First off, let me say I would love to be winning now, as I believe every other clone fan out there would too, and I go into every game hoping to win and convincing myself in my head that we have a good shot whether we really do or not. But...
When GMac took this job he said, "If you want a quick fix, you've got the wrong guy." Very few people objected to that comment when he made it, but now a good number of people are acting like McDermott isn't getting it done because of FOUR GAMES in his SECOND SEASON with an injury depleted roster of youth.
I VERY rarely make excuses, and I hate doing it, but the facts are, Lucca Staiger and Wesley Johnson are absolutely crucial to the success of this year's team...for the Bradley game and the Minnesota game, we went up against two very physical, experienced teams, and we did it with a bunch of freshmen and guys that came in as walk-ons, but were forced to play because of injuries and bogus NCAA rulings...I very much wanted to beat Bradley and Minnesota too, but it's absolutely rediculous to meltdown and throw a fit because we lost those two close games, when we were countering McKenzie, Tollackson, and Coleman with guys like Petersen, Haluska, Boozer and Garrett. Seriously people...
This is NOT going to be a quick fix...it sure as heck does look good for the future though. But... Garrett, Brackins, and (hopefully) Staiger are going to take more than four games to figure out how to play Big 12 caliber basketball (especially defense), and I would hope people would realize that, as opposed to flipping out when we lose to a physical, senior led fundamental team...Add those three players, plus Wesley Johnson, and add muscle and knowledge of the game, and you should see some special things down the road........if you don't jump off the bandwagon first because you think we should be competing with Kansas for a title this season.
