Update on the Tesla buying experience.

I really like the app that handles everything from payment, to your order, proof of insurance, etc. I received my VIN today and pickup is scheduled for two weeks. We ordered it on 5/21. I was kind of happy for the delay because it means that it has the latest cameras.

I've found over the years that people tend to underestimate the costs of everything. I kept hearing that the electrical work would cost between $600-$1000. I knew going into this that is was going to be a lot more expensive. $2000 is the cheapest estimate I've received and $3,600 was the most expensive. This is the cost to run a line from my basement panel to my garage, where I'll have a new subpanel, and then to a Tesla charger. The subpanel will allow me to add an additional EV in the future.

Insurance is very expensive. My Kia Telluride is about $550/year. The same coverage on the Model Y, which is about the same value, is going to run $1,500/year.

I just paid my ModelY insurance, it was $475 for 6 months from state farm. My Subaru before was $350, but it was worth $20k less.

Looks like I need to check out some other companies.

Off topic question. I've had my credit frozen for a number of years. Do you think that impacts me when a new vehicle gets added to my current insurance?

I ordered a Jeep Wrangler 4xe in February and got it 2 weeks ago. So far, love it. Really debated and wanted a full EV instead of a plug-in hybrid but after renting several Tesla's through Hertz while traveling for work (range anxiety is very real), very happy I went this route. So far I've driven 130 miles and 125 of those miles has been on battery.

I think these are the true bridge vehicles between ICE and EV.

Make sure you save the receipts to get the EV charging tax credit.

You mean the $7,500 one? Yes, I'll have that in place. Unfortunately, midamerican is no longer giving a rebate for charger installs.
No, the 30% federal tax credit for EV charging hardware and installation.

Good question, I’m not sure how the scoring models work with that.

I wanted a Tesla until Elon turned in to a giant douche. So am looking at a Mustang Mach-E

Why on earth Ford decided to call their EV SUV a Mustang is beyond me. It's just does not resemble a Mustang in any way that I can discern.

Want to make a sporty EV with great 0-60 time and call it a Mustang? Great idea! Just make it look like one, you boneheads!

Last year I was considering a Mustang EV but the price going down on the model Y as well as the $7,500 goes a long way. The mustang I would have bought would cost at least $10k more. If the pricing was opposite, I would have probably bought the mustang.

What do you mean? It's clearly a Mustang. It has a horse on it.

JFC insurance rates are high in my area. I'd kill for that. I'm 3x or 4x that for best I can find.

My plates are maybe $100 a year more with plug in hybrid than comparable ICE vehicle and I do worry about that difference increasing more and more to make up for gas tax. I probably use 80% less gas just with my limited PHEV range.

Tesla was smart to start their whole thing with the exotic sports care and work down to other models. Dispelled the ridiculous myth that EVs are weak or nerdy.

EV mustang or EV corvette should be a symbolic high end thing and then make the real volume sales with other models.

When do we start adding taxes to ice vehicles for the environmental cleanup of gas stations, who nobody seems to want to pay for?

Or just make the stations collect enough money to cover their liability at least.

I would file that under the cost of doing business IMO. Do other industries get taxpayer assistance for remediation and cleanup?

In 2022, only about 21% of US electricity was generated from renewable sources. Add on top of that the environmental impact of EV batteries (mining for production; hazards of disposal) it’s kind of hard to believe people have bought into the idea that they’re truly being more environmentally conscious by choosing an EV. If you like them for some other feature that’s cool, but you’re fooling yourself if you think you’re helping the planet long term.

This is a really silly way to justify continuing to decimate the planet. Incremental progress is the ONLY way we are going to make progress as there is not a single, silver bullet to fix all of the damage we have done and continue to do.

There is no debate that the full lifecycle of an EV is significantly better (lower emissions) than gasoline based cars.

I'm getting super close to pulling the trigger on a Model 3. That tax credit is super enticing and my average daily driving fits easily into the range. Getting close to handing off my current Escape Hybrid to the kid anyway so I'd have the distance vehicle.

They are refreshing model 3 soon. I might wait until that but they may raise the price for the refresh.

I got a Mach E GT last year and a Model Y after the price dropped earlier this year. I find the Mach E to be the far superior car but you’re right about the price. The only reason I got the Model Y was because it’s so much cheaper now.
