Part of the problem with the run game was DE could always crash bc we had no threat to run at QB. Zeb is more mobile than KK but nothing great.

Another part is a lot of these guys were just young still.

On flip side pass protection was very good.

This will be most talented Roster in history of isu fball IMO next year

If everyone returns the next year will be better. That said, Lima, Montgomery and Butler could all leave and change that.

Lima and Butler could leave, but don't think they will. Montgomery is a true sophomore so he won't be leaving unless he transfers.

I don't really like running the QB out of an RPO scheme. Essentially what an RPO wants to do is give you number based on an alignment and I just think a defense would have to make mistakes within their own defense to make a QB run in a traditional RPO real effective. There are exceptions like whatever that counter play OU ran last night was but I don't think that was RPO. I think that was a predetermined run where they gave a pass look but there was so much going on on the film room channel that I can't separate things out in my head. Anyway, if you want to run the QB, run RO, veer, and midline options.
Agreed. But,I can't imagine CMC running the QB with lack of depth and experience currently at this position.

Mitchell was an interesting recruit to me. I look at this staff as a staff that wants a thrower and if they can run, great, if they can't, fine. Obviously a mobile guy is better than not but Mitchell is a better runner than thrower right now and they took him over some guys. He wasn't down the list very far. So I expect that they want to run the QB a little That doesn't mean next year though.

RPOs aren't about the QB running.
Or apparently about the RB running, either.

Our offense did little in terms of helping the OL with our run game. Hopefully a few personnel changes will add a dimension or two that will help with the execution.

My questions are more on Defensive side..... At DT why Domingez over Josh Bailey, or Tucker Robertson?
I also don't see a mention of McMillan at LBer, he has been playing a ton of special teams this year similar to Spears last year, might make the jump....
One other noticeable lack would be DLC, he made the position change this year but never saw the field.... (hate to bring this up because I always get killed....) Can we assume any would be upperclassman that are not listed may be elsewhere next year??? (Kory Kondako, Denver Johnson, Josh Coleman(though he is not listed on the roster anymore), add to this Vic Holmes, and it looks like Cole Anderson may be graduating and retiring from football)?

I'm really worried about the QB position. No disrespect to Zeb, but I'm not sure he's a B12 caliber QB yet?

In all fairness, I'm always bear-ish on ISU QB's but I'm usually right. ;)

There is a good chance we will add a grad transfer QB, but if we don't I think the staff has proven that they can get the guys on the roster ready to play. No way did any of us think we had any real depth at QB this year, until Kempt and Zeb proved us wrong. CMC and Manning seem to really do a great job of understanding the strengths of the individual QBs and play to those strengths. Zeb showed he can be effective and he will be a year older and wiser. Moore was injured this year, but he has a cannon for an arm and I'm sure he is more comfortable now than he was in the fall. It is easy to forget that Mitchell is more college ready than most. He didn't play HS football as most of us know it, he played at an elite level few of our recruits experience. This and his early admission will make him more ready than a typical freshman.

Anybody heard much about Cordarrius Bailey?? I figured he would be someone that could make an impact next year, but haven't seen him mentioned.

I was very excited when he signed with ISU. He's listed at 6'3" and 220 lbs right now, so he still needs to add a bit of weight and get stronger probably, but I think he'll be a good one in a couple years for sure.

Agree. Hopefully he takes after these guys in the senior class that transformed themselves into very good Big 12 players. Imo retention (development) is what killed Rhoads more than anything. Hopefully this staff continues to prove they have a good eye for guys that want to work.

Another OL, I have heard CMC talk highly of is Colin Newell , true freshman from Ames High. He has been dressing and traveling. Just named scout team POY and will be a legitimate 2nd team center by next fall.

Butler and Lima seem like they should be seniors in '18. Glad they're only juniors (Montgomery fits the description, too, obviously).

My way-out forecast is for Campbell to find a niche for Warren to get more time — best-guess as kick/punt-returner. Not as radical as moving Lanning to LB, but it'd be cool to tap into his ability even if it isn't in backfield.
I think Warren filling in the void left by Ryen would be a great fit.

I am not sure I see this role, I don't think he can catch the ball well enough... Also not enough speed for the end around.... D. Jones seems like the permeant one there.

I don't know about the speed on the edge, but MW does not have great hands, unless he has made a lot of improvement in this area in the last couple years.

Any chance Denver Johnson plays any snaps next year? I know he has had injuries, but I hoping he would develop into another big physical Iowa State wide receiver. Seems like he was in some highlights during the spring, but didn't play this fall.

What position groups are there to be worried about? It's less of a position group thing and more of a position issue.

MLB - Tymar Sutton / O'Rien Vance / Jake Hummel - One soph, 2 frosh

Star - Jatairas Grant / O.J. Tucker - One soph, one frosh

Safety shouldn't be on this list. I know people will ask about it, but I feel Wilkerson was solid but replaceable. And while KCM was good in run support, he struggled in the passing game, as noted by Jay Jordan. We have capable bodies there.

LG/RT - I think the offensive line will be much different by the start of the season vs what we think now. But I'm very excited about Bolton/Hudson. Need to see something from Meeker to really put the offensive line in a good place.
