What is with the Refs?

I have heard of travelling on out-of-bounds plays, but never heard of freedom to move in a three foot area, other than the three foot deep area that is supposed to be on the sidelines of all courts (for which Kansas somehow gets a waiver as theirs is only 27 inches).

A couple misconceptions I hit on earlier in the thread that I’ll just point out on with your post, and I’ll post the rule here so you can see the wording in the official NCAA rulebook for 2024-2025.

Maybe I am misunderstanding in your post, and if so I apologize, but there is no traveling when you are inbounding. You have 3 ft wide area from the “designated spot” (where the official hands you the ball) to move however you want. Depth is unlimited. You could go in the stands if you wanted. I have found at KU the officials are really bad at allowing space for the person throwing the ball in on the sidelines.

Below is the actual rule. Read it, or don’t. But I always feel like it’s better to be informed when complaining about calls. Obviously you weren’t complaining here, that’s more of a general observation.

I am not complaining on this being called or not called. These are human beings it happens.

I just want to know, why there is very little consistency. Consistency between games or even in game. Watch the TT game, I see calls that are against ISU, but not TT for doing the same things. It is somewhat frustrating as a fan when things are so unbalanced.

It has happened in other games to the favor of ISU.

The only thing I ask, is please be consistent. Again, human beings that will miss things. Just please... be consistent with the calls.

New rule should be

If you are dribbling the basketball and being guarded close and you throw your head back, it’s a foul on you for throwing your head back.

They let WVU complete muck the game up. We also couldn't hit an open 3

You don’t think the hands/grabs on the perimeter have affected that???

Maybe some, but it didn’t seem to affect WV. The refs didn’t call much for either team. A lot of the ISU looks were clean. You can’t shoot 6 percent from 3 and expect to win.

I do wish the BIG 12 had someone to grade officials after each game. At the end of the year, post the results. Bottom ones move on from. Missed layups at the end sealed the loss. Too much dribbling and awful 3 point shooting didn’t help

I'm usually not a bash the refs guy but they were bad and we also couldn't shoot (both are true). BUT for how physical that game was and for how we like to attack the paint we only shot 7 free throws!! That has to be a season low

Replace them with AI/computer vision. It would at least be somewhat consistent.

The NBA ref went to prison for gambling on games. I'm sure he was the only one though.

Conferences do not control officials in CBB. That's only football

This felt like a game where they let egregious calls go and then called ticky tack ********. Good example was when Gilbert hammered his way into the paint and should have been an offensive foul but they didn't call it and then they call an and one the next possession on Jefferson when he barely contacted the offensive player. That **** drives me crazy. Not calling the double dribble/traveling late was horrible too but... Iowa State also played like ass today and deserved to lose. It is what it is.

I only got to watch the last 10ish minutes, but there were two bad calls against ISU where Jefferson and Chatfield (can't remember the order) were straight up and got called in the paint. Those calls both happened when the game was still single digits.

Refs didn't cost us this game though. 1-17 from 3 did.

From the WVU board:
What does WVU guards have to do to get a foul call? Bleed?

I just think this expansion has caused officiating in all sports to be trash. A lot of unqualified officials got promotions out of necessity

This gets repeated often but its not entirely true.

They don't directly employ them but they definitely have oversight of them. Which is why you have a coordinator of officials employed by the league.

Exactly this.
