What are you trying to start a Hickory Park / Hickory House debate? I don't think CF could handle that.Waterloo has one of the best hole in the wall restaurants in a very suspect area.... The Hickory House. Outstanding ribs.

The hailstorm we had in Bloomfield 15 years ago is referred to be many as the Bloomfield recovery storm. We ended up getting a new roof, house resided and a new garage out of the storm. Many here in town did also, lot of new roofs and siding companies rolled into town and made a killing.A hail storm can turn a drab town into a good town. Like 2023. New siding, new roofs.
Denison used to be absolutely awful, last time I was through there it at least looked like they had cleaned up a lot of the store fronts along the highway.
Fort Dodge gets my vote. Played them in football and might’ve been the most racist team I ever played against based on their trash talk. They also didn’t appreciate me calling them “cousin boning hicks” which makes me think they’re not very tolerant of alternative view points.

I mean, I certainly don't question your memory. I just find it odd given that Fort Dodge is known for being a bit more diverse than most cities it's size in Iowa. Wouldn't dare make the case that there aren't racists here. There are, but generally the racism is aimed AT the Fort Dodge teams, at least in the recent years I've had kids in sports.Denison used to be absolutely awful, last time I was through there it at least looked like they had cleaned up a lot of the store fronts along the highway.

This was about 20 years ago, not sure if the demographics have changed. And racist ******** aren’t exclusive to any one town, we all have them. I just especially remember the black kids on our team being called the n word and the rest of us being called “n word lovers” in Fort Dodge.I mean, I certainly don't question your memory. Jcyclone, I must apologize in advance. This story might be a work of fiction. Regardless, it is potentially traumatizing to those of weak stomach.
The following is one version I saw:
‘
Early 1990’s: When I was a kid, I slept over at a buddy’s house for the first time.
The next morning we woke up and his mom made us cereal, the milk tasted hella sweet, even for my child taste buds. Something about it all seemed off. Just as my buddy finished his bowl of cereal, his mom came over and turned the bowl on its side to pour the leftover milk from the cereal bowl into a milk carton. The mom then did the same with hers. I felt my face turn red with shame and embarrassment and my stomach turn. Horrified and confused I asked “what is that? What are y’all doing?”
He turned to me and deada** said “that’s our cereal milk”
Turned out this sadistic f**k and his ENTIRE family poured all of the leftover milk from each bowl of cereal back into a separate milk carton, specifically for cereal. I drank this entire family’s backwash.
F**king CEREAL MILK. Used. Cereal. Milk. ‘

Electric Car Company? Whaaaat??There have been some real economic failures in WC since Electrolux closed. Electric car company, Fish farm, and at least another but I can't remember it right now.
I lived in Marshall County most of my life (5 years ago moved to Altoona) and could not agree more. Still work out of Marshalltown 2 days a week and remote 3.Lifelong Marshalltowner so biased but the city is fine.
Roundhouse just got an $8.5 mil reno in 2016 and built new $6 mil football/soccer/track that opened fall 2023. The YMCA is fantastic and hosts state swimming. The Vets Colliseum just had a $4 million renovation after derecho. All the youth sports leagues are well supported and both Y and Park and Rec host their own leagues in addition to sports complexes having leagues.
Traffic is awesome, if I'm more than 4 cars back at a stop light it must be after the fireworks on the 4th of July. Driving in Ames or Des Moines for me is stressful, had to go into the office in Urbandale a couple days two weeks ago and about died twice.
Big enough to have everything but a Target and lots of food options. Just got the new Menards a decade ago and have new KFC, TB and Caseys, and Kwik Star renovated their 3 locations in last 3 years. Also elite Mexican food which is my favorite, favorite 3 places I've had anywhere in El Portal, La Carretta and Zamora's.
Also the location is tough to beat, right in the middle of the 4 major universities. Hour to Drake, 35 to Ames, hour to UNI, 90 min to IC.
My opinion but this isn’t unique to Iowa, small towns everywhere are hurting. I actually think because of the agriculture in Iowa, small towns are doing better here than many parts of the country. This is an interesting subject. About 3 months ago I started a 2nd job doing insurance audits traveling the whole state of Iowa. The amount of $hitpiles in this state is incredible
Forgot the brand new Fareway in last year, new store is amazing.I lived in Marshall County most of my life (5 years ago moved to Altoona) and could not agree more. Still work out of Marshalltown 2 days a week and remote 3.
I do believe the Coliseum lost its roof in the toranado though not the derecho. Speaking of those two events, the town looks a lot different than a few years ago with many lost trees.
Lastly, Marshalltown has a top shelf bike shop in Black Tire Bike Company on Main St. Matt is great.
Fort Dodge is rough in many spots. Their saving grace is they have a Taco Tico.
Webster City is pretty bleak.
In Ottumwa, you will never see as many adult males riding BMX bikes and grandmas with bad tatoos as you do there. I agree the area around Indian Hills probably knocks them out of contention for worst city.
Keokuk is also really bleak. It is difficult to find the "nice" part of town there.
Clinton is a little tough but it is sort of like Ottumwa. It has a couple decent neighborhoods that would knock it out of contention.
The best part of Marshalltown is around their high school and the block or so around the Flying Elbow restaurant. The rest of town seems a little rough.
Davenport seems like it has really fallen off. Collapsing apartment complexes did nothing to help its perception either.
A couple other notes, Gary, Indiana is a crime ridden $hit box and easily the worst city in Indiana. I had a sales manager plan a sales meeting there at one of the casinos. We were specifically told by the casino staff not to walk outside.
Cairo, IL is possibly one of the saddest towns/cities in America. I spent a fair bit of time there while in college in the late 1990's. My boss had pretty simple instructions, get in and get out. Note, it is pronounced Kay-Roe, not Kie-Roe like the city in Egypt.
It was before the fish farm, the bodies were coming from one place the batteries another and then assemble them there. I think a couple of demo bodies might have made it to W.C. I don't believe it ever got into the hiring phase.Electric Car Company? Whaaaat??

This is happening all over America, as we have moved away from the rural communities and into more urban societies, those that still live in the rural areas see less money and struggle to move forward. This is an interesting subject.
