I have heard of travelling on out-of-bounds plays, but never heard of freedom to move in a three foot area, other than the three foot deep area that is supposed to be on the sidelines of all courts (for which Kansas somehow gets a waiver as theirs is only 27 inches).
A couple misconceptions I hit on earlier in the thread that I’ll just point out on with your post, and I’ll post the rule here so you can see the wording in the official NCAA rulebook for 2024-2025.
Maybe I am misunderstanding in your post, and if so I apologize, but there is no traveling when you are inbounding. You have 3 ft wide area from the “designated spot” (where the official hands you the ball) to move however you want. Depth is unlimited. You could go in the stands if you wanted. I have found at KU the officials are really bad at allowing space for the person throwing the ball in on the sidelines.
Below is the actual rule. Read it, or don’t. But I always feel like it’s better to be informed when complaining about calls. Obviously you weren’t complaining here, that’s more of a general observation.
