Tinsley.

Be honest...Morgan recruited those players and there is no guarantee how long they would have lasted under LE. LE would NEVER have allowed Stinson to act like he did during games.

No, Morgan did not recruit Homan, that was LE. Homan was already here when Morgan took over. Besides, LE was the one that had to close on Curtis and Will. I remember Will talking about how cool it was LE drove all the way to Boston for the visit. He commited to LE on that visit. LE is the one that hired Morgan. His main responsibility was to locate and recruit talent for the head coach to close on. Morgan was good at getting in the door, LE was not. However, once the door was open, LE closed it. That is pretty much how it works at most programs. I mean if we went by the logic that Curtis and Will are Morgan recruits, then I guess Lute Olsen was a crappy recruiter at Arizona since his assistant coaches targeted the prospects and got the first steps out of the way for Lute. Or we could just say that Brackins is not a GMac recruit, he is JTs.

If you know so much bad stuff, then you would know about what Shane Power. You threw his name in there like his opinion really matters. It doesn't and you should know why or if you did, then his name would not be on the list.

Oooooooh, spooky stories...post some quotes or pictures before you try to assasinate someones character. LE shouldn't have been fired, period. He should've been given a chance (publically) to get his act together.

Larry was not fired for those pictures. Those pictures gave Geoffrey the excuse he needed to fire LE. I will agree with Go2guy that LE assasinated his own character.

I myself have two LE encounters that belong on his wall of shame. One happened in Ankeny following a Cyclone Club event. And judging from BVD's reaction that night I think we wanted to fire LE on the spot. And with the way LE was treating fellow ISU coaches that night I can't say I would have blamed him.

It is my opinion that most of the people who defend LE were probably students at the time of the Elite 8 run. That sure was a good time to be a Cyclone basketball fan!!! But, to those of us who had to deal with LE in a more "professional" setting, we tend not too think very highly of him...

Yep....and they put an asterisk by his "National COY" award, and his "Big 12 COY" award. If you read the fine print at the bottom, it says "Tim Floyd is responsible for recruiting most of the talent on this team, along with the help of Tom Miller(Rucker Park Super)". You are actually hilarious!

Just shows what good coaching will do (see what CPR did with CHiz's players!) Johnson couldn't find the floor under Floyd and Fizer was a fraction of the player LE got him to be.

LE wasn't coach K but then again we will never have a Coach K! I loved the drive and intensity the teams had with him - compare it to where we are now. Can you imagine what LE could/would do with guys like Colvin, Boozer, Brakins & DG.

You're right it will never happen, unfortunately, bringing him back, But I voted a big YES just for what the program felt like with him in charge!

haha....that is absolutely true. i'm sure LE really appreciates Shane being referred to as a moral compass for leaving the program, when in fact there were other "things" going on there.
