A few thoughts:

I know we had issues with the broadcast yesterday.

SDSU on Friday was about as good as it gets with a new arena with plenty of bandwidth and room on press row without fans being on top of you. I was by myself and don't think I've ever talked that much in my life. I wished that Nate would have been there because he's the best and we would have put on a great show that night with how that dual played out. Joe was taking a much-needed break, and if the 3 of us had been in Brookings, it would have been ridiculous when Herrera got that ride-out. I am so appreciative of Joe and Nate letting me be a 3rd wheel on these broadcasts. Andy Stubblefield was awesome stepping in and giving me a chance to breathe on Friday. Andy is the Oracle of ISU wrestling for a reason.

UNI was tough.

A record crowd, lots of media wanting to fight for their spot and fans literally 2' from us constantly screaming and causing problems with our equipment. Our engineers are in Joplin, Missouri and there's only so much they could do about the situation yesterday.

I know it wasn't a good broadcast, but it got to the point where Nate and I had to decide to either just log off, or keep talking and pray for a miracle from the technology gods.

As far as my broadcasting skills, you'll never confuse me for an ESPN announcer, but I'm "Clone to the Bone" when it comes to ISU wrestling and I'm going to be a homer on the call. I care too much about these kids to be objective. Coach Dresser has some really neat people stepping out on the mat. I just act like I'm sitting next to someone at their first wrestling meet and try talking to them about what is going on out there. But I'm not a professional and never claim to be.

Nate and I have a unique opportunity to be in the room for the referee's instructions to the team and Coach Dresser's pre-match talk to the team. It gives us some perspective on what to look for and things to talk about. It was very frustrating when the point of emphasis that was made in the locker room was control of the mat area with coaches running all over and that flew out the window right from the beginning.

On Friday, when Herrera stacks his guy for more than a 2-count and Titus is looking at who knows what, I'm going to call him out. Yesterday, when Schwab was allowed to do the complete opposite of what was just said to the team in the locker room, I'm going to call that referee out too.

To the people asking for a coaching change, c'mon get real. It was a perfect storm yesterday for UNI. Coach Dresser made the moves he had to make to give us a shot to steal one. It didn't happen, but I like our guys and I like our guys in Tulsa.

Brighter days are ahead, keep the faith.

Broadcasting in a hostile crowd that is so close is difficult . You might try unidirectional microphones to reduce crowd interference . Try testing them in that environment prior to live broadcast. In addition , when you have multiple announcers , some mics cancel out 2 voices depending on mixer type and that is why your audience only heard garble when Nate gets excited and yells during play by play. Love his enthusiasm but you have to pause when he interjects with the mic types you guys were using. The mixer settings at the site can help out too. Go Cyclones!

MJ and Sima that non escape and locked hands was very back call.
MJ let him go and facing Sima and not touching when he in front and sima does shot and they get locked up and call locked hands.

I don’t know why refs are so hesitant to call an escape in this situation. When their facing each other and the guy cutting is on the feet, that is an escape. Make the bottom guy wrestle, this seems like a no brainer.
If the riding time was headed towards 1 minute, that guy/coach would be screaming for the escape

Holy crap, that was against Schwab?!?! I clearly remember Hinson getting DQ'd for stalling in that match, but had no recollection of it being Schwab.

Yup. December 1997. There's video as well. I can't watch it.

Just watched this. From what people have written, I expected PJ’s performance to look worse. I’m not as knowledgeable as many here about wrestling, but the number of points for stalling seemed like too many.

It's frustrating. Obviously Paniro was gassed and backing up, but he had the only two takedowns in the match. Realbuto was pushing forward, but he didn't take many committed shots. Definitely not enough to warrant 4 stall calls. It's pretty rare for a guy to be up 2-0 in takedowns, but 0-4 in stall calls. I think there's exactly one gym in the world where Realbuto wins that match.

Having said that, Paniro has to get better at stalling without it looking like stalling.

Who is the guy sitting behind Dresser with the wrestlers that looked to be coaching and yelling during the dual as well?

No stall calls in the 1st and a warning in the 2nd and Paniro gets a takedown in the 3rd and still gets 3 stall calls in the 3rd. Not sure I ever seen that

Paniro got 3 stall calls in the last 30 seconds. The last one was to scramble and escape a takedown.

The other 2 were probably warranted. He needs to at least attempt that he is trying to circle back in.

Ya...today is what it is. Schwab is the same Schwab he's always been. UNI has a dang good team this year. We are essentially wrestling 2nd and 3rd string at four weights. It was always going to be an uphill battle to win. Tip your cap to them and just plan on blanking them next year in Ames.

Also, as i looked around the sold out McLeod center with all that energy, UNI should be ashamed of themselves for trying to hide this meet in the West Gym for all those years until they were forced out.
It was a great atmosphere for sure and the 10 of us had a blast.
Honestly I think there is a chance we finish higher than UNI at Nationals.
