What is with the Refs?

Morgantown is just a hard place to play for us. For many teams.

Take your lumps, pick up the pieces and stay engaged for the long haul.

No one (I don't think) expected us to win all our games. Let's see how we recover over the next 3-5 games.
A loss is sometimes necessary to keep your focus.
Agree totally. Refs were consistent on both sides so it shouldn’t matter and didn’t cost us the game. Hopefully we get refocused after a loss and make adjustments to go deep in the tournament. That’s what winners do…

Losers blame the refs

I have been an official, now I am 71 years old. I know refs make mistakes, but honest grading of them needs to be taken. When you screw up, you should be able to study the results and try to improve. BIG 12 should actively reach out with classes to hire more young officials, and pay them a good salary.

THAT HAPPENS. It happens from high school games all the way through D1. For HS in Iowa, they post every single varsity basketball game on Huddle so you can be reviewed and graded. Every college official has assessments regularly to make sure they are addressing any issues. Memos are constantly sent out to address issues that have been seen, and they are constantly trying to better officials.

You can take as many classes as you want, you need to prove it on the court by working your way up. There are tons of ways to do that, even in somewhere like central Iowa.

Also, D1 officials in the major conferences get paid between 2500 and 3000/game. I’m no financial advisor, but I think that’s pretty good for anyone in basically any profession.

I think this is part of the problem, or at least a separate one. That pay is all-inclusive, so that money goes to cover travel expenses (and taxes, right?). And it incentivizes working as many nights as you can from November to March.

Joe DeRosa is 67 years old. There’s no way he’s as good on the third consecutive day of work, having driven several hundred miles.

I've heard all the best refs are in the NBA, due to the pay (vets can make $500,000+ per season) and the benefits (travel, retirement, and insurance are covered by the league). Then you're dealing with the leftovers in NCAA, even the ones who get touted as being "good" by apologist fans because "They've worked [some number] Final Fours."

True, but that’s still a pretty good paycheck. But coaches I’m sure would prefer guys like Higgins and DeRosa (I’m pretty sure neither do games anymore) doing their 3rd game in 3 days over other more inexperienced guys. That’s pretty telling.

Top end guys are pulling $350-400k. Money isn't the issue.

There's a massive shortage. Its going to get way worse because youth parents and coaches suck and people that might have advanced and moved up levels are quitting before they ever get to that point.

There are no officials to pull.

The other side effect is that you have guys in their 50s and 60s doing games literally every night, all over the country.

There will be officials who do three times as many games per season as the players.

Yesterday was the 76th day of the season (including Xmas and NYD). Roger Ayers has already done 61 games in those 76 days.

For the most part, it's commercial air travel.

Example:
Night 1: Game in Ames
Day 2: first a.m. flight out of DSM
Night 2: Game
Day 3: first flight out
Night 3: Game
Rinse, repeat.

Also when you see salaries for the NBA stripes, consider that's for about six months of work, not 12. They get paid extra in the post-season.

No disagreement but if you asked any Big 12 coach 'would you rather have Kipp Kissinger on his 12th consecutive night or a fresh Tyler Kumpf (good young official that's become a Valley regular and gets the occasional Big 12 game)?'. They're taking Kissinger 100 times out of 100.

The system is broken in a lot of ways.

Six months of work is a pretty short sighted view of an NBA official.
