I've only seen about 5 mins of mbb so far this year - I know it sounds like many are a bit bummed out by the Drake game.
My question for those that know there stuff - does it look like we will be able to get the parts of this team working well enough to find the middle of the Big12 or are we to far away from that?

I know asking this after a L is not the best time for cheery responses. Was just curious what some where thinking.

Can we stop?? Geez, a year and 2 games in and everyone knows everything to know about the next several years of the Hoiberg era.

Naz Long is coming in.
We are all over good PGs in the 2013 class.
Lucious is eligible next season. He's a true PG.
We are recruiting some top 2014 PGs too.

What we have now, is not what we will have in the future.

Stop what? I'm happy for Iowa State and am glad we have Hoiberg and that he is getting talent. I also understand that there is only one ball and it is important to have a variety of skill sets. I'm excited about long... some say he's a 1 some say more of a combo.

I actually think Railey will see some good minutes at C this year.. but Booker will be there quite a bit as well as another PF with White. Allen might need to take over at PG. Scottie is struggling quite a bit, so switching back to SG might help him. Plus McGee and Babb look like they could step up there anyways.

Allen
McGee
Babb
White
Railey

That would be my starting five. Christopherson, Booker, and Ejim would still see close to the same amount of minutes as the starters though outside White and Allen. McGee and Scottie could and would be reversed if he starts playing like last year though back at SG.

But to me the biggest thing last night, it looked like it was a whole bunch of hey I'm just going to be the star and make a play here.. and no team effort for the most part.

An average big can help everyone else out. He doesn't have to be great, just effective. If he understands his role, he can elevate the other players' game. It is a team concept. I'm not saying Railey is going to be a game changer, but he can certainly help this team on the defensive end of the floor. To discount the effect a 6'10" player can have on the paint shows your ignorance on the sport. We're not asking for Wilt here.

A big in the paint allows everyone else to be more aggressive whether that means pressuring the ball or getting into passing lanes. Having a big that can contest a shot in the paint is an equalizer that this team needs. Too many layups and players going right down the middle of the lane last night.

Oh I do agree with you, we need help at center totally. Not sure if it is Railey is all Im saying.

After being at all the games this year.. it seems that all we need to do is...

1.Start playing SOME defense as a team (all positions included)
2. Get someone who can run an offense.
3. Make free throws.
4. Make layups.
5. Not take stupid shots.

Those all seem like fundamental things that have our fanbase worried, and I think worried with reason.

If we were a center away Fred Hoiberg would have recruited a center at some point in the history of him coaching here, but he hasn't. It is not in his plan to have a true center. /thread

Yep, we don't need a center. I'm sure we'll take one if he is skilled enough, but there just aren't that many out there.

Railey didn't look all that great over the summer I'm not sold at all. But I like Booker up front with Royce... that's great the problem is I don't think the coaching staff is going to trust Railey or Gibson with any spot minutes meaning Booker is going to have to come off the bench.

I really don't want to see Railey back next year. I could see him transfering for more minutes. Tavon can't be happy sitting behind a walk on either. Plus with Lucious next year he might not want to wait until maybe he can get minutes his junior year.

The real story IMO is that Booker has to come off the bench because we didnt replace Godfrey.

Wasn't there a very talented C that Michigan State lost last year? I think if Fred wanted him, Allen and Lucius could have helped lure him in.

Is he redshirting? Maybe he, like DG wanted too.. prefers to RS to make himself better for the future.

I don't think it is an issue of talent and getting better with Tavon. The issue we have is a log jam of scoring guards. And based on who we are signing the log jam continues.

I'm very happy we got talent now, but one has to wonder where the Stevie Johnsons, Shawn Bankheads, Klay Edwards, etc are on this team.

Chris Allen can fill in at the point this year and I'd be over the moon if we got close to .500 in the Big 12. But next year when we have two big stars with Royce and Clyburn... having role players that want to do the dirty work will be key and it worries me a little that we don't have any.
