When the dust settled that wild night in 1987, Lafester Rhodes had 54 points. Then there was a dust up when an Assistant Coach for Iowa approached Johnny only to have Orr charge him. It took others to deter the Iowa State Coach. What was the story? What sparked Orr's ire after Tom Davis shook his hand and the lesser Iowa coach came to do the same?

Did anyone read the article below it? No uniforms so they used baby blue t's with the numbers chalked on. Also subbed based on shoe size because they only had 5 pairs of shoes??? Crazy what sports used to be like.

My favorite pare of the article is when they gave the clarification that "Iowa is in the Big Ten Confrence and Iowa State is in the Big Eight" .....glad they clarified that because I am sure there were a lot of readers wondering why Johnny was spouting off about big 10 officials.

Uh, I don't know. I was one. Why are you asking 25 years later?

CyTV has many old/classic game re-plays. I watched this game considered to be one of the best ever at Hilton with Rhodes leaving a historic benchmarks that stand to this day. Viewing the game with a Hawk fan he recalled that Johnny went nuts for no reason. I knew that did not sound like Orr and read below what transpired.

Johnny was a feisty old cuss, that's what was behind it.

Sometime you guys should ask your elders the tale of John Culbertson. Offline, of course.

I saw him in the MWL commons and he was trying to get a girl to visit his room so he could show her some of his "artwork."

Good detective work!!! Now if you want to coment on Bielema!

I have always wondered if that was roid rage with Bielema. Were roids even a thing that long ago? Probably just typical kneejerk Hok.

As for Bruce Pearl, seems he was always breaking the rules.

One of our own CFers just donated an autographed photo of this 1987 team (as well as the 1988 and 1989 teams) to a charity auction I'm holding on Facebook from September 5 through 9. Just wanted to tell you guys, as they're rumored to have come from Johnny's basement (so he must not have been too upset!). If you are interested in snagging these, just like the auction and comment on them during the auction with your bid:

As someone who has encountered Gary Close on the court personally, I can tell you that he is one of the all-time grade-A ******.

I had just turned 10 and was on vacation in disneyworld in florida but my dad brother and I rigged a makeshift antenna on the roof of our villa and were able to pick up the game on the radio somehow (a lot of static ane came in and out but still remember jumping up and down in an upstairs bedroom with my uncles radio...preinternet days were something.
