The fact that after Ryan’s 5 shots (0-5), anyone not named Audi or Addy took a combined 4 shots (2-4). For the game. That can’t be a coincidence so either players need to shoot more or they know they can’t/shouldn’t shoot. I have a feeling it’s the latter.
Wow that's a wild stat. 97 minutes played today between seven players, who took four combined field goal attempts.

This is the million dollar question. Is it confidence or is it coaching?
Just look at the demeanor of the guy on the bench. Scowling, arms crossed looking miserable all game. Quick hook for anyone not named Addi or Audi. And we wonder why role players are passing up shots…

Watch literally any other team play. Everyone touches the ball. Everyone moves. But on our team 3 of the 5 girls on the floor are there to be ball movers. 3 of 5 girls playing just not to **** up. That’s coaching.

Maybe Im cynical but I’m of the belief that Bill is here as long as he wants to be. From Pollards perspective, WBB loses money no matter what he does. Bill has an annually competitive program that draws much more fan interest than most. We’re not competing for NCs or even sweet 16s. But we’re competitive enough to be in the top half of the conference and keep fans interested.

This isn’t Danny Mac where we were a middling program on the downward trend. Pollard had to make a move there because FB drives all the $.

I just don’t think Pollard will make any changes unless fan support dropped off a cliff. And his hands are tied because we can’t spend money to get a great coach. Just have to hope you hit a grand slam on existing staff or a lower tier coach.

So, I think this is how it’s gonna be until Bill decides to hang it up.

Bill's current contract runs through 2027.

There is ~zero chance he is bought out/fired. I think he would have to choose to step away for there to be a coaching change before then. He'll be 70 years old in '27, I assume this is the last extension, but who knows.

That’s absolutely true, but I hope Bill can see that whatever he is doing isn’t working.

Unfortunately, he probably doesn’t or doesn’t think it’s his fault. He probably thinks about how if he leaves his assistant coaches will probably all be out of a job.

Relatedly, while I know women's BB coaches don't make NFL money, they still make serious bank (Bill's current pay is $866k, that is a princely sum in Ames, IA). I really don't get these guys that do it until they're deep into old age. It seems like such a stressful, life-dominating, always-on-the-clock job. I'd make my ~unlimited money and get out at 55 or so and do whatever I want for the rest of my life. Maybe they just love it that much, or maybe it is the "got to hang on for my assistants" thing.

Like Pete Carroll for example probably hasn't needed to make any money for about 20 years and he just started a new head coaching job! I don't get it.

Jackson was 1-1 and Joens was 1-2 so shouldn’t be a confidence thing when you are making shots.
After AJ took that hip check, I don't feel like she was feeling well. I can't remember her playing a ton after that. She did have HVL but was getting beat, then ER had her shot. HVL was playing so well. Bill likes to play the percentages and that is my guess why they were sagging on Bigby but then she was hot, and they changed defense.
This was the first game that I was screaming we needed to run different plays for other players. 2 guards were just taking up space. But Addy and Audi had the hot hands tonight. They did run a great play for Aili to get a top of arch three but TCU fouled and we didn't try again. We were getting downhill but then stopped and looked for someone else to make the play. TCU cleared the lane for HVL and we didn't do the same when we could have.

I’m

yep, it’s a top 15 job in the country (maybe higher) but opportunity is passing us by. Had a real chance 15 years ago to be a top 7-8 close to elite (in my view), program. Bill has gotten kind of a pass the last few years, because it’s “women’s basketball”. Now that doesn’t hold water.

Thinking this is a top 15 position is fantastical. I mean it is a good job with good fan support and maybe close to top 25 but nowhere near the elite level you seem to think it is. Factor in the weakened league and it's not going to on pair with middle level Big Ten and SEC schools, maybe on par with Kansas and KSU. Additionally we have had the same coach for a million years so we have zero relevant history on how easy or hard it will be for a coach to sustain anything here. "Can I recruit to here?" is going to trump "Look at all the fans in the stands!" by 10X. No great P5 coach will jump over here, it will have to be a mid-major or roll of the dice on a P5 assistant.

In any event, the job isn't opening up until at least 2027. Don't think the coach is going to give up the family business until he runs out the clock on Crooks and Brown. If he retired now his son would likely need to have to find a news job somewhere. I just think there is zero chance of that happening. I fear that 2027-28 might be a really weak roster for the next coach considering how the recruiting is likely to continue to trend. That's the trouble with a almost retired coach running out the clock with a great senior class. It's why Orr got forced out. Bad for Johnny at the time but probably saved the program from a dive.

Good points. I disagree slightly on Audi having the hot hand. She was 12/26 from the field with 24 or 25 in the lane - that’s not great. Audi has such as opportunity to play inside out because she gets doubled a lot. But she had 2 assists and 26 shots, that’s not ideal.

We should play to our strengths but it’s like we don’t have any ability to change or pivot game plans which is why we are now 0-7 in Quad 1 games.

ok maybe they were kicking it out but nobody wants to shoot enough to score.
We just do not have good 3 point shooters, only a few games are we hitting 8 or more from behind the arc. We shoot a lot of shots out there, unlike today, we just don't make a lot.
