Why are we recruiting so many defensive backs?

According to my count they have 6 dbs so far in the next class. It seems like 4 would be a normal class size. Reasons for the large class could include players leaving or the new coaches may be trying to improve the talent level at the position, but does anyone have any input as to why we are recruiting so many dbs?

Switching defense to the 4-2-5

Upgrading our talent over Tribune and a few others I assume.

Defense that will be run. Evaluation of current DB's. My guess Campbell wants to "eventually" be able to run some man and he didn't think the current roster could. Big 12 is pass happy so you better have a bunch. Also, two seasons ago, they had some crazy things happen [sickness and injury] and the db depth was depleted. Probably kept Toledo from making a top 25 run that year.

I think we're short on numbers back there to begin with. The Jucos will help even out the classes.

It's not like they are all the same year. Some have five years to play four, some have three to play three, three to play two. Evening out classes, getting players for the system, improving depth. Big12 is pass happy, you need DB's.

Notice the type of DB's we are getting. These DB's for the most part have good size. If we are going to have 5 DB's on the field, they have to be more like safeties than corners or teams will just run over us. Probably recruiting a different type of DB than we have in the past so we need to load up early on.

Because Campbell watched the recording of the Texas tech and OU games and noticed the other teams wide recievers didnt have a d back within 20 yards on most passes.

Weakest position group on the field last season..how many 20+ yard completions did we give up? Glad Cambell recognized it..

This is the main reason. We graduated 4 of our top 8 db's and 2 more (Trbune and Wiltz) graduate this year. In the past few years, we have lost several DBS that we recruited that would be on scholarship right now - Charles Rogers, TJ Mutcherson and Damian Lawry from our 2012 class, and Kamari Syrie and DA Williams from 2013, and Devron Moore from 2014. Other than Peavy and Cotton-Moya, Mike Johnson was the only other player with limited experience after next years class so the way they are recruiting was necessary even if everyone stays. Of the 85 scholarships, this would put 16 as DBs which is a good # as they are also a big part of special teams packages as well.
