Others have said that you can get a medical redshirt if you play in less than 30% of a team's games, is this correct? As it stands right now Wesley is obviously not healthy and honestly he should probably be held out just to get healthy at this point.

If he can play in less than 30% of the games, could they just hold him out until he's healthy and practiced some and then return him later in the year for some conference games? There will be at least 32 games this season. He can play in 9 games total and still stay under 30%.

Could they hold him out until, let's say the TT game on 2/23 and have him play the final 7? I just don't know how this works exactly.

If he cannot play, I do like the future for the next 3 years with him on the team. Assuming nobody goes pro early, that would be a lineup of:

Garrett/Buckley
Staiger/Eik
Wesley/?
Brackins/CJ/Mann
Vette/Hamilton

For the next few years. I think that could be a very competitive lineup and could really set the table for the 2010 class if we can get Barnes, Dykstra, and some other elephants that have been thrown around.

I really think we need an Eric Coleman\Jared Homan type player also. Someone that you just can't keep off the boards. That is something we are missing big time. Brackins will be stellar over time, but he can't do it all.

I think the intent of the medical redshirt rule is to allow a player another year if he has a season ending injury early in a given season. What you are suggesting is more like putting a player on the disabled list, and then bringing him back for the playoffs. Not gonna work!

I think another part of the medical redshirt rule is that all the games that a player appears in must be in the first half of the season. That would limit him to playing in 9 or less games out of the first 15. Any game played in the last half of the season eliminates the possibility of a medical redshirt.

My understanding of the rule is that you can't play after applying for the medical redshirt and you can't try to have a "defered sentence" type of thing where you play in the later games. It would be great to have him in our biggest games but I think that would be taking a huge risk that would probably result in the application for medical redshirt being declined.

Myles Brand would be on us like a wounded bee in a bar room stinging match.

Here is a link to the hardship definition on the NCAA web site ( I'm not sure this link will work ). The text follows.

14.2.4 Hardship Waiver.

A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference or the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet for reasons of "hardship." Hardship is defined as an incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised: 8/8/02)

(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any two-year or four-year collegiate institutions or occurs after the first day of classes in the student-athlete's senior year in high school; (Revised: 1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 11/01/01, 8/8/02)

(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (measured by the number of scheduled contests or dates of competition not exceeding the maximum limitations in each sport as set forth in Bylaw 17 as set prior to the first scheduled contest or date of competition of the designated official NCAA championship playing season in the applicable sport or the number of completed contests or dates of competition) and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 4/3/02)

(c) The injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the institution's scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only scheduled or completed competition (including exempted events but excluding scrimmages and exhibition contests identified as such in the legislation) against outside participants during the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport.

In addition, I believe the injury has to be certified by a physician, not a school trainer, as being severe enough to prevent the athlete's playing the rest of the season.

I hope Wesley's injury is not that severe and that he can be back to 100% by the start of the Big 12 season. We're going to need him.

I think he means that, a medical redshirt could never happen if you took him off of IR and played him the last few games of the year. He definately is illegible right now for one however.

Where is Roger this week? Who is he making signs for now days now that he headed to the Cotton Bowl with Mizzou?

Why would we redshirt Wesley if we think he is going pro in a couple of years? I would not think redshirt would be the way to go.

To clarify the redshirt question. It would not be a medical redshirt for Wesley just a normal redshirt as he has not redshirted yet.(too many redshirts in this post)

How is that the case? I think to get a normal redshirt a person must see virtually no action on the court. Whereas a medical redshirt allows you to play a small part of the season.
