not to disagree with you but they never get the ball to shoot. everything is to go inside. watched joens turn down shots to pass it inside . they have to shoot and make some to draw the double team off the inside
We were kicking it plenty, the problem with this team is that they cannot make enough of them game to game to cause teams to play us even and not double down on our posts.

It is hard to attribute an opponent's scoring to one player on defense, but I would love to see some numbers on that for Audi. I'm sure it's still a net positive but as great as she is on offense she's an absolute liability on defense, just being real here.

Those are not exactly plentiful in the portal. And a guard of that caliber isn't going to want to come to a tight reigned system like Bill runs.
I've been well-behaved, not talking about CBF while the season was on-going. We were preseason #8 and just got boat-raced in HIlton by a team which got NOTHING from two of it's three best players (Prince & Conner). LOL at the guy who "isn't impressed by HVL" - hopefully he's a believer now. This ISU team is massively underachieving and that's on the head coach, who has NO ANSWERS at crunch time, game after game. The supporting cast is underachieving because they're scared to death of making a mistake, which sends everybody except for Crooks & Brown scrambling to the end of the bench - I'm tired of people throwing players under the bus when they're doing what they're told - namely to feed the post! The star is out there chucking up threes when the game is still in the balance with no ramifications - RIDICULOUS - the inmates are running the asylum!

Thirty years is enough - Fennelly needs to retire so we can find a young creative coach (like Mark Campbell) while we still have two years of Crooks and Brown remaining - hopefully we'll be able to retain them and the new coach can use them to win a conference title.

Just one point of order: Crooks airballed a 3 early in a recent game (KSU?) and was immediately pulled by Fennelly.

Not disagreeing with your thesis. Just adding that I don’t think Bill loves her chucking 3s, either.

ok maybe they were kicking it out but nobody wants to shoot enough to score.

The second half of this game was entirely on the coaching staff. We had ER guarding Van Lith for WAY too long. No one else contributed on offense because we were actively running plays to NOT have them contribute. ISO ball or ball in to Audi while all the guards sat their with nothing to do. No off ball guard screens, no one even moving for a pass out... it was embarassing.. We just got lucky Addi is such a freak on offense today.

Audi - while having points, was NOT good though. 29 points on 26 shots (!!!) is not good.

I disagree with this. We may be kicking it out, but it's not to a player who is in a position to make a shot. It's usually kicked out while still being contested. It's not a kick out after the defense rotates - it's a kick out of the post because they don't have position. It's NOT a kick out for a three attempt.

wow. i could have worded that more concisely, but am too frustrated to even try right now ;)

Audi was decent with that top-of-the-arc three last year, 31%, although I guess she still only made five so maybe it was just kind of fluky. This year she's yet to hit one. Last year it looked like a set play most of the time.

I estimate the chance of Bill getting fired at 0% but I hope he seriously considers moving on. He's maybe the best coach ISU has ever had in any sport but I think it's time to move on and give someone else a chance to be successful with the program. It should be an attractive job, winning history and great fan support.

yep, it’s a top 15 job in the country (maybe higher) but opportunity is passing us by. Had a real chance 15 years ago to be a top 7-8 close to elite (in my view), program. Bill has gotten kind of a pass the last few years, because it’s “women’s basketball”. Now that doesn’t hold water.

Agreed. I'm sure we don't stand a chance at getting Jennie back up here, but she has to be the first call and make her a large offer.

I can't really tell what we're doing on offense this year. It's a lot of one player dribbling while the other four stand around. With the transfers all (on paper) being good shooters, my expectation was we'd run a ~2010 Orlando Magic Dwight Howard-type offense, opponents could either single-cover an unstoppable post player or choose which of these four 40% three-point shooters they wanted to double off of. Obviously that hasn't materialized.

i don't give him the "pass" anymore because the recuriting has been so much better the last 8 or so years.

he's just stuck in his ways too much. This year's team should have been playing man defense all year - now we are trying to make it work half way through the year when obviously not working on it much before.

And our offensive system just SUCKS.. .it's just lucky Addi and Audi can overcome a complete lack of offensive innovation (or heck, lack of any sort of "modern" offensive system that can utilize player's skills).

It really does pain me to say this as I LOVE coach Fennelly and will be very sad when he does leave. I just am thinking it's time for him to hang it up and look back at his amazing career as he obviously doesn't have the ambition to keep up anymore in terms of the state of the game of basketball.

I love how much he cares for his players, the fans, and the university - it's just time.

you and me are on the same page there with your first sentence... i don't know what we are doing either other than "pass to Audi and hope stuff happens, because we have no backup plan"

That’s a player problem. They either pass up shots or aren’t doing a thing to contribute except take up floor space.

The tepid postseason results we've had in the past ~10 years while having some all-time great players in the program is really disappointing. Four years of Carlton, five years of Ashley Joens, and two years of Crooks have resulted in advancing past the second round all of once. In 2023 even before Soares went down, something just seemed off with that team. Steph was such a unique player I think we really needed to gear the offense around her, but that wasn't really happening.

they run to a spot and then stay there like they are told to. unless they get the ball and pass it inside they are not a factor and I feel that is on the staff

The fact that after Ryan’s 5 shots (0-5), anyone not named Audi or Addy took a combined 4 shots (2-4). For the game. That can’t be a coincidence so either players need to shoot more or they know they can’t/shouldn’t shoot. I have a feeling it’s the latter.
