When to buy A/C unit

We are running a 25 year old A/C unit right now. At some point we would like to replace it, and think that this summer might be the time. There seem to be some HVAC experts on here, so it would be a good place to start.

I believe that I saw somewhere that there is a major change coming for home A/C units regarding their efficiency. Which leads me the the question of whether it is best to buy now, or wait until next summer?

If I do buy this summer, when is the best time to do so?

I'm no expert, but I would guess December...

Unless you have no common sense, you will replace your unit at a time when you need neither cooling nor heating for your house. Most intelligent people would schedule that type of work during the spring or fall so that their HVAC system would be working properly during times of extreme weather.

Chuckles, exactly how long do you think it takes to replace an A/C unit?

Are you talking window unit, or central? I can't imagine a window unit takes any more than an afternoon or so, and our new furnace/a/c was installed and running in two days.

I would also agree with the premise that getting new central air installed in July probably isn't the best way to go.

OP only mentioned the Central air unit. Half a day tops,

Replacing a air conditioning unit is something that I don't give any thought to since it is quite comfortable in the summers without air conditioning (I live in NW Colorado and my house is at the 7,000 foot elevation level).

You're fortunate(however your UV levels are much higher than what we deal with in the lowlands).

I hiked up in Colorado a few summers ago and was amazed at the natural a/c.

The only trouble with replacing a central air unit in July is that they seem to die when the temp is hovering around 102 in the shade. You call the local HVAC dealers and they tell you that they are swamped but will try to work you in the first of next week.
