He honestly believes there is talent. He thinks Campbell can right the ship. Says the season is long and we need to have patience.
I think most people can see there is talent but it seems like Campbell's trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. You can't continue running the ball into a stacked box and think you're going to gain an advantage.

Are the athletes that much better on defense or is it the coaching on defense that much better? Seems to me the offensive line is to heavy should be no heavier than 300 lbs. lack quickness and where is the violence Coach Clanton talks about? Simmons seemed better as a freshman! Just don’t understand why they don’t block until the whistle blows! They stop and turn around to see what happen. Don’t get it!

It's a variety of things that boils down to poor play calling and then poor execution which diminishes confidence and turns into a **** show. IMO, our staff is handcuffing the line no different than their handcuffing Rocco. If they're stacking the box and wanting us to throw it, throw it. Make the defense spread out and get them on their heels, then, when the defense thinks you're going to throw it, run it down their throat. Right now our line is playing not to mess up but our play calling is so predictable. If the defense essentially knows what the play is going to be, it's so hard for anyone on the offense to succeed.

I was a DB in high school but also played WR. When we'd practice, I obviously knew our offensive playbook and like ISU's offense, we were incredibly predictable. It was so damn easy playing against our offense in practice because I essentially knew every play. Now, obviously ISU's opposing team isn't going to have as much direct knowledge but if you're predictable and the DC has their guys keyed up, it's so hard to move the ball. It's like playing a game of chess when the other guy has a pretty good indication of what you're going to do. It's also what makes our defense so good because Heacock is a mastermind of film and tendencies and teaches his guys the same.

I’ve said this in another thread. The violence happens 3 yards in the backfield when the defense hits the runningback.

I’m just not seeing all this talent everyone keeps talking about on this team.

Repeating but ISU's routes look robotic and without any flow or natural progression of finding space.

Some of these players know how bad these route trees and concepts are.
Happily

1) RPO. Put the defense in conflict
2) Involve the QB with a true / read pull because that makes the defense account for him which means there is one less defender who has to be blocked initially.

3) Widden out formations. Instead of having 7-8 offensive players which brings 7-8 or defenders, make them defend 53 yards. It makes natural running lanes appear

4) Incorporate more power / outside zone to compliment inside zone.

5) Consider going tempo. Yes, it might speed up three and outs, however, it has the benefit of forcing the defense to align quick, and if you are able to convert a 3rd down, they might get worn down and then at that point, its easier pushing a 300+ man backwards.

You try push a 300 pound object that has no wheels and is sit in the ground, it ain't easy. You push a 300 pound wheelbarrow up hill with functioning wheels, it still sucks a**, but its easier than pushing it without wheels. Getting those big boys moving increases the chance of this.

6) Change up the snap count. Especially on early downs when defenders are geared up to stop the run. If we get a couple of those , they stop charging as hard across the line and again, makes them slightly easier to block.

7) Vary the play calling. Instead of being so run heavy on early downs, mix in some more passes. Make a DC have to think. Break your own tendencies. Every single team has them. But the best offenses are aware of this and have tendency breakers. Just like the best defenses do.

8) Better utilize motions and jet sweeps. The more you get a defense going side to side the less a defense in straight up field. The more defenses are going side ways in theory, the easier it is to run block

9) By incorporating more power, pin and pull concepts you naturally create more interior double teams. Well, if you have a weak offensive line that can't win one on one matchups, creating double teams should, again, in theory, create more favorable matchups for your offensive line.

10) Use of tunnel screens and X screens to receivers. Again, if you can't drive them out of the way and they want to hard charge up field, ok, let them.

11) Draws. Establish a passing game, then hit them with a draw play. Again, can't establish a running game, okay, fine. Get a defensive linemen rushing up field, and try hitting them with draws instead of running head first into a brick wall over and over again

12) Set the edge and run a speed option play if you are going to continue using Tight ends right off the LOS.

13) Also, could incorporate a shovel pass to the TE coming back across the play underneath the OL if they are all zoning right, have him come back left and essentially it works as a counter and again, slows down the opposite defenders by making them slow to go in pursuit, which eases the pressure on the playside blockers because there is now a cut back lane for the RB if that defender has to respect the counter or something coming backside

14) Move the pocket. More roll outs, smashes / curl snag concepts and floods to one side of the field to give a young quarterback a half field read and a more clear run-pass option. Put the defenders in a position to be wrong in that snag-curl or high low option./

15)
Flare the running back out like on a bubble or flare the TE out, defense shifts out of the box, well, then I run inside zone or power because now they're shifting, not set and one less hat in the box. They don't shift, I throw the flare, and say ok, even if I only get 4 yards, its 2nd and 6 and sooner or later, you'll leave the box cause you'll get tired of 4 yard gains which opens the run game.

16) Go into the week and find the weakest matchup on the opposite team. So your offensive scheme will vary slightly week to week. If they're leverage and apex defenders are weak, its TE / H pop pass time and outside zone. If their DT's are weak, its inside zone and power time. If their corners suck or play the run aggressive, I'm going to double move or go vertical.

And that's just off the top of my head

A lot of details go in to much of that being successful

We’re bad at details for most of 7 seasons under CMC

Rocco, Brahmer, Higgins, and Norton are talented. Noel is talented but is so messed up between the ears. Then you have Sama who I think could be the most talented of the bunch but young RBs take time to mold.

That list is mostly underclassmen.

Well, so much for all the folks saying that Campbell wouldn't throw the team under the bus.

“I don’t feel like it’s a lack of creativity,” said Campbell, whose team has won one of its last nine games decided by seven points or fewer. “Really, it was a lack of execution and I think if you go back to the first game and the second game, there are some positives, and yet there are things that are a hair off. And, again, I’m not saying this to be deflective. I’m saying this to be honest. There are a lot of guys playing for the first time in some of those critical spots. I wish that wasn’t the case (but) I’ve got great belief in our young men. We’ve got great coaches. I think part of it is you’re not gonna panic.”
Yes. There's more blame on the players being young, and the players not executing vs. any inward blame on the coaches or him, in particular.

He says he's not deflecting but then deflects.

On the offensive side of the ball, it's almost completely the freshmen and sophomores. But overall, offensive talent is way, way down and it's got to be the worst in the conference.

CMC hasnt given anyone an opportunity to see it. He is handcuffing everyone. They have a top 5 defense, that will keep them in enough games that you have to score maybe 17-20 points to catch a W. The issue is the complete ignorance from CMC to make any changes. The opposing defenses literally only have to stack the box, and defend the first 3 yards basically in between the hashes. CW mentioned it on the last 3-4 podcasts, we arent even making teams defend the whole field. Something has to change, otherwise campbell is going to get more BS than just a drunk fan telling him hes on the hot seat. I cant remember the last time i heard resounding boos at Trice, but holy **** we are getting dangerously close

What are you comparing this talent to? Lazard, Butler, Monty, Breece, Kolar, X, BP…that’s ******* talent. None of the players you mentioned are even in the same stratosphere as those players even on Day 1.

A lot of those guys you just mentioned didn’t play much day 1. And you’re also comparing them to some of the best players in our history of our football program. There are levels to talent. And I’m not gonna sit here and be pissed that our freshman and redshirt freshman aren’t as good as current nfl starters were.

Pass first. Pass second. Involve the QB in the run game. Quick slants, bubble screens, HB screens, play action, misdirection, jet sweeps, draws, and occasional deep shots.
This under the assumption that the speed is there for these things from skill positions to blockers.
It's not an all or nothing principle. You are going fully in the other direction, implying that if a passing offense requires more speed, skill, good blocking, why try it. A combination of run, pass, screens, misdirection, RPO, tempo, any number of things already discussed, is what is needed, not just one or the other.

We need the other team guessing what we will do rather than knowing. Other teams have us figured out. They know our tendencies and play accordingly. We have done nothing consistently or significantly enough, to change that.

Jfc what scheme is that? I’m honestly curious about how you would put together a game plan with the garbage up front that we currently have?
No need to swear at me. No need to call many of our players garbage either. I don't like that, and it does not help matters.

I have made the point, as have many others previously, regarding what play calling and schematic changes could be made, and should be made. A couple of people have just now put a few in Reader's Digest version for you.

I don't feel like I have to relist them for you. Maybe if you ask nicer next time. Others are better at it than me anyway.

Do people not understand the difference between "panicked reaction" and "thoughtful change?" Do you really want the coaching staff to be panicking? How does panic usually work out for people? There's a difference between panic and urgency. I expect urgency, but I'd be disappointed if the coaches were panicked.

ETA: I'm also grown up enough to admit that in the heat of watching the game as a fan, I probably won't be able to identify most of the differences they would implement in a week's time. They could make major changes to how plays are blocked, packaged, etc and I'd wager almost no one here will be able to pick up on those changes in real time. Hell, NFL coaches collect and review film/photos during the game to see what's happening. But Joe Forum thinks he can watch 22 people simultaneously and understand everything that's happening.
