What an awful week

Got a quick question for you, what has Pollard done that is so awful.

McCarney was fired because the fans wanted it and Chizik was hired because the fans wanted him. Morgan was fired because the fans didn't like him and we would have likely suffered more NCAA penalties if we hadn't, and though McDermott wasn't the most glamorous hire, we all thought he would do better than he has. Let's be honest, MBB and football are not much worse now over what they were in McCarney/Morgan's last year.

Under his watch, wrestling has greatly improved, as well as softball, volleyball, and T&F. He has also doubled the budget, done a much better job at getting games on tv, improved fan interaction, and has committed over 40 million to improving facilities. Something that desperately needed to happen.

So is the problem with Pollard, that he listens to the fans too much?

Last, I wouldn't call him a weasel. It's not like he is just trying to improve the resume and move on like Chizik. If that was his goal, he would be gone by now, we know he has had better offers and turned them down.

I'm not a Pollard apologist, but it irritates me when a fan starts in like this, when they caused the problems to begin with. I hate fans who's answer to everything is fire them, when we have our own proof, that is not always the best way.

Now that is just flat WRONG. For one the budget has not even come close to doubling unless ISU has a $60 million budget. Second the year before Pollard came to ISU the men's basketball team was in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournamnet and the football team won a bowl game and were on the way to their 5th bowl game in 6 years. How can you say football and basketball are not much worse than when Pollard took over? Come on.

Always enjoy your womens b-ball posts. To respond:

2. I'd like to see us more athletic as well. Don't know what the potential is to get Texas or Okla. type athletes to Ames, Iowa. Must say I don't like to see Weiben called out at pressers by Coach so much - she is what she is. If she's not good enough, play someone else. Not her fault. There were lots of whispers among prep coaches four years ago that she was not Big 12 material. We offered her anyway. She tries.

I don't care for the callouts either; and he layed into her good a couple times at the game Sunday. All the coaches and WBB media that know basketball say BF is a top-tier coach and the best XOs coach in WBB. We have practice facilities coming, and top-ten attendance in WBB, and play in a top-three conference. That should be enough to draw some athletes. Prins is coming, but I would like to see some slashers too. Sometimes you need a player who can just make a play.

The point is that they are not professional athletes. They are not just here for our entertainment, they are here for an education. We should never attack players who are doing well at school. If there is a problem with the way they play, discuss it, but don't make comments to the effect that they should focus more on basketball and less on their education. For most of them, they will be done with basketball after college, then what?

Well, I tell you what, at the B12 level, I would say it is about entertainment, it is about making money.

I guess we could just join the Valley, or Division II, and worry about academics and not winning games? We don't pay GMcD the bucks to make sure the kids pass classes--we pay tutors minimum wage for that.

That said, I don't think we should be attacking players. We should be attacking coaches that put players in positions they shouldn't be.

Outside of the win over Colorado, ISU has been awful this week. The women lost twice- both against top 15 teams but one they should have won. The men got blown away on the road against a team that, at the time, only had one more win than ISU.

The Gymnastics team lost to Iowa to make losing the Cy-hawk series that much more humiliating, and the wrestling team, who is was ranked second in the nation just lost to Missouri.

There is allot of talk about Barnes going to Duke, we lost Fountain to the one we shall not mention, we still don't have a defensive coordinator, valentines day was on Saturday, and something bad might be happening with Brackins.:jimlad:

The only good things is that the men finally won a game (against a team we should beat), and we hired a WR coach (who so far is the least glamorest of all the hires).

Let's hope for a better week ahead- personally, I couldn't get much more down on ISU than I am right now.
hey, its just another week as a cyclone fan, this is where u look ahead and buck up, look at is as the glass is half full, not half empty:jimlad:

From what I can find, ISU had a 26 million dollar budget in 2004 and with the department taking over Hilton it will likely get close to 45 million this year. It may not quite be doubled, but it still is very impressive.

I said that football and basketball are not much worse than they were the last year of McCarney and Morgan.

To blame the decline in football and basketball on JP is ignorant. The decline started happening before JP did anything and JP tried to get out in front of it, with the fans support. JP hired the coaches that many of the fans wanted, and so far they haven't done their job.

Your right, it is about entertainment, but that doesn't make players professionals. We should never criticize a player for being a good student- their education is more important than winning some games and if anyone thinks differently they should be banned from this site.

Coaches should coach, but hold their players responsible for their grades.

Here are the actual budget numbers from the Board of Regents. You might not be happy with the facts.

See page 6 for ISU athletic budget and future projections:

http://www2.state.ia.us/Regents/Meetings/DocketMemos/07Memos/feb07/0207_ITEM06f.pdf

Fiscal year 2007 budget was $33.5 million
Projection for fiscal year 2008: $35.8 million
2009: $37.4 million
2010: $39.1 million
2011: $40.0 million

This is straight from the Board of Regents. I don't see any "doubling of the budget".

Thanks Monty. And Pollard is responsible for the decline in both men's basketball and football. Look at the facts (wins/losses/post season appearances). FACT: The year Pollard came to ISU the program was coming off a bowl victory on the way to another bowl game and was just in the Final 4 of the NIT and a 2nd round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Where are we now?
