Soccer Fan: Hey dude, do you like soccer?
Normal Human: Umm no, I like football and baseball.
Soccer Fan: You ******* piece of ****. You mindless ****. Why dont you like it. Its so much better than what you like. Why are you so uncultured!!!!! Its the number one sport in poor countries!!!!!! More people play it, its better. What the **** is wrong with you. I hope you die!!!!! Youll see, youll see, it's going to take over america and youre going to hell!!!!

I think this is more about the ****** people you hang out with than soccer.

I think it's funny that the first 4 comments were bashing soccer without even a thought of commenting on the actual article and then the complaints from soccer non-fans are that soccer fans 'shove it down your throat' and this whole thread was meant to start an argument. I think most people that hate soccer (not those that just don't like it, there is a big difference) do so because they hate what they think soccer represents (Not 'merica). I hear people call soccer fans hipsters or euro snobs or pansies or whatever all the time. I'm sure those fans exist but it's quite a strange generalization. Another common complaint is flopping (especially on here, holy god for people that hate soccer you guys spend a lot of time looking up soccer gifs). Nobody LIKES flopping. Fans don't talk about what a great actor a player is, but there is gamesmanship in every sport and a lot of great players do it. The less the better but that is mostly determined by the officiating. Lastly, the "It's boring because they just kick the ball around" argument. If you don't understand the game just say so and move on. I didn't like football at all until I came to ISU and saw a game live. The excitement of ISU football got my foot in the door and then as I started watching more and more I understood it better. Baseball is boring for many people because it looks a lot like guys playing catch most the time but baseball fans could tell you all about all the nuances going on that non-fans don't even notice. It's the same thing in all sports...

tl;dr: I don't really care if you don't like soccer but there is no point in making a big stink about just how much you don't like it and ripping on people that do.

Anyway, on to the article: The author makes a good point that some people here have commented on, basically that the environment at a good soccer game can be absolutely electric and it is even more exciting when you realize it is completely organic. Though, like he mentions, one observation at a pseudo-friendly between random (big name) teams in Miami may not be a great national barometer for soccer interest or fandom. It was a decent article, not overly deep, and his conclusion that soccer is a game for adults is a little silly but his reporting on the event was enjoyable and spot-on.

Top ten things I hate about soccer:
1-10: Soccer fans

Mostly this. Not all soccer fans but the extremist really do put a bad image on Joe Soccerfan. I would put MLS on the same level as regular season basketball and baseball. I wouldn't mind going to a game or two a year and watching a few minutes on the TV everynow and then. The only time I would watch an entire game on TV would be if the USA was deep into the World Cup.

exactly spot on. Ignorant people dissing soccer makes this thread funny, you can tell who those people are by their comments.

soccer is the most popular international sport and trying to mimic how girly it is funny. haters gonna hate.

McDonald's is popular worldwide as well. Doesn't mean it's good.

Sorry, I'm not a soccer hater, I'm a hater of this form of logic. That somehow, because it's popular, it must be good.

people like ****** stuff, that's that logic.

If McDonald's sucks, then it wouldn't be popular. It's your opinion that soccer and probably McDonald's suck, that's your right. Why is soccer and McDonald's popular? Because a majority like it.

Why isn't basketball the most popular? I mean you only need a ball and a basket for a hoop and that's it.

Popular stuff sucks, I dunno, that sounds like hipster logic.

I don't really blame the people who came into this thread making fun of soccer. The thread title was asking for it, basically insinuating that every other sport was childish. If you wanted a serious discussion if soccer should be more popular that was a bad choice.

that's the name of the article. So it's an accurate thread title. Was he suppose to name it "What other sports crowds could do to help their stadium"?

that would go well.

How about "soccer is the best and everyone who thinks otherwise is no friend to me!"
That would also go well.
