A couple of observations...
1) This team can play good defense. They've done it in stretches. They just seem to be lacking the mindset that they need to play good defense for a whole game, start to finish, against quality competition. Hoiberg has been constantly talking about the necessity to keep up the defensive intensity for the entire game since last off-season, but somehow it hasn't translated to game time. This is a tough one, but the coaches have to figure it out if the the team (now and in future seasons) is to achieve the goals that Hoiberg has set out. This is not a problem unique to this year's team.
2) Hoiberg seems to be of the mindset to let the team figure things out, as opposed to frequent intervention. That works fine for some individuals/groups. However, for others, more instruction/correction is needed to keep them on the right path. This is another tough issue, and occurs in any personnel management situation. It's not easy to become "hands-on" for a manager who is by nature good at solving problems on his own and "hands-off". This team seems to be the type (perhaps as opposed to teams of the past years) that needs more intervention. It's late February...if the switch hasn't clicked on by now, the coaches are probably going to have to intervene and flip it as necessary.
