Get your bag or whatever but this is why NIL with no-restrictions is terrible. This is tampering 100% and now UNLV's season is gonna be drastically different. Welcome to the wild wild west.
I can’t fault a guy for going for more money, but quitting on your team mid-season isn’t a great look.

On some level you have to blame the NCAA rules for that.

Because the NCAA limits the number of games one can play and still redshirt to maintain their eligibility, he has to leave midseason if he wants to preserve that and get paid in the future. Otherwise he could just finish out the year and move on.

Its almost inevitable the NCAA will move to a 5 year eligibility rule and get rid of redshirts entirely.

And honestly, when they're getting paid what they are, I can't exactly fault him for leaving the team for the money either. Most people would leave their current coworkers if it meant a significantly larger paycheck, and in the NIL era that's pretty much what they are.

Especially if one considers their time at the NCAA level an audition for the next level. If one's satisfied with their time at the NCAA level, then 100% get your bag while you can.

I won't be surprised if this happens more and more just like sitting out bowl games, etc.

Is basketball next?

I think the only way this would get corrected (if it's even possible?) is if the 'Bamas of the world start to see the same thing.

Hard to tell how to feel about this without the whole story from all sides. This certainly has the appearance of quitting, but if my employer (oh, am I not allowed to use that word when it comes to student-athletes?) didn't follow through on major compensations we had agreed to and had in writing, I'd be walking without notice, too.

Assuming the compensation this athlete is referring to not getting was in writing. If he just made handshake deals and they weren't fulfilled, that's on him.

Heck, Bama has had the opposite happen with Proctor.

Are you basing this off the one tweet from Jason Kelly? Based on the player's tweet, I took it as he was promised $xx in NIL at UNLV, he's not getting that so he's leaving. Might not even have other offers yet, but probably knows his value.

Would you keep working if your employer decided they were going to pay you half of your agreed upon salary?

Not knowing the whole story, I'd want to know if there were any commitments the player didn't fulfill. If XYZ player at Iowa State had agreements to make appearances with the We Will Collective and then didn't make those appearances, and then up and left mid-season saying financial agreements weren't kept, that's on the player and not the school or collective.

A lot more to learn about this particular situation.

My gawd, if the UNLV QB is asking for $300k to stick around imagine the going rate for a run of the mill power 4 QB... so incredibly stupid. Thankfully Campbell seems to recruit guys with high character who (so far) havent been chasing the quick cash.

We need contracts and protections for both schools and players.
