Maybe my circle of Cyclone friend fans are in the minority here, but basically we just don’t understand the whole “Becoming better versions of ourselves.” And “Becoming better young men.” Thing Coach Campbell continues to talk about. Especially after saying a Big 12 title wasn’t a goal this season(no one believes it wasn’t). Don’t get me wrong everyone I know including myself love Coach Campbell, he’s changed Iowa State football for the better and wouldn’t want anyone else. But the Coach talk and “Better version of ourselves.” Thing seems tacky and fake. Let’s go win some games!

I get it during the season. You don't want to say that our season was a failure when there's games left. But even later, I don't expect any coach to say that a team didn't reach their goals. Kinda a crappy way to take about a season that players gave their all for.

While his response was some sort of Hallmark special writing there, I see where he just can't say what the fans feel

I understand that. But his fallback is always the same though. I guess it’s just a coach talk thing.

As a parent when my kids were 17-22 years old, I was not good at getting them to focus on getting better at something and to work to improve personal attributes that will make them successful the rest of their lives.

From the outside looking in I admire what Matt Campbell does in his quest to make better human beings out of the people under his charge.

While my kids somehow turned out great, I am not going to even think that I know better than CMC how to do his job. Particularly with the results. By the way, he has won more games in a shorter period of time than any other coach at Iowa State, so he is winning games, just not enough for the OP I guess.

What do you want him to say? That the team has under performed and we are really struggling to beat teams that we should be beating on the road this year?

If he starts doing that, then he is throwing the kids under the bus or his coaches. I am sure that Campbell and every person on the team feels that they have under achieved, he does not have to rub it in at this time, but its also something that they can use to motivate them in the weight room this winter and getting ready for spring practice.

CMC has clearly been great for ISU FB, but I stopped listening to him quite awhile ago - basically, all coach-speak. But, it seems to work with recruits & players, which is what matters.

As far as the growth of CMC as a coach, I'd just point out that you can't spell "Best Together Team" or whatever without an "S" and a "T"... so, let's actually give a crap about Special Teams. Lots of improvement to be gained on offensive and in-game strategy too. Looking forward to how he hopefully grows in these areas. He's done great at ISU and hope he stays a long time... and continues to grow.

I don't see his coach-speak going away, but he seems like a great person & leader for the players. Plus, he doesn't mix in the rah-rah garbage that PJ Fleck does up here in MN... CMC at least seems authentic...

Perhaps Campbell is correct with what he's saying and those of you complaining about it are wrong?

From how I interpret it, he's talking about the small things that make you great. The processes that lead to winning a title. Did we maximize ourselves in those. You focus on the details. I'm gonna get called out for this, but the goal shouldn't be the win a title. The goal should be to give your best in all situations. When you do that, the side effect will be winning championships. That's why he constantly talks about attention to detail. When you focus on the big picture, you lose focus on the process it takes to get there.

Tell me you haven't paid attention to Campbell's message the whole time he's been here without telling me you haven't paid attention to Campbell's message the whole time he's been here

This is a big part of who Campbell is. Its probably also a big part of why he's stayed here.

IMO Campbell is still trying to build something bigger than a single class winning some hardware.

It's important to set expectations for the younger guys in the program and to make sure the older players who came back to "do something special" know they can still do just that by continuing to grind even though what they all wanted most is no longer achievable.

This is where the "winning in the dark" meets the road.

I basically could care less about what comes out of his mouth as long as the results are there. This season has been a major flop... besides OSU... thus far given the players coming back and coaching staff here long term. I'm ready for a fresh start next year.

But yet you'd care a lot if "I'm leaving ISU to take XX job" comes out of his mouth.

I’ve been tired of coach talk for a long time. Not just CMC, but all over sports.

If CMC is only concerned with creating good young men…. just bring in a bunch of spiritual advisers everyday and forget about the whole football part entirely.

If a Big 12 title isn’t the goal of my head coach…. then what are we playing for??
