Anyone have one they really like (and that's decently affordable)? I've been taking my dog to our current one since I've had her, but their prices seem a bit excessive.

Dr. Gigler at Ankeny Animal and Avian Clinic. She's very good.

Isn't CW's wife a vet?

Yep, Creature Comforts. I take my pets there. Nice place, although I'm not going to pretend that I know how it compares price wise to other vets in the area.

I'll second the recommendation on Oaks. Smaller location but the staff is fantastic. Very affordable too. I've owned two English Bulldogs and that breed has its share of health issues but Oaks has a great deal of experience with the breed which is nice.

Anyone have one they really like (and that's decently affordable)? I've been taking my dog to Northwest Vet Hospital in Urbandale since I've had her, but their prices seem a bit excessive.

For what it's worth...I just Had Northwest do X-Rays and thyroid testing on our dog. Checked around for prices before using them, including non-metro, and Northwest was competitive. They were able to do the X-Ray without anesthesia which saved a bunch from the other folks (plus being better for the dog). Overall, I was very pleased with Northwest.

I go to University West Clinic on University in Clive. I really like it there and they don't charge you for everything they do. Stay away from Family Pet Center on Grand in WDM. I went there first because they are right next to a pet refugee but they have no affiliation and they charge $60 every time I went in to tell me my dog's teeth were good.

We take our dog to Eberle Animal Hospital in Clive (near 7 Flags). People are really nice. Never had any major issues, mostly just shots and routine stuff.

We see Dr knoebel at macrae park and recommend him very much. We also go to Avondale for water therapy and chiro/acupuncture. We haven't seen Avondale vets for regular vet stuff but they do seem very nice.

Dr. Thilges at Prairie View Animal Hospital in Grimes is great. We switched to her last year and the prices seem to very reasonable compared to our old vet.

I was always happy with Southview Animal Clinic, but it is not close to Urbandale (SE Des Moines). Dr Phil Gustavson is an ISU grad, as is his wife. Did good service for me through two lab retrievers and 25 years.

Kind of relevant, but the folks down at Iowa Veterinary Specialties on 63rd and Creston are some of the best pet people you can meet. Yes, it can be pricey, but since they are a 24-hour emergency clinic you kind of have to expect that. I've had to take both of my bulldogs there for different emergencies, the first was surgery on a heart tumor and the second was for foreign objects stuck in the small intestine.

For the second surgery, it was extremely complicated due to the nature of the obstruction, requiring them to transport my dog up to Vet Med in Ames to complete the procedure. IVS as some sort of outreach program with ISU. Long story short, doctors up at Vet Met successfully completed the procedure and my dog had a full, healthy recovery. Basically Iowa State save my dog's life.

Sounds like several good options. I would go with Chris' wife, that way he can go on more vacations. You know good things happen for ISU when Chris is on vacation.

Second Southview. Been taking our dogs and cats there with great service for the past 15 years or so.

Dr Gustafson, btw.

When we lived in WDM, went to Dr. Foss at Ashworth Road Animal Hospital. They were always great with the pets and pretty busy, but now that we live in the boonies the prices are much lower.
