We wrestle Midland first at 5:30. Midland is ranked 9th in NAIA. This is their first dual of the season so I couldn't put together a probable lineup for them. Midland has ranked wrestlers in six weight classes.
125- Aspen Kmiec is ranked 4th in NAIA
133- Jacob Luning-Hoshino is ranked 16th in NAIA
157- Tyler McMicheal is ranked 10th in NAIA
165- Sterling Terry is ranked 6th in NAIA
174- Connor Hovery is ranked 12th in NAIA
HWT - Lonnie Brown is ranked 3rd in NAIA

Not knowing a whole lot about Midland I'd expect them to have a shot at 133, tossup at 125, and probably will get a win at Heavyweight. No reason for most of the other matches to even be close. I'd like to see a meet score along the lines of 40-6.

After Midland we face West Virginia at 7:30 to open up the conference season. Here are my projected lineups:

It is a little early in the season to do proper weight by weight breakdowns because there are still so many questions. But here are a few thoughts on each match.

125: Whether it is Larson or Hall I'd like to see them earn a convincing win over a decent but not spectacular true freshman. A win here wouldn't show much but a loss would really have me worried about 125 this season.

133: 133 is going to be tough in the Big XII this season. If Bauer can beat Pennesi, or at least make it a close match, that's a good sign that he might be able to be an NCAA qualifier this season. Morrison (Oklahoma State), Brewer (Oklahoma), and Pennesi all should earn a****ids. 133 this season is looking like it is going to be similar to 149 last season, where we have a guy in better position than he probably deserves to be to get a shot at NCAAs. That said, Pennesi will be favored and based on last Friday I am not expecting Bauer to get a win.

141: Meeks went 3-0 against Johnston last season, 2 of those wins were in overtime. If Johnston is the guy WVU sends out then I'll call this a toss-up match and a chance for Shayden or Gabe to show me that they'll at least be servicable for us this season. If WVU sends out Morales, who qualified for the NCAAs in 2012 but redshirted last season, then WVU is the favorite.

149: I'm hoping that Goettl gets Morales at 149, as that would be a much better test for him than Tre Miller-Scott. If Morales is the guy then a win would mean Goettl's loss last Friday really was a fluke and Goettl has adjusted to the move up in weight. With Morales at 149 I could see all four Big XII wrestlers at this weight potentially earning a****ids to NCAAs. If Tre Miller-Scott is out there for WVU then I'd like to see Goettl get a a major.

157: If Logan or John are going to be NCAA qualifiers this season this is a match they should win.

165: Moreno wrestled Renzi three times last season and won them all by 2 or 3 points even though Renzi is not very good. I'd like to see him open up and get a major here.

174: Weatherman beat Scheffel twice last season. I'd like to see him bounce back from last Friday with a convincing win.

184: Mancuso took last season off after going 18-9 for WVU in 2012. I'm going to call this match a toss up just because Weatherspoon is wrestling up a weight (he will be wrestling 174 at the Cyclone Open tomorrow) and Mancuso is probably one of the better wrestlers in the WVU lineup. No idea what to expect out of this match.

197: Trindade was a highly ranked recruit but is a true freshman. I'd like to see Kyven with a major or pin here.

HWT: There will be a Heavyweight match.

Meet score prediction: Iowa State 30-9 West Virginia

I hope they replace Tom Kroeschell as the play by play guy tonight or soon. The guy is great as a SID and did a good job running the blogs but no one should be putting him anywhere near a microphone.

Midland playing around with the lineup a bit in the opening dual, sending out Heinzer (#12 ranked at 125 in NAIA) at 125 and bumping up Aspen Kmiec (#4 ranked at 125 in NAIA) at 133. They win at 125 but lose by major at 133. I wonder if they'll do the same against us or give us Kmiec at 125 and Jacob Luning-Hoshino at 133.

Have to think they'll give us their normal lineup. Against WVU they probably feel they have a shot at a dual win so they are more likely to play around to try for more points.

I think Pennesi is getting a bit of the SR bump. He is good but not great and Bauer could upset.

Will the mean-looking freshman heavyweight from Detroit be wrestling? I can't wait to see him start tearing guys up. It would be a nice way to start the weekend with a win by a recruit by Michigan.

I have some bad news for you...

I won't spoil the surprise though. I'll let you find out in a few hours.

Ugh. I don't want to know. I saw him at the FanFest. That guy looked like a beast. And KJ seemed pretty high on him.

It's possible that he was just really tight because it was his first match in a Cyclone uniform. And as a freshman he has a lot of time to get better. But last Friday didn't look good. At all.

He won two state titles in Michigan, so he has to have something there. Hopefully, it is just KJ helping him make some changes as he transitions to being a beast at the college level.

He's had some health issues and hasn't really wrestled at all for the last two years. So who knows. Maybe he just needs some time to get in to the groove.

In the meantime. Maybe Levi Peters is available?

Anybody want to take odds on when Gibbons takes a swing at Kroeschell? I've got 8PM tonight.

Larson up 5-2 after 2 periods. He gave up a reversal about a minute in but got an escape and then a late takedown on the edge.
