First off, let me say I would love to be winning now, as I believe every other clone fan out there would too, and I go into every game hoping to win and convincing myself in my head that we have a good shot whether we really do or not. But...
When GMac took this job he said, "If you want a quick fix, you've got the wrong guy." Very few people objected to that comment when he made it, but now a good number of people are acting like McDermott isn't getting it done because of FOUR GAMES in his SECOND SEASON with an injury depleted roster of youth.
I VERY rarely make excuses, and I hate doing it, but the facts are, Lucca Staiger and Wesley Johnson are absolutely crucial to the success of this year's team...for the Bradley game and the Minnesota game, we went up against two very physical, experienced teams, and we did it with a bunch of freshmen and guys that came in as walk-ons, but were forced to play because of injuries and bogus NCAA rulings...I very much wanted to beat Bradley and Minnesota too, but it's absolutely rediculous to meltdown and throw a fit because we lost those two close games, when we were countering McKenzie, Tollackson, and Coleman with guys like Petersen, Haluska, Boozer and Garrett. Seriously people...
This is NOT going to be a quick fix...it sure as heck does look good for the future though. But... Garrett, Brackins, and (hopefully) Staiger are going to take more than four games to figure out how to play Big 12 caliber basketball (especially defense), and I would hope people would realize that, as opposed to flipping out when we lose to a physical, senior led fundamental team...Add those three players, plus Wesley Johnson, and add muscle and knowledge of the game, and you should see some special things down the road........if you don't jump off the bandwagon first because you think we should be competing with Kansas for a title this season.

I think I figured out why this happening.

We haven't been good in football in 2 years and we haven't been good in men's basketball for 2 years. People are just dying for ISU to win. And when that isn't happening, it gets frustrating.

Based on splitting the #230 best basketball schedule according to Prophet Sagarin and having to play UNI, Drake, Purdue and Iowa, let's expect to win about six games in non conference and six in conference for twelve wins.

Now if we improve with Wes back and Lucca Freed and Jiri healed, let's expect a 18 win season and maybe NIT.

No margin for error.

losing sucks. We are losing a lot at every sport at Iowa State that I care about. It get's frustrating to see us constantly get beat.

Also The Cyclone Student section sucks compared to when I was younger. We used to just go nuts. Now they have cheers they do. Not real neat if ya ask me.

I should also note that when I say bright things down the road, I don't mean this season. I would hope people would realize that, but I guess a lot of people thought McDermott meant he would have everything clicking the way he wanted four games into his second season when he was saying not to expect a "quick fix". I also wouldn't put too much stock into schedule strength four games into the year. All we know at this point about our schedule strength is that we beat a couple cupcakes, and lost to a couple of senior dominated teams, with good fundamentals.

I was thinking about this last night after the game. It's just getting so frustrating to be a ISU fan right now. We are going on 3 years since we had a real winner to cheer for and for fanatics like me who spend several hours a day on this site and others obsessing over the Cyclones its easy get frustrated and to lose perspective. I'll say this, GMAC really needs to put a winner on the court next year. Year three is critical...and I still have all the confidence in the world in him to get it done.

Until then, people are going to come on message boards and vent...its normal and it doesn't make someone a bad fan...just passionate. We just need to stick together as a fan base and "help" some of our more frustrated bretheren get through these times cause if we play like that against UNI next week you might have to be talking me down off the ledge!

Go Cyclones!

This will really get the students going but hey, they're on break and won't even notice. But I agree, what happened to getting a little sauced and yelling at players/coaches and refs. Now they're concerned about which arm waving distracts the ft shooter more?

I dunno what would happen, actually. I was told that what I was doing went against said code, and that I should stop. Didn't really push it further... Now I'm curious though. Maybe they'll tell me I can't participate in the cheers?

CA "code of conduct"

Which part is against the "code"?

A. Getting a little sauced.
B. Yelling at players.
C. Yelling at coaches.
D. All of the above

No wonder Hilton Magic isn't the same...students are being controlled by the Cyclone Alley Police.

come on what do the students have to do with us being 2-2. They lossed on the road and once on Thanksgiving break. I would say that we lost those 2 games due to the lack of ability to rebound and also lets face it we don't have any good guards. I don't care what people say we don't have guards. Yes, Diante looks good at times and will pry be good next or the year after. Idk if GMAC has noticed but college basketball is all guard oriented, and that is something we don't have. Untill we have another Curtis and Will idk when we will return to the big dance!

You are right my friend...I canNOT remember the last time that I-State has been this bad in both football and basketball at the same time.

Usually ISU has been good in either football or basketball while the other sport struggled...I can flat tell you that this sucks mega and I hope that this is the last year that we have both f-ball & b-ball being this BAD!!!
