The person who spoke to Blum was inaccurate. ISU started 5-0 and finished 6-5 in 1980.

ISU did finish 5-5-1 in 1981. Started 3-0-1 and 5-1-1. The guy was confusing the two seasons. Easy to do, since both had similar "big hope/deflation."

That 1981 season is one of the weirdest ones I've ever seen. Start 3-0 beating the teams you should, tie 5th ranked OU, lose to a very average WAC team in San Diego State, come back and beat number 8 Mizzou and Colorado to get to 5-1-1 and then turn around and lose to a KSU team that won 2 games and lost a home game to Drake.

I always have wondered if Coach Duncan could have put it together eventually.

It's bizarre how ISU in '80 and '81 lost to a conference foe that lost to Drake.

1980: Iowa State was Colorado's only win.
1981: KSU's other win: South Dakota.

My immediate answer would have been NEVER.
He knew his sights were much higher than Iowa State, and his main focus was to beat Iowa. Whatever happens after that was gravy. It was all about Donnie.
People complain about Walden - he was twice the man Duncan was - with severely less administrative support.
